Can't thank you enough for all the videos your sharing. Especially on the m119. I bought a 1990 Mercedes 500SL about 4 years ago with 126,000km and it ended up needing head gaskets replaced have always had a passion for cars as far back as I can remember I'm 32 now and have never pulled a motor or done any major engine work so was rather intimidated looking at the quad cam, 32 valve V8 but decided to start the process last week and now have the intake and heads off and going to begin disassembly of the cams and valves for inspection. I can definitely say I wouldn't have had the courage without watching your video's. So again I can't thank you enough for everything you share. I know I'll be referring to your video's quite a bit in the coming days and as parts arrive.
Mr. FNT -- this is a nicely done video and rare; not many videos out there that show the re-assembly of the valves, keepers, seals, springs, and lifters. Some years ago, we did a survey at the 500Eboard and found that the chicks really dig clean and shiny cylinder heads though. ;-)
Would you suggest changing the cam oil tubes with the metal aftermarket ones? I was told I have a small ticking and that would be the cause. Can I get your opinion on this please? :) Thank you my friend!
I apologize for missing your comment. For some reason I'm not getting alerts. The metal tubes are the earlier versions. I'm not sure what years exactly had them. For sure up to 1992. I would suggest using them. They won't ever crack or break like the plastic ones.
@@FriendlyMBTech no worries friend! I appreciate you =D I think when I do that I’ll also change the gaskets and Timing guides :) also have to figure out what pulley is making that squeal noise when I’m at high rpms. I’m honestly thinking the ac compression because it’s a bit wobbly. Still have quite a bit of work to do. But I love this car. It’s taught me so much and it’s honestly a great car :) Thank you again for all your help! Best of luck on the new project!
Hi! I'm renovating my M119 & I wonder when it's time to change valve guides? I would never do this myself if it weren't for your excellent videos! Thank you 🇸🇪
I'd recommend having a machine shop replace the valve guides. Depending on how many miles you have on the engine, I'd say it's one of those "while you're in there already" type things. Other than that, if you see excessive wear to the valve stem, you might also have wear to the valve guides. When installing the valves with the head upside-down and the stem coated in oil, the valve should go in slowly or with very light pressure. If it falls right in, then you might have worn guides.
Good Day, Hope all is well. I was wondering if you recall the Mercedes valve seal part number as I'm having a real hard time getting the Corteco seals or the Victor Reinz seals to seat into place. Ordered the Corteco ones after I had a problem with the Victor Reinz seals. The old ones seat down nice like they are in your video but the new ones I got just don't want to go on... Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
@@FriendlyMBTech Thank you, I wanted to cross reference part Number's. I have the early model 119.960 with CIS-e fuel injection from 89-92 and realized the seals are different for the earlier models. Having a hard time finding the original seals with part # 104 053 01 58. Just sent a parts request to the closet Benz dealership in Kingston Ontario. Fingers crossed as the seals are the only thing holding up reassembly.
