iPad Pro with M1. Power of M1. Give it to me now. Like now now. Only… if Apple sticks to pattern, it won’t be an M1. Not exactly. It’ll be A14X. And that’s caused… some confusion. Some consternation. But let me explain.

I don't think the a14x will have the exact same performance as the m1, but it will come close. Let me explain. You see the a12 and a12x were both clocked at 2.5ghz, and had the same amount of cache. However, the a14 bionic is clocked at 3 ghz and had 8mb of l2 cache for the performance cores, where as the m1 is clocked at 3.2 ghz and has 12 mb of l2 cache for the performance cores. So I speculate that the a14x will have the same clock speed and cache as the a14 bionic. Also, combined with the thermal and power constraints of the iPad, it won't be as powerful as the m1, but burst performance will certainly come close to the m1 MacBook air. I expect it to have significantly less sustained performance than the m1 and most likely only having the 7 core gpu, probably down clocked and TDP downed slight. Don't know about ram, but I could see apple doing something where it's 6gb on most models but maybe 8gb on the top storage model. Either way, this is going to be an insanely powerful tablet.

Probably won’t be as much memory in the A14X/Z as the M1. RAM isn’t part of the CPU die, it gets added into the package after the chips are produced. That will be one of the key differences between the M1 and A14X/Z. Might go to 8GB RAM, but might remain at 6GB.

The “problem “ with the iPad Pro is that it is way faster than what most of us need it to be at the moment and the only reason I am writing this comment on a 2018 12.9 model bought this year instead of the 2015 model I had been using as my main device until the purchase of my m1 MacBook Air was because I could get it at a very great discount and because it had considerable more storage than my gen 1 unit. A new 2021 model with all the things the rumors think it will come with would not be of interest to me even if I had not invested in the 2018 model recently as I would be more interested in adding a high quality display to my m1 than in an iPad that is even faster than the 2018 model when the 2015 model was fast enough for my use case. Love your videos though and are rooting for the small percentage of iPad users who could use a faster iPad Pro with a better screen. @AlejandroLZuvic
@AlejandroLZuvic 3 года назад
@@andrewblawson the problem with that is that every iPad app is expected to work with only a touchscreen (yes, some apps work better with a keyboard but you DO NOT NEED a keyboard or a mouse). macOS apps expect a keyboard and a mouse. You want every macOS app to work on iPadOS? Fine, you’ll need to force the iPad to have always a keyboard connected (making it a Mac) or you’ll need to force every Mac app to be touch designed (making the Mac an iPad with keyboard). There’s really no middle ground. Each app should be designed case per case targeting a system.
@andrewblawson
@andrewblawson 3 года назад
They've experimented with this already by having iPadOS apps run on M1 Macs. And you're right, the iPad apps function better on an iPad, but just having the option to run Mac apps on an iPad if you have a keyboard would be great.
@AlejandroLZuvic
@AlejandroLZuvic 3 года назад
@@andrewblawson I’m not against macOS apps ported to iPadOS, if it works for you, great. But some people want all macOS apps in the iPad and that’s just defeat the purpose of the simplicity of the iPad. macOS and iPadOS are two different beasts. Once you put macOS into the iPad it stops being simple and easy. Suddenly you get the same freedom from macOS but also the same complexity, the need to understand when installing an app from the App Store or from the internet, you get tangled in low level configurations and permissions that are different than in iPadOS, you get some unsigned apps that should also work independently from the App Store. There’s really a gazillion things that macOS does different than iPadOS.it’s really not so easy.

I suggest to Apple that after next Mac Pro mini desktop and Mini, to have slide out motherboard, so you can swap out a m1 and slide in a m1x or M2 etc. That way they can just sell an upgrade rather than a whole system. They would save on production cost and constant new design costs for case and system design for next 5 years. I’d rather pay for a swappable mobi that has cpu/GPU plus storage and ram for $300-$700 for top tier specs. Also, they could sell upgraded power supply adapters.

All of the iPads are still primarily media consumption devices. Very few people who have an option between a computer with a dedicated keyboard or an iPad are ever going to choose an iPad for production. Part of it is the file system and how locked down adding for sending receiving documents to an iPad is. The expense of internal storage and the hassle of attempting to attach external storage to an iPad exacerbates this. I don’t think high and laptop and desktop chips are necessarily needed and iPads.

@@manart6506 Simple enough, not a real issue to add ports that is what they did to make the M1 Macs. Any one paying attention new these iPhone chips were going to over take lap top chips currently in production.

