I'm a professional music mix engineer and freelance video editor. I got this laptop about 3 weeks ago (base model, 256gb ssd/8 gb ram). in the real world; this has been more than enough. I have worked on several 60+ track mixes without a hitch, as well as editing a couple 15 min+ videos on Final Cut. the only problem I faced was storage, but nothing an external ssd can't fix. it did all this while only getting a bit warm for a bit of the video editing and its rendering. if you get this, base model or not, you will have gotten a very nice machine that can handle work loads without breaking a sweat

What's your opinion about a photographer getting it? I was gonna get the 16gb with thr 512ssd. I'm not wanting to change laptops for st least 5-6 years. So any advice would be appreciated

@@thisguy2588 firstly, there will be an apple event this march, and its pretty much confirmed the new M3 air is coming out then, so id say wait for that if you can afford to wait an extra month. about the M2, that model will last you a good fair amount of time. image editing requires less processing power than music making, i believe, so it should be fine for you. the 16 GB might be a bit much but its better to have it then to not. id say your biggest concern would be the SSD space, but 512 should be enough again im not a photographer so take what i said with a grain of salt (remember to turn on low power mode, it gives you a good few extra hours of battery and you probably wont tell the difference.

I’m a freelance graphic designer (photoshop, illustrator and indesisgn) mostly. i edit videos but only for my social media small business and also mix music so I use rekordbox and similar softwares I was thinking to buy macbook air 2023 M2 8gb ram and 512SSD will that be enough? Now I know i should get the 16gb of ram 256gb ssd instead but It’s not available where I live Especially that the 8gb ram is available at a good price here $1400 Is there any better alternative at this price range?

@@Rita_shamounfor the price range, 8gb 512 Is going to be good, since videos take a lot of space. again, its a good idea to maybe wait a month or less for the new M3 air to come out, but if thats your only choice, you should be fine. the only problem i could see is with video editing, since that usually gets it warm in long editing sessions. if youre not editing 8K raw you should be fine, but again; wait for the m3 if you can

I just went for the base 13 inch m2 air. I'm upgrading from my early 2015 13 inch mbp. I don't use a laptop for anything super demanding, that's what my desktop is for. It's just funny to me how most of the reviews I see for this config are coming from power users. Obviously if you're a power user on a laptop, get the Pro.

I am using this M2 256G and so far everything is good. I didn't experience any lag while editing content in Photoshop and Illustrator which was my problem with my old laptop. I guess the thing that has a "lag" moment is when I manipulate a file from an external drive. Nevertheless, all are perfectly well. I might consider an upgrade possible once I have more things to do which I guess some people can do for me.

To be fair, I have a m1 MacBook Air and it’s been flawless. Handles everything I throw at it. I’ll have 30 tabs open and run 3-4 apps at the same time and works like a champ. I even video edit on it and it handles that great too. I even use it to connect 2 monitors with a display link dock and it does that too. In a year of ownership it’s only gotten hot twice. Unless you’re a RU-vidr and you need to edit huge files then maybe get 16gb but for the average pro user it’ll be fine. I also got it brand new for $750. It’s a beast! If Apple drops prices for the ram upgrade only then I would upgrade the ram but 8gb has been great for me.

Got mine jan 2023 and only have 17 battery cycles on it 100% battery health, the only complaint I have is that the air feels almost too thin? It just feels as though I always have to be incredibly careful around it and when handling it feels not sturdy at all. I know a main feature of the air is to be thin and lightweight but still it’s hard not to notice but overall definitely happy with the performance and battery, I’ll get 11-13 hours actual use and if I leave it on sleep for 4-5 days that’s equivalent to an hour or two usage so I could get an extra hour or so

I’ve got the 13” in Midnight 16GB/512 and I agree. Overall I’m still happy with it’s size, I find the Pro models a little too thick for my liking now. Unfortunately my iPhone camera chipped the Macbook case. Interestingly I find compared to when I tried an M1 Macbook Air at the Apple store it’s not as snappy to open apps instantly like the M1 appeared to at the time. With that said, performance and battery life wise it’s in a league of its own. Ultimate daily driver. Can’t wait to see what performance we’ll get in this form factor on M4/5/6

I just bought the base model 15 inch. You kinda got me worried there talking about storage and RAM, but I made the decision since I haven’t done anything more than casual web/document use in the past 2+ years. I even hate having too many browser tabs open, so I think I made the right call.

⁠@davidnewman1i do occasionally notice a small hiccup here and there with lots of tabs open + other programs, but it’s very minor and lasts a fraction of a second. Overal it’s the best macbook I ever owned in terms of usability: the screen size, weight, thinness and battery life combination is amazing.

Hi Arthur, I have a few questions: Should I trade in my 14 Pro to 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max? I prefer the smaller size of the 13/14 Pro and my previous 12 Pro Max was to big and heavy to use. But the Titanium will make the Pro Max lighter. Is it safe to get a 13 Pro brand new from parallel importer store? Should I upgrade to the 15 Pro/Max or 16 Pro/Max? On the one hand, it’s an S year (every 3 years) since the iPhone 13 Pro so it is usually a more stable and reliable iPhone. On the other hand, odd numbered iPhones since the iPhone 11 Pro (every 2 years) have better battery life and are more stable than even numbered iPhones.

