Thanks man! I hadn't seen anyone do a video like this so hoped it would be helpful for some who were really trying to figure out how much it costs to do this "right". Thanks for stopping by!

Looks like you made some good choices for cam and parts, and that price seems in line. One minor thing I noted: if the only change you made in the primary was to replace those clutch springs, I don't think you need to remove the outer primary cover. Should have been able to do that with only the derby cover removed. I think a lot of people would have upgraded the stock compensator while they were at it, which would, of course require removal of the outer primary.

Incorrect. I talked to several techs about this and you do need to pull the primary cover off. If you pull the derby cover off you can see that the clutch spring to replace is not perfectly centered. To get it off and on properly you need to slowly back out each one at a time and the same with the reinstall and that's not possible the way they are oriented in the primary. There are some earlier M8 models where that's a little different - but on my 23 ST that's not possible.

@@MotoATXI’m willing to believe that, as I haven’t tried it myself, but that surprises me.

Great information… I think all this is all over priced. I put a MHP 485 cam with all the fixens in my 2018 Breakout last week. Includes Tappet cuffs, crank sprocket, Feuling lifters, new cam bearing, adjustable push rods I’m talking all the extra stuff that everyone is doing. New pump, cam plate and so on…it cost me almost $2000 for the parts. Completed the install in 3.5 hrs myself. Ok if you count all the specialty tools I’m up to $2400. I just don’t get $2000 in labor! This was my first time doing a cam chest. It’s fairly simple if you watch some of the videos on you tube. I am refrigeration tech and this was very easy to me. My bike runs like a beast now ! Tuned with power vision 4. Had a custom map from Lucas at fuel Moto. Hell I forgot to add I put in 5.5 injectors also from fuel Moto included in the $2000 for parts. My point is we don’t have to spend the $$ for ridicules labor. Do it yourself save your money! I am not knocking this video. Thank you for the time you put into it.❤

Thanks for the thoughtful response! I get it - I'm pretty mechanically inclined myself...but I'm busy and just wanted it done right. If I had a beater bike or something I'd bought used that I was going to bang on...sure, I'd take it apart and wouldn't mind experimenting and learning there. But not on my brand new 23 bike. :)

The MHP cam is a Star Racing 30/30 for those who don't know.👋

Don’t do it at the Stealership!!!!! I did it in my garage over a week or so taking my time. No need for the can and chest plate either!!! I put a 475C with fuel Moto adjustable pushrods and just parts cost me $750 shipped!!! I’d say around $1000 with some tools I had to buy. You’ll save at least $3000 if you do it yourself brother… Just sayin

LOL it's too late for that dude - it's done. Again, the point of this video is that there are a lot of ways to do this. You can do it on the 'cheap' or just take care of some of the lame stock parts while you're in there. The S&S tappet covers are a perfect example - same with the stock plastic intake manifold. Sure, you can do just the cam and stick all the stock stuff back in there - it's your bike. I have solid piece of mind now that my bike is way better than the stock configuration and one of the things that was most important to me was reliability. It costs me a few more bucks - but I have that now.

@@MotoATX I did the Harley stage 2 on my 2023 from the dealer bc I wanted to keep the warranty while beating on it a bit with more than stock power to make sure it not a dud. First new bike .. most expensive bike ever had (2023 FLTRX). I was so fkn blown away with the tuning work from the guy there who I’ve since built a great relationship with.. him and the entire service dept at Conrad’s HD. Dude worked miracles with that stupid SEPST. Landed up doing a 124 with cr482 with all the supporting mods. Billet ramp, lockup clutch etc. It was way more expensive than doing it at the Indy shop that I knew but I knew the level of work and service I’d get at Conrad’s. I knew if I had an issue they’d be on it IMMEDIATELY. Wanted them to check something before I head to Daytona.. was Saturday. Dude dropped what he was doing to check on the bike and just brought me back to talk to me while he was tuning another bike (time is money .. but the fact he made that time for me. THAT is worth the premium in price. If u got a Indy shop that can run u from the front of the line if u in need. And trust them and they do immaculate work .. go for it.

Not only can decision but exhaust u have plays a lot into a cam performance are cam sound especially M8 is a louvrer lover yea 6000 little over price no doubt and that lefty bearing u listed is the crankcase bearings which SE offers as upgrade for the compensator side which they’ll work both sides but is crankcase

Kinda hard to read that - but I get the gist. ;) $6k is what it is. Your labor costs may vary - especially if you do the work yourself - but the parts are the parts. As I mention in the video - you can do JUST a cam. Of course, you'll need the adjustable pushrods and a few other things like the bearing, etc... that are required when you change one...but you can certainly get a cam done for much less. Just depends on what you're going for. I love this bike and have every intention of keeping it a good while...so performance was important of course but so was longer term reliability. All things to take into consideration.

Fantastic video. I was quoted 4600 for stage 2 upgrade on my 22 RGL through my local Harley Dealership. I was thinking about doing it because I'll retain my ESP coverage... But I dunno man. I think I'll go aftermarket when it's out of warranty after 5 years.

You really should. I rode a friends ST that didn't have the exact same upgrades but was done well and dyno'd by the guy that did mine. It was just a totally different bike. HD makes these bikes run lean from the factory for EPA reasons and I truly believe that if you get someone to do the work that knows their shit and then get it dyno'd by someone equally as good - you'll actually have a better and more reliable bike than stock. I rode mine for about 2500 miles figuring that if I was going to have some crazy engine or tranny problem that was going to get it back to the dealer for warranty work - it would have likely happened by now. I can't even describe how much better the bike runs now and I know the dyno tune is right on the money so I can ride the piss out of it with no worries.

Oh man - it's absolutely insane! Love it so much...totally worth it. It's really pretty interesting when you ride it after a cam upgrade and a really good tune...it's like a completely different bike. Truly the way the Harley was supposed to be from the factory...but the EPA won't allow it... :(
