M3 MacBook Pro VS M3 PRO!

Apple has a new 14" MacBook Pro at a cheaper $1599 price point complete with a 120hz promotion mini-led display, but instead of coming with a "Pro chip" the new base level MacBook Pro comes with an M3 chip so is this base level MacBook Pro worth it as a pro level machine and is it better than the M2 MacBook Pro it replaces?

Sorry there is a mistake in one of the charts at 5:18 - The labels are wrong the first bar is the results from the M3 Pro (14 core GPU) while the second result is from the M3 chip - not the M2 Pro (19 core gpu) The scores are correct, the labels are wrong.

The base 16" is configured identically to the 14" with 12-core/18 GB. If you put 1 TB on each, the difference is $300. other than ~28% more screen real estate (and a return to 22-hr from 18-hr), what might the difference in performance be? Obviously, it could easily have better thermals based on being bigger. But is it also a better performer than the 14?

Similar specs upgrade of base m3 gets you very close to the m3 pro, with the pro getting another thunderbolt port and multiple display support, additional cores, and space black color. The most significant upgrade being the space black

2GB of more ram, CPU and GPU are 50% faster, SSD is faster, extra cooling system, quieter, extra TB port, extra monitor support for $200 more. In the PC world with no apple tax, either the CPU and GPU upgrade alone would cost $200. The base M3 in a Pro body is a terrible deal!

I'm on the m3 pro and i have used a bunch of opened apps. I left my computer open... and slowly I see the ram useage go down second by second. the dynamic cacheing looks like it see which apps are not being used, it optimizes them, and it for the apps that have some usage on them, it slowly caches things down until you open it up again. But i see this trend where the data is going down when you do not touch your computer and it slowly fills up to where it was as you use it more. Overall alex zilinsky, ran some bench marks ( a software developer) and I can confirm: the SSD speeds are back up to double the speeds on the base model storages. Even for m3/ as for memroy bandwidth, you absolutely will not notice at all. M1 pro and m2 pro series are so fast the data gets chewed through before you saturated and froze the system. You might notice hiccups id you use a 12 bit footage with 3 stacks and have a bench mark open in the background for the consumer chips: but for the pro and max chips: apple has really peaked. All that's left for them to do in my opinion is to bring back the clalm shell design next year since their chips woul dhave so much damn battery. I used my macbook pro for 5 hours now since it left the box and it went down 10%, and that's me hammering the brightness and blasting the new speakers. watching my podcasts are so amazing because I thought I wouldn't notice, but voices are deeper because you can hear the entire low end from the drivers... I'm coing from the last intel macbook ever made. The spaceblack made me pull the trigger. And I changed my mind last minute from the 12 core to the 11 core m3 pro because the 11 core m3 pro has the same and slightly better cpu AND gpu than the top spec m2 pro. And I always see developers praising and hanging onto their m1 pro.... I think that's largely in part due to the damn fast ssd speeds and they brought it back up. RAM is not a problem. And They gave us ray tracing for editing. Resident evil runs a locked and steady 30 fps on an iphone. Haven't downloaded that game because mac isn't supposed to be for gaming, but it has some games and it's very capable. 9/10..... I will be returning it today and swapping it out for more storage because I'd want to hold onto this machine for more than 2 years as initially thought.

thank you it means so much to know how much fps it can do so i can compare it to previous silicon to see the gains of pro against max, right now i own m1 imac 24 inch with 16gb ram and it struggles to keep with my daily task, and today i made the decision to commit to m3 macbook pro 14.2 inch space black reason being is the cheapest pro laptop to get and it takes me few months to get it from 0, compared to max chip which i want but sadly it cost twice the price of pro meaning in waiting time above a year meeaning that next macs will come out by the time i buy a max, thefore i will just commit to the cheapest pro chip this year and learn the laptop but from your video i love the way it looks and shows great results so im sure i will be happy selling my imac for it, it is still brand new i got it less than half year ago but im sick of white basels and light colour and i was hesitating to get pro because it had only grey and silver, while i do belive i will miss 24 inch display of 4.5k resulution it can be solved in time by getting xdrr apple display of 32 inch which is a 6k display with mini led if i prefer size of display, same goes for external add ons like keyboard mice or bluetooth speakers, which could sound like mac studio zone but it is different, it is very expensive and lacks in every aspect aside from power rest.

I'm upgrading from the 2020 M1 MBP...which i believe is 8 core CPU and 8 core GPU. I use Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro (though, not simultaneously), and edit SLOG from my Sony A7 IV in FCP, with some basic color grading/LUTs. My current machine handles this pretty well, but there are certainly some times where it can struggle a bit. Though the base M3 is impressive, my gut tells me that the MBP with the M3 PRO chip (12 core CPU / 18 core GPU) is the move for me and should be plenty of computer, but the Max is tempting as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

