I love my green wing macaw! But if someone tells me they are thinking of buying a macaw I always recommend against it. It is nothing like owning a dog or cat, they are highly difficult, expensive and destructive creatures. They are exotic pets that need a whole habitat, not a cage in your room.

I used to work with a scarlet macaw who liked to tempt people to put their fingers in her cage by rubbing her face sideways along the bars and then as soon as they put their fingers in she would bite them and laugh. Pretty funny actually.

I'd argue they're a toddler with a pair of garden loppers. Adorable, destructive and *loud* One blue and gold I used to work with despised bed times so would fly away to the top of one of the tallest trees in the park, then would just cycle between screeches and "no" when asked to come down, until he was offered a walnut, then he'd come down *eventually*

I think they made a mistake with the actual picture of the jenday conure as well, as I'm pretty sure that is a sun conure. I think the picture labelled love bird is a jenday instead of a sun conure. Jendays have almost completely green wings and less red around their eyes, sun conures have more red around the eyes (like half of the face or more), and only part of the wings are green, usually the ends. This happens frequently as the 2 species are so similar in size and color.

Great video, but for anyone wanting to own a parrot I would suggest watching 'Parrot Confidential', some of which you can find on youtube. It's a documentary that goes through the reality of owning parrots, and some of the places where they end up if people buy them and end up not being able to look after them :( It really sends a strong message that parrots shouldn't be kept as pets, unless they're rescues.

Jessie, it's so wonderful to see how much you respect and revere this species (and so many others!) Parrots are my favorite non-human companions. I have only cared for one, a dear cockatiel named Ruby, and I'm sad to say I didn't do a very good job 😔I did not know enough about healthy parrot diets at the time (20 years ago), and as a result Ruby ate only seeds and didn't live past two years. I will never forgive myself for his early death, and I'd decided never to try to keep another parrot in captivity... until I began watching your channel 3 years ago. You have given me so much new knowledge, confidence, and hope, that I am hoping to one day, soon, begin to think about taking care of a new parrot species! You are the BEST! Thank you for helping me heal and enlightening me--and so many others! ❤️

Stay tuned for next week's video where I've done the lighting, audio, and framing myself, and there's probably going to be one static shot because I don't have a 4k camera at home. I knew macaws ate clay off cliffs (who hasn't seen those awesome pictures of hundreds of brightly-colored birds clinging to the side of a rock face?), but I didn't know that was why. When you think about it, it's kind of amazing. Some time ago, one of them had to have randomly eaten clay, AND realized it didn't get sick, or got less sick after eating unripe fruit. It had to make a connection between 2 time-spaced events. Not only that, but this information was then shared with rest of the flock, and then on to entire species.
@WireMosasaur
@WireMosasaur 4 года назад
I feel like it's more likely to be an instinctual rather than learned behaviour, but it would be fascinating if it was a learned behaviour that was passed down through generations! (certainly the locations of good clay patches are generational group knowledge though). I wonder if there are studies on this particular thing?

I have two Sun Conures and I'm pretty sure that Jenday Conure at 2:30 is actually a Sun Conure. A Jenday should have way more green feathers on it's back and wings, shouldn't it..? ...🤔😅 My parents have two free flight trained blue&gold macaws - and one day me and my sister (who currently has a Galah Cockatoo and an Indian Ringneck) will own them since we're their godmothers - and I agree with everything you've said! 👍 They're awesome, sure, but they really do need the right people to care for them! 🦜💛💚 ⚠️ They're like three year old kids with ADHD... who never grow up and can seriously harm you with their beaks. You need to seriously think about if you really want this and if you're honestly ready for this lifelong commitment! So please, do NEVER impulse buy those kinds of animals (...or any animal, but specifically exotic ones)! 🦜⚠️ There are other ways to learn how to interact with birds and care for them though - like volunteering in a shelter! 👍🐦🐣🐥💚

@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 4 года назад
Macaws are seed consumers and not considered seed dispersers because they don't drop seeds often enough to really replant their habitat like a red footed tortoise would. They aren't considered pollinators either because they don't collect pollen from one flower and transfer to the next. However, there are some nectar eating lorikeets that are definitely pollinators!
