IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!! There is now a fix for our Mac Pro 5,1s to be able to upgrade to Big Sur 11.6.
Check out my new video on it. • Mac Pro 5,1 with Big S...
You must first install Martin Lo's Opencore package which is now 0.7.3 (V2). This is the only version of Opnecore that allows you to update to 11.6 any others will corrupt your system drive and possiblt others over time. I have had it running for a few days now and so far its been great. One note is be very patient on the install as it took two or three auto reboots installing 11.6 before it was finished and also it seemed like the installer was stuck, But I just left it alone and finally the progress bar jumped forward. So be patient and don't force shutdown in the middle of the install.
This link has all the Opencore packages for download and links to Martin's videos on youtube.
forums.macrumo...
Be sure to get Opencore 0.7.3 (V2) which is the latest version and at the bottom of the list.

If you need to get 11.2.3 you can download it from here mrmacintosh.com/macos-big-sur-full-installer-database-download-directly-from-apple/ but be sure to use Safari not firefox or chrome, I got an error with firefox but it worked with safari. Its the full installer but will be called InstallAsissistant.pkg make sure to only grab 11.2.3 not a later version. 11.3 will corrupt your drive and possibly brick your 5,1 don't install it it's still not supported with Opencore but they are working on it although it may never be compatible.

Great to see you had such success. I am hesitant to install Big Sur on my 4.1/5.1 even though I am running Mojave with Martin Lo's OpenCore fix. But Big Sur does run great with a Hackintosh with a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt card. Thanks for your video. Maybe I will take the plunge.

Important notes: The latest update of Big Sur 11.3 is not compatible with Mac Pro 5,1 DO NOT UPDATE! 11.2.3 may be the last version to work with the 5,1 due to hardware / software issues. I will update this if things change. Also unless you updated to a new wifi card with bluetooth 4.0 you will not get wifi with the old card, but bluetooth works. Hey man, so I’ve gotten the most recent Martin Lo OpenCore package with the patch for 11.3>. Working great and for those asking, includes the Titan Ridge Thunderbolt driver and that’s working well for me (have an Apollo Twin Quad and 2x Octo satellites). My sessions in PT seem to be working fine, although I’m seeing a huge amount of graphical lag and was wondering if you’ve had that experience? I’ve got 2x 4K screens attached to a Vega 64. Reasonably smooth on Catalina, but pretty much unusable on Big Sur. of course I could use low-res mode, but I don’t wanna… I have a 4.1 > 5,1 with the usual specs.
@MacSoundSolutions
@MacSoundSolutions 2 года назад
Are you using Eucon? The latest version is only for Mac OS 11.4 and up, I had some laggyness with it, but I’m doubt that’s your issue. Are your graphics only laggy in pro tools or all apps? Maybe hardware acceleration is not working for some reason. My graphics with my Rx5700xt are fine no lag, three monitors two at 1080 and main one in 2k. If you are using Eucon run the uninstaller reboot and see if that helps.
@CoresMusic
@CoresMusic 2 года назад
@@MacSoundSolutions I tested it with Logic and that’s as smooth as Catalina. Only PT seems to be showing the lag. I do have EuCon actually. I run 4x Artist Mixes and an Artist Control. So that’s worth trying. I’ll launch PT in low-res mode and see if the lag’s still there. I’ve had issues with 4K monitors and PT before, but not this bad. The Vega 64 should be more than capable of that task… Love the idea of a 5700XT, but graphics cards are just too expensive at the moment!
@MacSoundSolutions
@MacSoundSolutions 2 года назад
@@CoresMusic yeah gpus are crazy expensive I got mine for 350 and returned the first 5700xt cause it was almost 400 I should have kept it and sold it later… I have heard that pro tools does not play well with 4K but 2k seems fine one my system. I would try uninstalling Eucon and see if that changes things.

I saw you had Windows on your boot-picker (3:42)! Which process did you use to achieve this?
@MacSoundSolutions
@MacSoundSolutions 3 года назад
The easiest is to just use a windows machine if you have one you can use and create a new windows boot drive on an SSD. You want it to be a UEFI install not legacy, legacy is what bootcamp uses and does notn work with opencore. So I actually used my older bootcamp windows install to create a new windows 10 install on an SSD . You could also can do this if you don't have a PC you can use. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j24xLcCU8xw.html but if you have a friend with a windows machine its easier to just create a new system drive then stick it in your opencore Mac Pro and it will work. Two important notes is don't install windows in Slot 1 of your drive bays. Put it in 2 3 or 4. Second to boot into windows always shutdown then start the machine and then select your windows drive and shut down again when your done and when you boot up again it will go back to booting into mac OS. Don't use the system start up disk and set it to windows and then restart this can cause problems, and don't restart the mac and then select the windows drive in the bootpicker as you can get stuck in a boot loop. You can restart in windows once you are booted into windows and restart back into windows but when you want to switch OS from mac to Windows and back to Mac always shut down the machine and then boot and select the system you want, do not do a restart and switch systems or you can get stuck in a windows boot repair loop that becomes a real pain in the ass. It took me a while to figure this out. Just use opencore boot picker at boot to select windows after a fresh boot.