@@riley5409 That extra core of M3 Pro doesn't count, because M3 Pro has one less P-core and 2 more E-cores, which cancel each other out, so they both perform about the same. I think you’re right, if someone just wants some of the features from the MacBook pros, but actually doesn’t do any type of pro workflows consistently, or has no ambitions to do any of those workflows then yes the M3 MacBook Pro makes sense. However, this device has no headroom to grow. You didn’t really show any multitasking and any type of multitasking that includes a combination of certain pro level application and maybe more normal applications, and web browsing completely bottlenecks the a 8 GB of ram. The ram pressure is just way higher when you’re multitasking. And if you’re interested in doing any type of pro application that uses GPU performance like blender, you can actually just crash the software if it’s not the only software that you’re running at at the time. So you know I think that in general, if you’re somewhere in between a pro level user and a normal user, the main question to ask yourself is what task do you plan to be doing with this MacBook Pro That would be considered a pro level application? if it’s just video editing with Final Cut Pro, you’re fine to get just a normal MacBook Pro. However, if you want to use multiple Adobe applications at the same time, potentially, da Vinci, resolve, or blender then you might want to look at M3 pro MacBook Pro. I think at a $200 difference after you upgrade to 16 GB of ram it really becomes a hard sell to not move up to the M3 Pro. I think multiple creators and myself could agree on one thing which is I don’t really think this device should be specked up to the 16 GB, if you need that just go to the M2 Pro or M3 pro MacBook Pro. In the battery life debate I do believe is important, but the battery life issues that the 14 inch M2 MacBook Pro had have been significantly mitigated due to the E core and P core allocation on the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14 inch. Right now that makes the baseline M3 MacBook Pro have about 20% longer battery life over the M3 pro MacBook Pro. I do not think that that’s insignificant, but I think the real world experience of that extra 20% might not be as noticeable as it seems. Like realistically at the end of the day, that’s the difference between having 8% battery leftover versus 12% battery. What I would actually like to see even though this is a harder test is does the M3 have better standby time then the M3 pro MacBook Pro. Because if the M3 can essentially hold its battery longer while not in use in addition to being able to last longer, that would be a really big shifter for me. However if it’s about the same that 20% difference I think you actually get a good trade for that 20%. You actually get a pro level laptop that’s still last incredibly long time, but I feel like if the M3 is going to be a battery champ vs the M3 Pro it’s gotta be like really good not just slightly better than the M3 pro.

I agree! I'd love to see a comparison between the regular M3 24GB and the M3 Pro base, and particularly, how well the battery does. Base M3 with upgraded memory becomes a far better value proposition for a semi-pro user if the battery life is the differentiator

Not using an Intel mac with a chip designed 10 years ago, using a hyper modern competitor from AMD or Intel, 16GB vs 8 on a mac, through heavy data sets that exceed 8GB, not just swapping around a few small programs that swap could mask ok.

Well, i am still on intel 13 inch and i am an indie dev, so my apps are not so large and complicated, but still need to run docker etc. 8gb of ram is not even a joke in this times, especially that is shared with graphics, Next thing is that crappy single fan, and only one monitor support. If i am not mistaken even 2 port old 13 inch intel MBP could run 2 external monitors. So... ram upgrade is a must. It is 18 hundred bucks. For 200 bucks more you have better cooling, better cpu and gpu, support for 2 monitors which you could consider pro feature maybe 20 years ago, and 2 gigs of ram. If i will buy a new one it will be probably m3 pro model.

I got myself an MacBook Pro M3-pro chip (just the base 11core/14core version). When I use it for light tasks the battery life is amazing. taking notes and browsing during lectures resulted in a 7 hour use time with 86% battery left. I wonder if those 18 hours displayed when you buy the computer is for quiet heady duty work. If I use it for light tasks the battery would last days. right now just using it for light tasks like programming and Matlab occasionally. the future will be more heavy duty 3d modeling and engineering simulating programs. Conclusion. MacBook 14" M3-Pro is a quite amazing machine, I would not take into account the battery life difference between 18 and 22 hours. even this one has more than anyone could utilize. don't buy the base model unless you're on a budget

If I were to buy the new 14" MacBook Pro, I'd upgrade the RAM, max that out and max out the storage, 512GB of storage isn't enough. I do run most of my work and save them on external drives, but, more storage is just better. That cost will go up to $2,599 for it. That's for the regular M3 one they sell now. I already have the 2021 14" MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip with 1TB of storage, of course I spent big on this, it does the job for me, so don't expect me to upgrade. Great video - but your point about 8GB Unified Memory on the base model is important - I think most people agree 8GB is not enough (or at least doesn't future proof it) - so once you upgrade that to 16GB, and upgrade to 1TB memory SSD - you are comparing £2099 to £2299 for the M3Pro chip with 1 TB ssd (and you get extras eg more CPU & GPU and an extra port - and "Space Black" rather than "Space Grey"). Since the introduction of Apple silicon, it's the time of refurbished/preowned MacBooks in my opinion. M1 (Pro) is more than enough for most people, and even the old Intel models are getting really attractive now since their prices have fallen so much. I just bought a 16" i9 because I need to connect 2 external screens, want a big screen and good speakers, and I want to run x64 VMs. For most people, I'd recommend an M1/M2 MacBook Air, and if you need more than one external display, an M1 MBP. I think for most people, M1 Pro or M2 Pro is a better buy than an M3 (Pro) MBP. The M3 Max MBP made a huge leap, that's where going for the new one can really make sense.
