Thank you SO much for this amazingly kind comment 🙏. I apologize for the late response, I'm so sorry. I have a 4 month old daughter and getting back into a full-time work routine with her is sometimes a bit overwhelming so that's why I have been a little absent the last 2 weeks. IF we get some more people in here, maybe in the future I will be able to quit that full time job, which is something I secretly dream off 😆. Thanks again man, I appreciate things like this so much.

Just got this laptop with the exact same specs, mostly use it for music production and light video editing, its a dream, by far best laptop ive ever had. never had a single hiccup on either video editing or music production, also love thge crazy thin form factor and really insane battery

I actually have a background in music production and the reviews I see on this thing are fantastic. I still use a 15" Pro from 2016 for my music production and it runs fine. But I'm sure this Air would kick its ass when getting pushed to the edge. Thanks for sharing your experience, I greatly appreciate it!

The problem with the 15" Air is after upgrading ram and ssd you're at a refurbished 14" pro price from apple or other retailers.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives Год назад
Totally true ! I didn't really know about the refurbished section on the Apple website until a week before my purchase. Maybe because it's hidden so well 😝 At the time, there was only a M1 MacBook Pro available which was slightly reduced in price at around 2070 euros I think. I didn't really wanna go for the M1 though... Of course, a week after I bought this Air an M2 Pro appeared at around 2050 euros which would have been a serious option and probably the better choice for that additional cost. Such is life. But so far, this Air hasn't slowed me down in a way that a Pro wouldn't have so I'm still happy with the bigger screen 😃.

Personally I dislike the XDR display on the pro, unless you're constantly viewing hdr, the colors on all other websites are off and you cannot change the profile in the settings because it's not supported. Plus the keyboard and track pad are horrendous on the pro models

yes, true, but you can also find the MacBook Air with that configuration for less, too... so if $$ are an issue, look refurbished for either config

Nice summary! I just grabbed the same. MBA with 16 gb RAM and 1 TB HD. Previously had a 2017 Intel 3.1 GHz MBP. All I can say is that I'm blown away. Time will tell, but for my needs, (Simple 4K editing) it's been amazing thus far.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 11 месяцев назад
For sure. Didn't go for the 1TB because for that price I could have gotten a 14" Pro and I would prefer the performance over the extra SSD storage if paying extra. In your use case, where you maybe don't really need that extra power ever, I think your configuration is perfect though.
@flexmtb

@@AntonJDCreatives Thanks! I've now edited 5 videos and it's still screaming through it! On your comment about pricing, $1900 for the MBA (my spec) 15" vs $2000 for the MBP 14". The MBP 14" would be the base model. And a 14" screen. I can't edit on anything smaller than a 15" screen 🤣 If going MBP, I'd go 16" with 64GB Ram and never need another computer for 10 years. But that would be $3900 lol. I'm waiting for the M3 chipset release. Then give my wife the MBA and go heavy on an M3 MBP. Thanks for replying!

How it works with 4k ? You need to render or it is smooth straight away ?
@flexmtb
@flexmtb 8 месяцев назад
@@lifecisco9471 4K, 5.3K (go pro) smooth right away. Again, my videos are simple. 1 video track, 1-10 audio tracks, titles peppered here any there. Very few effects in general. Still rips! If you are doing anything heavy, then I would probably steer towards a MBP.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 8 месяцев назад
@@lifecisco9471 Smooth straight away, especially when just editing and snipping clips. Once you start adding effects and color grades on each clip individually it can start to stutter here or there. But that's in optimized/original media. Better performance elongates the smooth experience. This is all in Final Cut Pro X.

Was going back and forth between the 14” Pro and the 15” Air I’ve had the MBA 15” (16gb & 1TB storage) just this week, tested it with basically all the editing software I’d be using (Lightroom, Premiere Pro etc) everything was smooth had no issues it does get a little warm in Lightroom when using AI tools but that’s expected got the MBP 14” and honestly I’m not feeling it, it just feels too small and bulky. Coming from a 2017 13” MBP it’s definitely an upgrade either way just a tip don’t compromise performance but whenever you decide on upgrading your Mac try and get a new experience with something completely different and that is why I think I’ll be going back for the MBA 15” in like a week. So to summarize I know the MBP 14” is more than capable but so is the MBA 15” so I prefer to create a workflow around a device I enjoy using.