@@4l3kis No, it’s because of battery, overheating, scrolling stuttering screen issues and lags in games issues of my iPhone 14 Pro. Software updates didn’t help and Apple Store employee checked it and said that the phone is ok. Therefore I want to either buy a 13 Pro from parallel importer store or trade in to the 15 Pro / Pro Max. Or maybe wait for the 16 Pro / Pro Max because it’s a S year of the iPhone since the 13 Pro. What do you think?

I switched from a Windows laptop to the base model M2 Macbook Air three months ago, and overall, it has been a good experience, except for Excel processing. In my experience with Windows laptops, even half priced of the Macbook Air, Excel processing is significantly better. If anyone has a solution for this issue, please let me know

Any keyboard that uses ABS plastic keycaps will wear/shine and will pretty quickly depending on individuals with oily skin. Even PBT keycaps will at some point, though it takes significantly longer.

@@cactusc2612 The software experience is great coming from Intel, battery is phenomenal and performance is fantastic. However, build quality wise I think I got really, really unlucky and got a defective model. Tiny dimples and dents started showing on my display on week 3 (yes right after the return window) and I got that replaced with warranty already. And for whatever reason my keyboard and trackpad doesn’t feel as clicky as a couple M1 and M2 Airs I’ve compared to, not sure if it’s related to it being customized from Apple because the ones I’ve compared to are all stock configs. Last but not least, the DSP of the M2 Air appears to be buggy so you can hear a distortion at mid range frequency and it’s noticeable even when watching RU-vid videos at half volume. You can find all three issues on reddit but the keyboard could be just me being too picky. I still like it tho the performance suits my needs, able to edit a full project on final cut unplugged and the design is beautiful.

@@cactusc2612 Oh also some weird stuff about Apple silicon is the external monitor support limitation and the USB controller is weird. My Samsung T5 SSD is only able to run at 5Gbps while it runs on full 10Gbps on my Intel machines. But all Apple silicon products have the issues the USB just didn’t get as much media coverage.

As a student and a part timer at a computer retail store i use this mac for both (the 8gb and 256gb model) and it has no problems at all. I write emails and do paperwork quotations at work and some basic Microsoft office stuffs for uni. Main reason i got this was at work they use a Lenovo laptop thats 16gb ram and i5 10th gen and this mac blows the office laptop out of water.. I get that the base model gets complaints from every RU-vidr there is but for an average consumer don’t worry it’s enough and just go for it.

I have M1 Air base model and the 256gigs is totally fine. Running business, connecting to the server with windows, 2-3 light games (have xbox for gaming), 2-4 movies downloaded in 4k and still have 98gigs free. So for normal basic people with office job it's totally fine to have basic models.

I’m still running a base model M1 Air and I’m just now starting to run into slow downs. I do a fair amount of large file photo editing (60 MP) and I make designs for my business in Adobe Illustrator. If I didn’t use illustrator so much, I probably wouldn’t even notice things slowing down a bit.

I have the 2020 base MacBook Pro with the intel i5 8gb ram and 256gb sad and is plenty fast for web browsing and videos even after 10 tabs opened in chrome 🤷🏻‍♂️, I can only imagine the M2 soc is much faster so yeah the base is enough for most people.

just got 15" MacBook Air and I'm loving it. btw I didn't get your theory regarding silicon keyboard protector, im a bit dust freak so I do cover the openings like headphone or cable slots covered with protectors and I always use a silicon case on my keyboard. so can you elaborate why silicon cases are bad for the keyboards or for the screen?

@@familymovie5799 the 16 inch is no problem on the couch or in bed. At least for me, I'm relatively tall and also have big hands. I've had the 16 inch on my lap many times. The size is perfect, but it's not so suitable when traveling on a plane or bus. I now also have the 13 inch M2 Air for this purpose. I don't have any wear and tear on the keyboard with my MBP 16 inch, it still looks like day 1 and has only had 150 charging cycles. Of course I prefer to use the Air on the couch now, but back then that wasn't a problem with the 16 inch.

I have an 8gb MacBook Air M2 and I have never run out of memory, but I don’t edit lots of 4K videos, which seems to be what most RU-vid reviewers are using as the standard by which all laptops are judged 😂

I think I recall that as well. These YTR's don't make sense half the time. Every time he said something negative it had to do with doing complicated tasks like graphic work or coding which he and everyone else know that the AIR wasn't designed for.

@@PLANETWATERMELON Exactly. MacBook Air was made with the normal consumer in mind. He was berating it as only good for watching videos and editing documents. Duh, that's the point of this machine. Email, browsing, office apps, etc. RU-vidrs think everyone that uses a computer uses it like THEM - for video editing, high-end graphics, etc. That is exactly what the Pro versions are for. I've had my M2 15" MacBook Air basic model since it was released and I love it. It does everything I need. It is fast, stable, fluid and beautiful. I've always used Windows, but it has become a cesspool. Very happy with this - it works for what I intended it for.