I have Mojave installed on my 2010 mac pro, so I did the firmware update with that. Does Opencore prevent Apple from bricking my mac with their firmware updates during a later OS installs? Honestly, I don't mind the risk of messing up a partition on my drive, I just want my hardware left alone at this point. I need to update to a later OS, so hoping Opencore works, otherwise I'd have to install Linux, and Run later Mac OS's with a Qemu KVM, which I'm sure is slower, but leaves my firmware alone. Oh, and one more thing, if your GPU isn't a mac one, will it still see rEFIND bootloader if you booted that way instead of Apples bootloader?
@MacSoundSolutions
@MacSoundSolutions 2 года назад
I am on Big Sur 11.6 also testing Monterey, as long as you don’t have auto update turned on you will not be installing firmware updates or new OS by mistake and there has not been a firmware update since Mojave for the 5,1 Mac Pros. Opencore gives you a bootpicker with non Mac GPUs so no need for rEFIND. But Nvidia cards are no longer supported past Mojave, a RX580 is the recommended GPU for Catalina and up and there are others but you would need to do a power mod for them. Martin Lo’s opencore package is the way to go, it depends on what OS you plan to install to know which version of Opencore to install. You can install opencore on a usb thumb drive to try it out, it doesn’t have to be on the system drive. What Mac OS are you looking to run? And what GPU do you have?

Audio now imports when importing video like it used to. You can install the latest version of Pro Tools on Catalina and bounce to QuickTime is now working but honestly I have not tested that yet but looks like it does and is no longer a beta, they added new codecs to bounce to, but what’s odd is it seems like you have to choose a codec where as before it bounced whatever you imported. I did make a Super Dupa Copy of my hard drive beforehand and booted from it and it work, but for some strange reason my OpenCore Boot Select is not seeing the drive upon boot up now.

@@joshweinstein5843 11.3 is not compatible so if you updated to it you need to revert back to 11.2.3 and stay there until the opencore guys figure a fix but it might not be fixable.

Hi, I downloaded the Big Sur installer but I see it is version 11.4. How (or where) do I get version 11.2.3? Thanks

@@MacSoundSolutions Hi, Many thanks, downloading right now! I have installed Martin Lo's 0.70 package and as far as I can see on my MP 4,1/5,1 with Mojave, it is functioning at least as far as changing the boot rom (now 9144.0.7.0.0) and a PCIe drive that was 'external' is now 'internal', but no Boot Picker screen on my Radeon Sapphire HD 7970. I have a Mac Nvidia GT 120 that I can use. Do I need to do anything else before moving forward with installing Big Sur?

@@paulbailey6251 the boot picker only shows up on one of your video card outputs, most likely a display port, you may need an adapter for your monitor. I have three monitors and it only shows the boot picker on one monitor and the others are black so try a different output on your card with your monitor and you should get the bootpicker when you connect to the correct port.

opencore is a shit anyway..dont understand why people continue using that shitty bootloader,when you can still use clover 5127 for catalina and big sur..specially with legacy bios

hi! my mac pro 5.1 2x 2.26ghz xeon, wont playback o record in protools 2022 (says cpu load, buffer problem), but when I offline (with cpuctl) the second xeon, everyhing works perfectly. What it is going on?

Hard to say, what is your buffer set at? Set it to 512 see if that gets playback working. Check the playback engine and make sure it’s selected on your interface. If nothing works try removing all non Avid plugins to the unused plugins folder and make sure all avid plugins are up to date. If that works move the non avid plugins back into the plugins folder one at a times and test playback etc, one old plug-in can cause issues. But I would set your buffer to a high setting 512 or higher.

@@MacSoundSolutions thanks for answer! It is a clean session with no plugins. The buffer´s size doesnt matters because the error appears instantly when playback o record. With 1024 or 256, the results are the same. Only works when the second xeon is offline using cpuctl command.

@@Rarrorra very odd what interface are you using? I would check to make sure it is silected under hardware options, sometimes that changes to some other thing in the mac os sound prefs.

@@MacSoundSolutions i tried several playback engine (RME, AVID, and Protools Aggregate) For some reason, Internal speaker doesn´t work in the mac. All playback engines had problems with 2 cpu, but works charm with only one cpu. We tried change disk, GPU, memory slots and memory dimms. Any idea? Thanks for your time
