I'd love to see you do a blind test with this on/off. Also I'd love a null test, probably going to dl the demo just for that. Saw this quote on tjeir site which kinda made me go hmmmmm "Because FiDef is a psychoacoustic process, it may not have any impact if the listener resists its charms. We’re talking full-on Jedi mind tricks, folks."

I can definitely hear the impact of the plugin. To me it works on the depth of the mix.

Hey, Mike. I've been using this since December and it works on every mix, in one way or another. I tried many null tests and it indeeds sounds different at each setting. Can you share your Spotify mixing playlist?

I'm glad you finally review it, great video Mike. I have the plugin since its released. Now, how do i come to instantly buy it? Well, its because im using MAAT EQ Blue (before FiDef becomes a separate plugin) with built in "Exclusive proprietary FiDef®processing" It was love on the first sound :) Cheers!

This is far from subtle and does make quite an incredible difference to the depth, separation, and even emotional interest I had while listening. I need to learn more about what this is doing and how.

It's a little like gullfoss, you can't really control it 100% but it works. Don't really like MAAT as a company though wouldn't wanna give them my money.

I heard it immediately, and yes - it’s very sweet sounding.. But I really worry that its effect may cause listening fatigue in a similar way to how recordings with excessive phase shift causes listening fatigue. Personally I would hesitate to use it on more than one or two sounds at a time, until the long-term reviews start to come in.

Great content as always! It would be interesting to know how it works with different input levels or is that meter there just to show you optimal signal to psychoacoustic noise ratio 🤔
@slamcrank
@slamcrank Год назад
Wasn't familiar with this - and maybe it's my somewhat ASD brain being very sensitive to this sort of thing - but to me, this isn't subtle at all. I hear it very prominently, and I very much liked what the T|HUSH algorithm was doing for the most part. I'm sure it's very program dependent, but this is super interesting. Thanks, Mike!

@sparella
@sparella Год назад
@@yoyoyo243 No it doesn't sound bad at all. In fact it doesn't actually make much sound, so it can't really sound bad. This is like the icing on the icing on the icing on the cake. If there is any other part of the signal chain that could be improved, it's higher value to do that improvement first. After all those improvements are done, then add this to the toolbox if you like it.

In a non-blind comparison, can it be anything other than partially expectation bias, partially confirmation bias, and partially low level signal-correlated crosstalk?

Who was it who did this before - it was about 10, maybe even 15 years ago? Wasn't updated to current formats.
@MikeBrayton
@MikeBrayton Год назад
Most of the time, I can barely hear subtle compression and saturation, and this is another one of those things, for me... I mean, listening here on my laptop, that is... So, I have to fire up the big speakers and take another listen. And this is the great paradox - we may hear it, but does anyone else? And even if they do, do they care? Maybe... but a good song is really all they care about. Anyway, my question is, do you think you could approximate the effect of this plugin using a different process? Say, with a touch more eq, with a bit of saturation in a certain range, maybe using something like a Wavesfactory Spectre or something. I know it's not the same math as this, but would it suffice, for you, now that you know that this exists and what it does? And does this replace the need to do those other things?
@olivermasciarotte464
@olivermasciarotte464 Год назад
Hey Mike, yes you could approximate some of certain Profile’s effects but, in general; no. The closest product to FiDef JENtwo is Airwindows’ Texturize and, after demo’ing that plug-in, you’ll find that Texturize produces a very different result.
@MikeBrayton
@MikeBrayton Год назад
@@olivermasciarotte464 thanks Oliver. For me, this plugin kind of represents the rabbit hole that is the internet. How deep do I want to go? I feel the same way though about most compressors equalizers, DAWs, and most software really. Most of my friends, though, have never accused me of appreciating the subtleties of life. :) But I'll give this a good demo and will likely buy it. Mike White gives a good sales pitch here. My greatest task will then be to try to convince everybody else how great it is.

In my personal experience, (trialing the demo) with maat engaged i feel like the music is more engrossing and i can hear more clearly what is working or what needs work while playing a work in progress. I notice when i switch it off some sort of connection to the music goes away..It's maybe a bit like having a little late night chemical enhancement.. but i digress

I seem to be in the minority but I didn't like it. I actually liked it at first on individual stems, but the more of it there was (i.e. with each additional instance on another stem) the less I liked it, and by the time you were engaging/bypassing on all of them, I didn't like it at all. It felt like something was in the way of hearing the music clearly. I can see how that might be the case if it is introducing focused noise since the buildup eventually got to me. I'll still be curious to follow this line of thinking in the future, but for now I think I'll pass.
@olivermasciarotte464
@olivermasciarotte464 Год назад
Hey man, you might want to try it on whole mixes, rather than stems, as is the case in a typical mastering workflow. Also, we will be adding new Profiles next year which may be just what your particular material is looking for…

@olivermasciarotte464
@olivermasciarotte464 Год назад
Hey P.M., That physicist has be writing audio software for over 40 years. You’ve heard his work in countless albums and movies. I, that marketing director you mention, am an electrical engineer who has worked in audio also for over 40 years. I used to be head of production at Neotek and a staff engineer at Criteria in Miami. For quite a while, I was an indy audio technology consultant for Sony, Philips, Warner Bro.s, Universal, Panasonic, NPR, NASA and too many other clients to list… ;) We at MAAT believe in using our ears and brain as well as science and software. Speakin’ a which, while developing FiDef, FideliQuest retained the world’s only (that I know of) Grammy award-winning neuroscientist. How’s that for bona fides?!
