Carl Gutierrez provides a walk around of his restored M151A1 MUTT (Military Unit Tactical Truck) and discusses his ties to local history where he served at the Nike Ajax missile sites protecting Los Angeles during the Cold War. The exhibit was part of an event at the Western Museum of Flight honoring Vietnam Veterans. Produced by Jarel & Betty Wheaton for Peninsula Seniors www.pvseniors.org

Great video. Only suggestion would be to show the engine compartment.

Indeed, we called them 'jeep'. Great for rough roads. Ours always had a radio. That one is in better shape than any we had. Each mission they had to be camouflaged (painted). In Europe they were pre-positioned so we could be there and acting within a day. Most our equipment in Europe was pre-positioned because of the SOVIETS. They had little trailers which we did pull with things like camouflage netting because you put a few guys in that jeep and there is no place for your gear. We had to go to the motor-pool to inspect them and then the mechanics would do the repairs or they would be written off, dead-lined. Next came the Blazers (CHEVY) which we hated. They did not fit well with our missions and they did seem to be broken much more. The most positive thing about that jeep is that if it was stuck (hard to do) a couple of us could get them unstuck. The Blazers often required equipment to get unstuck. Those jeeps bring back fond memories. As cold as it was and as uncomfortable as they were we still liked them. There was nothing like jumping sand dunes in them like the old TV show "RAT PATROL". LOL, yes we had fun too...

This M151A1 in this Video was used during the Cold war and Vietnam war era. If this vehicle could tell it story of those Veterans who may have driven or taking a ride in it, during the late 60's and 70's, that alone would be a lesson in history. On May 18, I will drive it with 3 other veterans from WW2 , Korea and Vietnam to the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade so our local community can cheer and wave to "Thank them for their Service."

I called it a "Jeep"or 1/4 ton vehicle while I was in the service. In Fact we never called it a MUTT. The MB,GPW and M38's "Jeeps" all had straight 4WD front and rear axles. The M151's were all independent 4WD axles besides having a horizontal grill and being roomier inside.

We also called them "Jeeps" or "quarter tons". Never heard of a MUTT until I left the service. BTW, I'm restoring a 1970 M151A2 currently.

Your radio is a RT-524. It is set-up as a GRC-46.

Under all government designations there’s no such thing as an M-151MUTT that is something that has been dreamed up by a bunch of “Ignorant to the fact military personnel or civilians! “ The official designation of the M-151 is quarter ton truck military truck by the US Government! By the way I am M-15 1 A2 Owner!

THE U STANDS FOR UTILITY, (NOT UNIT) THE HORIZONTAL GRILLE WAS MADE THAT WAY TO DISTINGUISH FROM WILLYS.

Your correct and I stand to be corrected plus in regards to the horizontal grille, I believe it was a trademark issue due to" jeep's" vertical grill.

M151 a2 windshield? ( not split)
@carlgutierrez4354
@carlgutierrez4354 6 лет назад
Yes it is. When the motor pool had to replace a windshield it would often replace it with a M151A2 windshield because of the advantage of having electric windshield wipers.
