My Dad was a DJ in my teens while he wad in the US Air Force. He was the entertainment director at Kadena AB (his side job) and booked many famous acts while we were there. This song came out after he retired. He passed away in September. He was really good at finding hits. I remember him telling me about this song and several others that came out around the same time. He always played a variety of music when I was growing up. R&B, Country, Disco, Bluegrass, Rock, Calypso, Regae, Soul, and anything else that was out except gospel music. He was not a religious man in any way. I will miss him and his ear for music. Love you and miss you Dad ❤.

It's 2023 and I love this song as much today as the first time I heard it. I sing it at the top of my lungs every time I hear it. This is what timeless music sounds like.
No black people certainly aren't the only ones with soul but how many records would you want to play over the last 50 years had black artists not been included? There is a certain sound/emotion/soul that black artists are able to convey that very few white artists have, some white artists can turn an urban sound into something completely different and equally compelling ala Sting, Paul Weller, Teena Marie, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan etc who are up there with the best black artists but I don't believe that you can say that white people have the same sound as black people when it comes to making urban music. I also think that mainstream music has gone down the crapper since record labels have excluded urban black musicians and singers from mainstream music.
Another brilliant track written/produced by the dynamic duo of Babyface & L.A Reid during this period. You can tell right away it's their distinctive sound with that classic late 80's drumbeat and great vocal arrangements.
No doubt.. I seem to think that this song was written with the intent The Whispers would record it for their Just Gets Better With Time album.. Budget or something like that made them pass on it. The Mac Band did an excellent job with and I'd have it no other way, but you've gotta admit you could see it being sung by The Whispers!