Well said, there's just something about the keyboard and track pad that I find more desirable on the air models, perhaps because its designed for students and office workers more. I didn't particularly care for that over on the pros and the screen size I agree with you on. To me it doesn't make sense to upgrade to the bulky 16 inch.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 11 месяцев назад
Definitely agree on buying something new and exciting which makes you want to use it. I glanced at the 14" Pro for a few minutes when I was picking up my MBA and it indeed felt a little small to me. The difference between the 15" and 14" seems bigger than between the 14" and 13", but of course this is just in my head. My palms were a lot less comfortable when typing compared to my MBA. In weight the difference isn't huge but you can definitely feel it when picking them both up. The thing is, you can always go higher and better in terms of performance. Even with the Pro, you have the better (more cores) Pro chip not that far away, then the Max and even the Ultra. They are all just that "little extra" away. But that's the Apple strategy and this time I didn't fall for it. This is already way better than upgraded Pro's from a few years ago so I'm going to roll with it. Thank you for the comment!

It's so refreshing to find someone to review the video editing on a MacBook Air for real people, not just big-time Tech youtubers that shoot in 8k on a RED camera. I've been editing on a M1 8gb Mac Mini with overlays for some time no issues. The pro is overkill for most people. Even professionals, I would say don't necessarily need it.

Thank you for this. All I wanted to know is if the MacBook Air would be okay for video editing because I like the form factor and everyone is just saying “you might as well get the pro.” But I really prefer the size of the 15 inch. Also there are so many pro options now that when I think ok let’s get the base model pro and watch videos about that, they are saying you need at least the middle tier chip, so the price just keeps creeping up.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 10 месяцев назад
Those people that are telling you to get the Pro probably haven't even used the M2 Air yet. They just disregard it because in the past, with the Intel chips, you always needed the Pro model to do anything intensive. An Intel MacBook Air would fry under even the slightest of productivity loads. But with the M silicon chips, the world has just changed and a lot more is possible with a lot less. Go for that Air, I think you won't be disappointed.

Thank you for such an informative video. 'The Internet' says you need the 32gm RAM macbook pro for 4k video editing. I'm glad to learn from what you're saying, that MBA with your specs should be more than enough for editing occasional go pro 4k footage and do daily work in final cut and capcut, editing 1080p vlogging footage. 🙏

Hi Alexander thank you for your kind comment! I'm sorry for my late response... You absolutely do not need a 32GB ram Pro for 4K editing. Even a 8GB Air can do this in my opinion. I do pretty heavy color grades at times using Dehancer (and load an instance on every clip individually) and I still get full res 4K smooth playback. For the use case you describe, this will blast through it with ease, don't worry.

But I am going back and forth between 512GB SSD and 1TB SSD, here in Canada it’s about $225 difference. Now as its been about 5 months, is yours working good. And are you happy with 512GB storage? Please reply, thanks

Hey man sorry for my late response, I've been away for a bit. I've been very pleased with my 15" Air to be honest. I recently got a new job in the creative space and I received a 16" M3 Pro. The difference isn't huge to be honest, so you are making the right decision in going with the Air. 512GB SSD or 1TB SSD have the same write and read speeds as far as I know. So you are really only paying for more memory. I would save that money and buy an external SSD to edit off of. I do that regardless of the memory my computer has. That being said, just for creative use alone and various things you will end up saving on your computer itself, 512GB isn't THAT much. I often need to clean up my hard drive a bit to keep some headspace on the computer. My next computer would be 1TB for sure. But even then you will probably still need an external SSD. So maybe you should go 512GB SSD and buy a 2TB SSD which would still be cheaper than going 1TB SSD and 1TB external SSD.

Pre-ordered the M3 15 inch MacBook Air this week. I’m more in screenwriting but I do edit videos and work with audio. Honestly, I think the Pro with an M3 chip is incredibly unnecessary, especially when the base chips are being used for non-Pro devices. That’s just my opinion though.

