I'm a touring caravan owner, you've right of course, no MOT's needed for caravans or trailers...daft IMO. I have my caravan fully serviced every year (some dont bother), and i check the torque on every wheel bolt everytime I take my van on the road (again most dont bother). Great job done here, cant believe how quick you got it sorted.
@tothethreshold.9965
@tothethreshold.9965 7 месяцев назад
Agreed, Caravans should have an MOT same as any other road vehicle imo. I personally know three owners who do no maintenance at all on their death traps. Also its alarming the state i have seen a lot of hitches in, rotted out just waiting to fail. End of the day a fully loaded caravan at speed is a LOT of potential energy. While them separating is not very common when it happens it can be very destructive.

In New Zealand, it doesn't matter how old, or new any trailed connection is (and by trailed, I mean every type size and variant of towed behind vehicle, normally called "because it trails along" a TRAILER). Trailers can be very light (tiny wee things) to normal Trailer/Caravan - and yes they are IN that class, the everyday workers flat deck, or holiday full house or portable job site (Portaloo and workshop) what'sit, "shed on wheels", for a workers jobsite / office "larger trailer". These are in the same / similar class as boat trailers, which also need regular WOF tests. Fail a test and it needs to be recertified at a proper certifying garage, before it can be issued a new WOF/ Then there are the HEAVY trailers, normally towed behind Heavy Goods Vehicles, either as single axle units, or as full trailers, called combined trucks (you call 'em lorries), which have to pass a Certificate of Fitness. These used to be every six months, but since 2000, now are allowed to be every year (same as modern cars). BUT, fail a COF and it's off the road with it, until it can pass a retest at a heavy goods vehicle certifier, such as VTNZ

Nearside leg's down on caravan and two slippery Jim's under the legs, piece of piss. Glad I'm retired, I'd had enough of dealing with vehicles that shouldn't have even been on the road, picked caravanet up North Bound on that section that lost a wheel but it wasn't just the wheel! I think the main issue is caravans / trailers aren't meant to do the speeds I've seen some drivers going at. The speed limit when towing is 60mph on a motorway, but I've seen many drivers towing in excess of 70mph
@QUIX4U
@QUIX4U 6 месяцев назад
It depends mostly on how they load the interiors, for the trip. If light loaded at the front, with heavier items at the rear, it "floats" the back axle of the towing vehicle, meaning that it has way too much of it's own weight on the steering wheels, which makes steering all that much harder (and slower to react to anything, thus it slowly sets up a "hunting" sensation, where the a'RRR's of the trailer tries to pass the front of the tow vehicle, 1st on one side then the other, until it escalates into a full-blown twisty-twist, with the trailer heading one way and dragging the tow vehicle to other way, whereupon (even as it's going back) the driver gives the steering wheel a tug to control it, thus causing more violent sideways yaw - until the trailer is becoming so violent it lifts the inside tires as it yanks the tow vehicle around. It's on it's last legs when that occurs aming for total roll-over, unless. Unless the driver hits the gas, straightening out the combo, to then apply the trailer service brakes and NOT those of the tow vehicle, keeping the trailer dead weighted behind, until the driver gets the speed well below about 45mph. Most people do the exact opposite and hit the tow vehicle brakes, stopping the ability to steer, and causing a massive out of control roll-over. Oh sure, they slow it down, as it rips it all apart. sliding along on it's side or roof or whatever, until everything arrives at 0 speed. However, if they load the caravan heavily at the front, it weighs down on the tow-ball so hard it LIFTS the front of the tow vehicle so high, as to float it's front end, lifting the steer wheels off the deck, which also (more rapidly) means that the driver loses all steering as well as the ability to slow the combination. It then takes off as if on a sprinted race to wherever, and wherever races up to turn it all over asap
@QUIX4U
@QUIX4U 6 месяцев назад
It matters not one iota how off centered any load is, or how out of service any trailer has been left to rot away, a 1st gear crawl, can get it to it's final destination "intact" / albeit several days late. Unlike a fast tow, which will most likely flip the combo before the 1st corner.

When you open your drivers door, there is one part of the door (where the locking mechanism lies) that faces sideways, and the metal plate parts facing backwards (if you open it full). I put conspicuity reflective tape pieces on mine, after i saw an accident like that. its inexpensive really. I bought the 3m one, that they put on the european refrigerated trailers, it stays on metal quite nice. Also if you want precut ones, ask for silo/cistern trailer reflective tape, they are precut pieces.

When strapping on the O/S on a smart motorway even with a lane closure if highways are in attendance ask one of them to stand at the back of the recovery and act as a spotter while you work. Always think of safest practice when recovering on a motorway. Also always cross strap backwards with a caravan. Strapping forward only won’t stop the caravan coming off the deck sideways in the event of an emergency stop. Sorry not quite textbook.

@@GDBRescueandrecovery you're welcome. Yeah, it's not a tool I use every day but definately worth the occupied space in the toolbox when I use it. Lessens the potential for damage to a customers car. Missing wheels and broken ball joints are still a pain because you have to jack it up to get the skate under it, but it's definately much gentler on the car or trailer. A tip though is you will need to put a plastic skate or slippy as you call them, in front of the control arm skate to form a ramp when it transitions onto the deck of the truck from the road, or it will catch and start to tip it over as you winch it over the edge.

@juliogonzo2718
@juliogonzo2718 Год назад
That's usually what happens. Sometimes they are overtightened and fail too. I've towed probably a hundred trailers missing wheels and most common failure is the grease in the hub dries up due to neglect and the bearing fails and the hub and wheel separate. Boat trailers are probably most common for wheel offs because they are in and out of the water and the grease gets water in it. people never grease the hub if they have fittings or repack the hubs regularly when they don't have a grease fitting. They have money for a nice boat but don't have $35 for a grease gun.

At 13:04 it says there’s no mot for caravans or car trailers. And in brackets. ( should be really ) how do you mot a caravan or a car trailer. As both are not motorised vehicles. Both are pulled behind a motor vehicle. It’s the driver that needs to be educated. Or even fined should this happen on the motorway. At the end of the day it’s the drivers responsibility to make sure that they have a secure load. That should include checking the brakes on any caravan or trailer. It’s not that difficult to do. As caravans and huge car trailers have brakes anyway. It’s not that difficult to have your caravan on a slight gradient. Check the brakes while hitching it up to the car. While moving the caravan pull back on the hitch. And the brakes should operate and stop the caravan. After all the tow hitch is connected up to a series of steel rods that in turn are connected to the caravan brakes.

There's really nothing smart about these stupid smart motorways. Every one is a deathtrap now.

They closed the second lane after the incident, I see this far too frequently where they close lanes afterwards and not before. Very dumb system, all human input / actioned.

Do you really need to be filming on the side of a motorway? I understand uploading to RU-vid and just having a GoPro on you, but I think recording on your phone for instagram and having somebody else record you is a bit unnecessary. Any one of them truck drivers could look over at their phone and plow through the lot of you, so you don’t really want to be messing around for content
