The new 2024 iPad Air 13" is a fantastic value for those who want a big iPad experience without having to shell out "big iPad money." However, at the moment the $799 price tag sort of indirectly competes with a member of the Apple family it has drawn a lot of hardware from - the 2022 iPad Pro 12.9" 6th gen. Though this iPad Pro model in question lacks some of the new shiny features, it still packs quite a punch and quite possibly provides more bang for your buck if you're someone who cares about the finer specs and whatnot. In this video, I share my basic review of the 13" Air and compare it to its older, Pro cousin in order to help you decide which is a better choice!

Bought the 13” pro and the 13” air. After testing editing 3 cam, multi cam 4k footage and exporting in Final Cut… I returned the pro. Screen is much better but, real-world performance, such a minor difference. For me, not worth that huge price gap. Very happy with the Air.
@DanielHarrisCodes
@DanielHarrisCodes Месяц назад
What was the price difference of the models you tried? The main thing holding me back from an Air will always be the refresh rate because I've used an iPad Pro (2018 and M2) for about 5 years now - Weirdly the 60hz on iPhone doesn't bother me one bit, but I notice it right away on iPads it just feels choppy. Probably just sticking with my M2 12.9 but I was tempted to swap to an Air 11" now that I've also got a Surface Pro 11 which finally ships with a decent ARM chip, so I feel like my iPad can be smaller next time.

@@DanielHarrisCodes For me, I need the 1TB model with Wifi and cellular. The difference between the two, cost wise, is around $600 US. After posting this original comment, I must admit… I am considering switching back to the Pro. I have 3 days left to decide before my return window closes. But I only consider this because I have not upgraded iPad since 2018 and I intend to keep this new one for another 5 years. I am wondering how much more future-proof the M4 is… vs the M2. Especially as it relates to new apps/features coming out, over the next few years. Re: that refresh rate… I can’t explain it, but I notice it less on the new iPad Air than previous models (and keep in mind, I am coming from a 2018 iPad Pro). I recommend giving it a try in your local store to see if you really notice it.

@@enok9343 but 60hz is still fine. And if you prefer 120hz that’s fine too. But your original comment wonders why the M2 Air is shipping out for $750 with 60hz refresh rate. You’re implying that this is questionable because YOU prefer 120hz. For most everyone else, they won’t care about that. The other thing you did is pull out one single aspect of the M2 Air and use that to try to justify spending $750. The price has nothing to do with it having a 60hz refresh rate. The price is conclusive with everything that you get for this device, not just the refresh rate. And you further complicate this by comparing this to cheap budget phones. If one needs an M2 iPad Air, I promise you that person will not consider buying a budget (Android) phone simply because it has a 120hz refresh rate. WAY too many people make these nonsensical comparisons to justify a meaningless point. 🤷‍♂️

@@housepianist All I'm saying that in 2024 120hz is a pretty basic feature and even budgets phones have better scrolling experience that's why it's so disappointing. If you're willing to compromise go for it for all I care
@housepianist
@housepianist 2 месяца назад
@@enok9343 Well OLED screens are “pretty basic” but not every device has them. Having 16g of RAM as a start is “pretty basic”. Having no bezels are “pretty basic”. My point is that you’re picking out one aspect of what’s “missing” from the iPad Air and suddenly, it’s not a good value proposition. This is SO common when criticizing new devices and software. No one has the capacity to analyze these things from a broader perspective. It’s always one thing that makes such a perceived difference in its usability. Maybe Apple will include 120hz refresh rate in future Air models but for now, why should it really matter? Maybe the new Air should be $200-$300 dollars like cheap Android phones because it doesn’t have the higher refresh rate. 🤷‍♂️ Does that fit into your “marketing strategy”? Keep in mind, I’m not saying I disagree with you. I just don’t understand why so many people are whiny about one or two things that, in their mind, is so overwhelmingly disappointing. They act as if a 60hz refresh rate will make the new Air useless. The last time I checked, 60hz refresh rate scrolling on the iPad still looks smooth and can get you from one screen to another very well. But I get it - if the new Air had a 120hz refresh rate, $750 would be a screaming bargain. 🙄

Upgrading to the new air 13” from the air 4, soon. Personally my air 4 is still perfect, but unfortunately the screen is too small for work related stuff. Just wondering if I might consider the mini for personal use, since the bigger screen might be too big in certain situations.

