M55 - The Motorway to the Sea (Preston - Blackpool) 

There is going to be a new road from the M55 that will go to the A583 and then a new bridge across the River Ribble to the A59, and then onto Leyland and Chorley where the M6/61/65 are.

When built the original plan was to build the M55 near to the centre of Blackpool, close to Blackpool's Bloomfield Road football ground & the Pleasure Beach. Would have been ideal & easier for away supporting football traffic & that attraction. However all sorts of things (e.g. cost) meant it never materialized. Instead they in the end built the single carriageway Yeadon Way.

Before the M55 officially opened, the RAF landed a Jaguar aircraft on the carriageway to prove its usefulness for bomber aircraft to use. I remember going to watch it land and take off again. One of the bridges has no central support columns which allow a bit more room for an aircraft to pass under it.

The M55 motorway is quite a short motorway in Lancashire. Very direct to Blackpool. Easy drive without any stops except when there is a accident or broken down vehicle. Hope it doesn’t become smart motorway. I think a new junction 2 could be built at Woodplumpton (B5411) to the northwest of Preston City Centre. Or renumber the junctions as Junction 3 to Junction 2 and Junction 4 to Junction 3.
