Afraid of heights? Join us for a view of the British Virgin Islands atop the world's largest sloop (single-masted sailboat) 247' (75.2m) M5 (ex Mirabella V). The mast is 295' above the waterline. The other boat shown is the Mirabella III which is 134' and looks small from this view. M5 was designed by yacht-designer Ron Holland, built by VT Shipbuilding, Woolston, Hampshire, England and launched in November 2003. It's billed as the largest single-masted yacht ever built.
The yacht was built for and originally owned by the former Chairman and CEO of the Avis Car Rental Company at a reported cost of over 50 million dollars and was the largest of the fleet of 3 superyachts in charter service. The yacht was sold in June 2011 and is privately owned and out of charter service. The yacht is under an extensive refit which the captain describes as a rebuild.
The video is taken by and narrated by the chief officer of Mirabella III who has now moved onto other superyachts. He is currently a 3000 ton master.
