Apple is getting ready to drop the next generation of iPad Pro. The most advanced iPad ever, no doubt! So… I decided to go back to where it all began and react to the very first iPad drop, the keynote from Steve Jobs over a decade ago, to dish a little behind the scenes and… well… to see how much of that original pitch still holds up today…
From why Steve Jobs wanted to make the iPad to begin with to how many chairs he went through on stage, this is it!

@@ReneRitchie I think the first keynote announcing switch to Intel would make a great video. You could even go back real far and maybe do the iPod keynote or discuss how Steve Jobs revamped the Apple computer lineup to be simpler back in the PowerPC days with the 4 quadrants. iBook/iMac and PowerBook/PowerMac. I think it's really cool to see the continuity of the philosophy of Steve Jobs and his influence Apple.

Not to me. It was basically launching a big version of the iPod Touch/iPhone with some improved features and technology. There's nothing wrong with that, but I still see it largely as that. The iPhone was far more revolutionary as a game changer with full-front display with multi-touch. I was more excited when the Apple Pencil was released for iPad than when the original iPad was released, as it became a proper different product that truly did something the other stuff didn't. Until then a computer could often never replace a paper and pen for a lot of stuff. The Apple Pencil changed that (at least for most of the world). I wish I had an iPad for work sometimes, but ONLY so I can easily sketch, draw and annotate things when I need a pencil and paper, literally not for anything else. My 2020 iPad 12.9" iPad pro is still not nearly as useful as my 10 year old MacBook, even though it's literally 4x as powerful, due to available software and other limitations, so gets not nearly as much use as either my iPhone or my Mac. Can I plug multiple monitors in? No (apart from just mirroring the display with the wrong aspect ratio). Can I run any decent DAW software. No, even the best is somehow hamstrung like not tempo maps or time signature changes. Games? Again, very limited. It's a very limited device compared to its processing power. Don't get me wrong, iPads are cool, and I do love mine for some things, but get equally frustrated sometimes by its limitations. That's how I lived without one for years, and now kinda wished I'd bought a low spec one and kept the money for a new Mac. Sure some tech got pushed by its invention, but if it wasn't invented then, these same technologies would have gradually come to the iPhone or Mac in the end IMO, and it never seemed truly groundbreaking like the iPhone launch. That really changed the game. You only need to walk anywhere in public and see everyone totally absorbed by their full-screen multitouch phones, which just didn't exist til the iPhone.

I was never interested in the iPad. My ex bought an iPad 2 when it came out to take notes at meetings. When that didn’t work the way he had hoped, it went into the back of his vehicle into a computer bag. I dug it out one day and just thought I’d turn it on to see what it was like. I was instantly hooked. I’ve owned one ever since.

The iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard has some of the best aspects of both iPhone and the Mac for mobile computing in one product. And exceeds them in others. Each is the best tool for the right job of course, but what the iPad Pro does is perfect for a lot us, and for a lot of things. Drawing and note taking especially.

I was one of the early adopters of first .. the iPhone .. I still remember people in malls coming up to me and asking if that was the new Apple phone .. everyone wanted to have a go.. I bought the first iPad, the day it launched. Even the postman who delivered it at 8am knew what it was and told me to enjoy the new gadget! And Apple Watch again, bought it on launch day itself .. when I paid at M&S using my Apple Watch.. the cashier told everyone besides her on how incredibly cool it was!! I’m watching this on my first gen iPad Pro. Except for the 2 terrible keyboards (the original and its replacement) that each died when they were just out of warranty, this thing has been my go to for ALL of my personal computing needs pretty much from the start. I had originally hoped I could use it for remote access to my Windows desktop at work but that never worked and wasn’t to be. I was given a laptop by my next job so that ended up being no big deal. I quickly relied on it for just about everything else, though. Movies. TV shows. Music. Email. Social media. Bills. Banking. Gaming. Travel Planning. Online shopping. As an American living/working overseas much of the year, I’d set it on my table while having breakfast and watch the U.S. news, until Direct TV Now destroyed that with geo blocking. That said, I’ve stayed in the Android universe smart-phone wise and I am wondering what I’m going to do when I need to replace this.