@@callumclark4021 no, it’s not. Just because the Control Center comes with big rounded icons doesn’t mean the whole OS is designed for touch. Text selection, window multitasking, the menu bar, the traffic light in app windows, Finder, etc etc, there are dozens upon dozens of simple tasks in macOS that need a ton of work to be used with touch in an easy way.

If Apple ever had any intention to place an M1 into an iPad, I think they would have simply put an 12Z into the Macbook instead. There are similarities, but each OS has a unique architecture, it should be a unique, dedicated product SoC.

I don’t know what all the confusion is all about. Apple CLEARLY stated that the line of chips for the Mac is exclusively FOR the Mac, and not for anything else. There might not be too much difference between the current generations of M chips, and A chips. But there are notable differences. They can’t market an iPad Pro chip with Mac chip branding. That would really confuse everyone, and would seem as though Apple was going back on its word.

Love your proposed names, BrainStorm and ShaderStorm. The iPad Pro SoC will be called an A14X/Z. M1 chips that fail testing on thunderbolt or emulation acceleration modules could be repurposed as A14X/Z chips. Whether or not they sell enough iPad Pros to justify creating a mask without those components is questionable. Probably not a significant difference in chips per wafer. So the cost savings might not outweigh just binning and disabling those extra modules.

It doesn’t matter 99% of the people that use these don’t use them to their maximum potential. Same with the iPhones and Apple isn’t innovating in ways that bring new experiences and ways to interface with tech to people like they used to but rather play the yearly numbers bump game like samsung has been doing for years.

Apple has to pay Intel a royalty for every Thunderbolt controller they sell. They would never, ever put a Thunderbolt-capable chip into a device that doesn't need it. Even if the A14X lacks only the TBolt controllers compared to the M1, it's still worth it for Apple, especially when you look at sales figures.

The M1 is the A14X, the A14X is gonna be the M1. Some of the coprocessors are gonna be different but the CPU and GPU are gonna be identical.

The iPad Pro will come with an M1 or M1x only if Apple releases XCode/FCX/LogicPro. I don’t see the need for so much power if you don’t have pro apps to work the device with.

As Rene explains. The A# SoC designs were scaled up a bit to become the M1. Apple Silicon is an entire family of SoC designs. It's all about the thermal and size constraints for each product. Apple is making bespoke Apple Silicon SoC designs for each product. Apple implied that the M1 was originally designed for the MacBook Air but when they added active cooling even they were so surprised at the results from the unified memory they also put it in an entry level Mac Mini and 13" MacBook Pro. The next level of Apple Silicon will no doubt add more CPU / GPU cores and more RAM. I seriously doubt they will even use discrete AMD GPU's as the unified RAM eliminates the need for an external GPU with it's own high speed RAM sitting out on a PCIe bus. That's like trucking your work down the highway to a factory and trucking the results back to the corporate headquarters. That's a lot of overhead. The size of the die on an iMac and the Mac Pro can be significantly larger than the M1. What's next beyond 2022 will be 3nm and kicking things up to a whole new level. Going from 5nm to 3nm saves even more power and increases transistor density further improving performance. Going from 7nm to 5nm produced about a 27% improvement overall. We will likely start seeing radical new product case designs as various limitation are no longer limitations for Mac's. When designing processors it takes at least 3-5 years of R&D, there's a whole lineup of designs coming. Apple's been busy on this for several years. Easier because they already had the basic design in the A# SoC. This is why Intel and AMD are so very screwed, it will take them that long but likely longer to catch up to where Apple is today with the M1 let alone where Apple will be at that time. This is going to prove to be just as highly disruptive as the iPhone was when it launched. This is the next new thing. Right now, heads are exploding across the entire PC market. They are all now in a mad scramble and if they are not, they are in very deep denial.

Yeah, the M1 in an iPad wouldn’t make sense as it’s a laptop/small desktop CPU. Also an iPad shouldn’t be as powerful as a MacBook.

Why not? The 13” IPad Pro is just a MacBook Air with a touch screen and Bluetooth keyboard. The MacBook can run iOS apps, so why not give the iPad Pro the ability to run MacOS apps? I’d be willing to pay a little more for the IPad version, so Apple could make more money per device if sales shifted from MacBook to IPad form factor.

The M1 also has a GPU that appears to macOS as a macOS MetalFamilyGPU for Metal, OpenCL OpenGL and perhaps some other legacy Frameworks, something that none of the A-series chips do. That may be why Apple hasn't named the cores on the GPU. There's a good chance that they're NOT identical cores to the A-series cores.
