I sidegraded from a 16” M1 Pro MBP 16/1000 to a 13” M3 Air 24/1000, specifically for the portability. I love it! Edit: my replies are blocked so I’ll note here that I’m typically at 50% memory pressure and 75% memory usage, so it doesn’t need 24GB but it uses it (well at least 18 of it).
Aren’t you worried that your need for 24 gb of RAM might be a true indicator you need a Pro device? Any task that requires more than 16 GBs of Apple’s unified memory is a task that will throttle an Air device.
@@sharonb.9128 Mmm, my earlier reply disappeared. Anyway, no, I like to have a lot of apps open, plus using Xcode and the simulator. All that uses more memory and less processor.
I think the only way the Pro is worth it over the Air, is if you are doing a heavy workload for long periods of time... aka you need a fan or maybe the extra ports
Thanks for sharing, great video. I was going to buy the 15” M3 Air 16GB/512GB for $1,699 but Best Buy had the 13” MacBook Pro M2 24GB/1TB for only $1,299. Yes the bigger screen would have been better for my programming task but 24GB RAM on a M2 from only $1,299 was a must buy. If i ever need more screen space I’ll just connect it to my 27” monitor.
I got the MacBook Pro 13 M2 with 16GB Ram and 512GB storage in the UK for £999 in a one day sale a few months ago. It has been a real bargain. Touchbar is a bit weird but the machine is better than the Air models simply because the active cooling provides better sustained performance. The Air machines throttle too easily.
yeah that was worth the sacrifice on screen size now doubt about it! Having 24GB of ram is gonna make that M2 fly plus pairing with a external monitor like you said, I would take your config over a Pro even
yeah those Macs were in a weird place. But if all you need is that performance its a good choice especially as it comes with a fan for better sustained workloads
You can just get a dongle for the SD card reader for less than $20. - M3 Air 13.6 inch base model for $1,099 - Spec bump to 16/512 configuration (RAM/SSD) for $400 - MOKiN Dongle with 128GB SD card reader for $20 Total = $1,519
yeah I picked one up off amazon for like $25, and thats exactly the spec/combo I have and I'm loving it! I just wish apple would bring that port as its barely even a pro thing I feel like, lots of people are using cameras one way or another
Just bought one of these and love it. I want to connect it to a monitor to display everything like I believe you do. What do I need to do that as I can’t find anything. Thank you. I am a big fan
great video bro... I think the m3 macbook air is good so a video by zone of tech and it performed better than the m3 14 inch macbook.... considering the weight I'd go for the air
Highly suggest autohiding your app dock. You'd gain some incredible vertical space that way. I'm selling my m1 max for a maxed out m3 air. If I need more power I'm going to get a mac studio. But... I doubt I will.
I’ve always gone back and forth on hiding the dock, I haven’t done it in a while so I’ll definitely try it again. A maxed out M3 Air will be enough I believe, there isn’t much mine can’t do and it’s not even close to the maxed out option!
Just like the calculator coming to ipad (rumored) the sd card will be in the air......... after 15 years 😂. Great video btw!!! I've always loved the air even if I don't have one. I just kept visiting the apple store and experiencing them 🤣
okay woah your talking about a high tech piece of software that needs to make perfect mathematical calculations at any moment in time... you can't compare the two common 😂😂
How about the notch when you watch videos in full screen? I know that using the toolbar you can hide it, but in full screen with other apps it is there...
@@ConorButkovic Thank you, does the noth not appear in full screen RU-vid videos either? For example, in this video of yours, on my Windows laptop at full screen it occupies the whole screen and if I had a noth this would be seen.
have the same just with 256gb - the 512gb for 200 or more wasnt worth it imho. for that i got external drives. luckely even the 256gb drive has now again two chips, otherwise it would have been a harder decision for 512gb or not! Thanks for the comparison vid!
honestly I would of done the same if it wasn't just a standard option on the website to get the 512GB. I am always team external SSD its such a better solution to the storage
I think it’s just the default to stress test it… but yeah you got a good point lol. What do you think is a better test? (could be helpful for future videos)
@@ConorButkovic You could cover more things like large blender object importing or a blender render. Compiling a standard codebase, etc. A fair amount of people buy MacBooks for programming, so that would be useful. Also general cases of watching videos for extended periods of time, zoom calls, teams, alongside battery drain comparisons. Cover the use cases of what some other types of people do in their normal day would be quite useful!
@@utopiadeferred really appreciate that feedback!! I got some more MacBook Air videos in the works so I will definitely need to test out those applications/use cases! Thank you for the tips!!
@@ConorButkovic thats true but considering it has rtx 4070 in it surprised me especially for samsung ultra book 4 i never own a mac only ipad and iphone but i am really curious about samsung ultrabook 4 with rtx built in there