I bought MacBook Air M2 for a great deal at Best Buy! I trade my iPad Pro m1 they gave me $600 credit so I used for the computer and I paid less than $600 for a brand new MacBook with apple care

@@achysprings In general I would agree that if you don't know then don't get. But, an Air with 16gb & 512 storage is cost $1500. Why not just get a 14" Pro M1 for the same price or M2 Pro for $250 more (yes I have seen it for $1749) and completely know you have everything you would need? $1500 is a lot to spend only to find out in 2-3 months you really wish you went with a Pro model. Buy it nice or buy it twice!!!

Ive been using the macbook retina(2016) for the past 7 years and one of the main criticisms for it was the keyboard. I honestly loved using it especially the keyboard(some keys died but still). Today I made up my mind about the new purchase and went to the apple store just to see the device one more time and when I started typing on it , I hated the keyboard and the trackpad :/ they feel cheap and wonky imo, they have no resistance they just go straight down and they have decent travel distance since they sit pretty high. Trackpad is too "deep", way less feel and haptic feedback was better in my old macbook imo. The keyboard and tpad of m1 macbook air sitting next to it felt so much nicer and macbook pro had great feeling keyboard. But as you said everything else makes it great for school so I made the purchase, I hope I can get used to it.

Picked one of these up after my Windows lappy from 2019 bit the dust. I'm going to keep a Windows machine around for heavy lifting (CAD and gaming) but I think this fits the bill nicely for mobile and web based stuff which is what I was using the laptop for 99% of the time anyways.

I sit in the same bost as you. I have an extremely powerful PC that gets the job done without a problem (i9, 3070 TI, 32GB Ram) but I also want a portable device when I’ll go back home from my university (probably twice a month and on holidays). Do you think that the base model Air 13 M2 can run some basic CAD, do coding and browsing fairly easy? Or I’d need the 16GB Ram version for these tasks. All the demanding things I’ll have them done on my PC anyways, I just want a portable device for homeworks, browsing and some work.

If every RU-vidr could stop complaining about the performance of an obviously compromised base model as if higher specs don’t exist, that would be wonderful. All the videos should be five seconds and tell the viewer to upgrade the base memory and storage, because that’s every videos’ conclusion

I have Macbook pro m1 with 32gb ram. And it blew me away after 4days of use, I was just using photoshop, unity, slack and 3tabs in chrome it hang. I had to do force shutdown. Big name, small vision. And why near the track pad where there's little cutout so you can lift the screen, has edge so sharpe. My finger literally got stabbed and started bleeding😂. Tho mag safe is ❤

The point: who open more than 25 tabs at once?? I use to have like 3-5, no more because it’s impossible to need more when you are doing a particular task. So I don’t see the point and the utility to affirm so dramatically that 8 RAM is not enough for that reason, because in a normal world nobody is going to have that problem

I just think it stems from apple’s warning not to put anything in between your screen and keyboard bc it increases chances of scratches and lcd to get fucked up. Altho, my mb 2017 doesn’t get damaged from silicone cover too

Did you do any research on the laptop youre talking about? MBP 14” has adaptive refresh rate, it does get brighter than 500 nits. Things you list as flaws are not there. 256GB SSD is not slow, its still 3GB/s. This is just hilarious.

@@JXDNL050 exactly this. The air only really makes sense for people who either want maximum portability or don’t need a lot of storage or power. As capable as the Air is, you get so much more for not much of a stretch by going Pro if you need to upgrade the Air on more than one thing. By the time you’re paying £1500+ for an Air, you may as well get a refurbished pro 14 or something unless that extra weight or marginal increase in size is a major issue. When the base Air has 16GB of RAM, it’ll be a steal. And if it ever gets that Pro Motion screen… it will be near perfect for pretty much anyone outside of actual pros with very demanding workloads.

These reviewer who own every mac laptop varient known to man must use 10 or more laptops a day inorder to review each model after a period of tine. Im just happy with my m1 macbook pro, it can access an external thunderbolt drives at 2700mbs, display is fine, speakers are fine, and does exactly what I bought it for. I wont be buying an M3 or new iphone because Im not a millionaire lol.

I just don’t see the need for a touchscreen. What does that let me do that I can’t already do? It is just odd to me. I had a touchscreen laptop before my macbook and I almost never used the touchscreen. I only used the touchscreen when the laptop froze and the cursor stopped working which isn’t at all an ideal situation.

How’s your 2012 Chromebook holding up today? I’ve got a 2012 MacBook Pro that refuses to quit. I did upgrade the ram and he’d to ssd but you’ve got to appreciate that snout a brand. I have a lot of apple products released from 2010- 2023 and the only ones that don’t work have water damage or were dropped.

The air is far more capable than just a web surfing machine. Especially if you get more than 8gb of RAM. That’s what holds the Air back most.