As a musician using my iPad Pro mainly for reading sheet music, the 13" Air is perfect for me. Sure 120Hz would be nice, and the quad speakers are great but as an upgrade from my 2015 12.9" iPad Pro this is what I've been waiting for. Longer battery and a bit less weight is more valuable to me over the nicer "Pro" features. As a teacher I'm hoping for Apple's back to school deal to include £100 gift card and I'll be able to get the base 13" iPad Air and Pencil Pro all in for only £768 instead of £928 which would be sick! 🤞

Your screen comparison section is marred by the light reflection hitting the Air. The dark corner is black but the rest of the screen is affected. I suspect they look similar to one another. I have both OLED and lcd iPads to test out and it’s different but not the way it’s presented here. It’s like the difference between 100% black and 85-90% black 10:27

At 10:27 is the iPad on the left less reflective because of the Paperlike? I had one on my 2018 iPad Pro but it was the original which made the display very grainy so I got rid of it. ok Noah, I agree with you, most people don't pay attention or care to know about refresh rate, however I think apple should still do away with the 60hz refresh rate and set a base standard of 90hz for all base iPad and iPhone's and 120hz for the pro devices. For 2024, I feel like 60 hz is a bit to low end for a smartphone in 2024, especially for apple's flagship smartphone prices.

If the Air got 90hz I think a lot of people who go for the Pro would get the Air next time they upgrade. Not sure how much it would tempt people up from the base iPad. If I didn't already have an M2 12.9 Pro I would likely have been tempted to get the Air, even with its 60hz display - I think it only bothers me so much on iPad because I got used to the 120hz on iPads over the last 5 years of owning them.

Hey Noah hope you’re doing well. Quite intrigued by your video. As a matter of fact I am considering to buy a ipad air this month. As I already have a MacBook Pro for my work, I would just use it for content consumption mostly, casual browsing, answering mails etc. I am kind of confused between 11 and 13 inches at the moment. What do you think would be the best choice for me ?
@sharkfintech5893
@sharkfintech5893 2 месяца назад
You really can't go too wrong with either one IMO, BUT keep in mind that tablet display size is subjective and a very personal choice. Different users will make very valid arguments for the largest tablets (14"+, like the Samsung Tab S9 Ultra or Lenovo Extreme Tab), down to the smallest ones (e.g., the 8" iPad Mini), based on how they use their device. My best advice to you is to go and try the 11" and 13" iPads at an Apple store, Wireless carrier location, BestBuy (North American retail chain), or any other store near you that stocks them & has working demo models. Open up & play with all the apps that you think you'll use, try typing and/or drawing on them, and physically pick them up to help determine the size/weight that you'll be comfortable with carrying around, using on a sofa or in bed, etc (just try not to set off the anti-theft alarms 😅). My primary tablet is a Samsung Tab S7 Plus (12.4" screen), because I use it for productivity (laptop substitute/alternative), and also prefer a good-sized display for media consumption. But it's _not_ lightweight, with all that glass & metal. I also have an old 9.7" iPad (Gen 5), and find it to be a bit small, so I may eventually replace that with a 13" M2 Air or 12.9" M2 Pro. Conversely, a good buddy of mine loves his 11" iPad Pro (2020 model) -- he prefers the lightweight portability of that form factor, and connects it to an external monitor when he wants more screen real estate. It's up to YOU; test 'em both out !

@@NoahHerman Hey Noah ! Concerning RAM, I think you'll find this _very_ interesting: I was listening to AppleInsider's recent Podcast regarding the M4 iPad Pro (and M2 Air as well). They kind of "debunked" the argument for 16 GB of RAM in any current or past IP Pro; they explained that Apple essentially (& _intentionally_ !) "throttles" nearly all iPad apps to a max of 8 GB of RAM. So unless one is a "storage hound" /power-user who absolutely NEEDS a 1 TB or more flash drive, paying up just to get more _perceived_ RAM on iPads currently makes very little sense. 🤔 😩 They also delved into the topic of how Apple intentionally "gatekeeps" iPadOS APIs -- even on their own apps (including the "pro" ones like Logic & FCP) -- ostensibly to maintain certain security standards, but let's face it, also very likely in order to keep the Mac versions superior. 😉 And that Apple doesn't encourage 3rd-party Developers to make iPad apps markedly different/better than their iOS/iPhone equivalents. A lot of "tablet geekaratari" to be sure, but that Podcast is most def worth a listen (and I'm primarily an Android dude, go figure) ! 🤣