Podcast videos normally don't need a lot of effects, color grading or crazy transitions so you should be totally fine with the Air. You probably shoot in REC709 and just cut the footage up I suppose? That's where the Air shines while still being super portable and more affordable. I have both m1 16GB Mac mini and m1 8GB MacBook Air for potable (could have gone with one 16GB MBA and dock it but anyway it happened to be so), so my next upgrade might be m4 or m5 refurbished product. I like the MacBook Air 15 inch in the following points. First of all the 15 inch screen size is really comfortable, coming from 15 inch MacBook Pro 2015 and 13 inch MacBook Air m1, I actually prefer the larger screen, this gives me immersive feelings while working. Secondly, the weight of 15 inch new air is so light, and moving around adds up creativity, while the heavier 16 inch pro is a chunk machine to carry with, especially with iPad and camera. Thirdly, it is very interesting looking at the ppi of the pro series compare to the air, air has the lower ppi, which means if you set them both in 2x resolution, the air will have larger text size, it is easier for your eye. I guess there will still be a lot of time before my purchase, so apple might come up with something interesting, let's see.

@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 7 месяцев назад
Definitely more on the 15% side than the 50%. I read an article online where they had done some advanced testing in creative app usage where the M2 air throttled. The performance drop brought the M2 chip to the same level the M1 chip is at in full performance. So if you're using an M2 air you will ALWAYS be guaranteed M1 air optimal performance, under the heaviest sustained loads. When in full power mode the M2 chip is supposed to be about 20% faster, better than the M1. That would put the performance drop in throttling at around 15-20%. Thanks for your question.

I always laugh at the influencers out there who put down the MBA because it can’t do the same things a Pro Max can. I mean seriously 🙄 Now onto important issues: midnight = fingerprints? chips? do you think it’ll wear faster and look more worn than raw aluminium (aka: silver)?
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives Год назад
For now it has served me well! If my projects get bigger and more complex in the coming years, maybe this will start to give way. But we'll see about that in the future. To be honest, when I first unboxed it, it got covered in fingerprints in like 10 seconds. I thought they would vanish after a couple of seconds and they started to, but halfway they just remained there 🤣. I regretted my decision for a bit there. First couple of days I wiped it down with cleaner regularly. But I have to say, right now it's actually a lot better. Maybe subconsciously I'm more careful when picking this up, but it's actually not bad. The outside is certainly worse than the palm rests. They actually remain quite clean after I type. When connecting MagSafe or usb c I'm a bit more careful than with my previous space grey, because I can imagine it chipping faster. But even the pictures I saw of the chipping were pretty minor and I'm not staring down the side of my computer inspecting the ports that much. Silver will probably hold up better and always looks clean, but where's the thrill in that? 😆 This looks way cooler in my opinion and is a real refreshing look sitting in my house after years of silver and space grey. Go for it!

I think I actually have a pretty good answer for you on this. I've been doing a fair amount of photography for my brother's tailoring business lately. Last week I had to edit a batch of around 70 RAW Fujifilm photos and I had 0 issues. Exporting those 70 photos in 100% full quality probably took like 1 minute. My brother actually also uses an M2 air, however a 13" Space Grey base model (8gb RAM 256gb SSD), and he regularly edits photos as well with no issues. Not batches of 100 photos or more like me, but still. He even does design (pretty complex to be honest) for his website, magazines etc on Photoshop and he says he doesn't notice any slow down or lag. He doesn't care about tech though so he probably doesn't know how much faster 16gb of RAM or faster SSD speeds would feel in his use case. He says he is just fine with his base model so I think you should be too!

If I let Final Cut Pro render files in the background, everything is smooth almost all of the time... Speed ramps, titles, color grades... When I don't render it is still pretty smooth even in optimized/original media, but when stacking effects etc it can become a little choppy. Which is totally normal and to be expected. Like I said, a few years back this performance was considered awesome for the big MB Pro's so.... Apple silicon is real. Thank you for the comment by the way!

@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 11 месяцев назад
I have done some more intense timelines like a travel video with about 30 clips with an instance of Dehancer loaded up on each and everyone of them. Along with titles, film burn transitions, keyframes, color corrections etc... This with H.265 LONGOP 200 Mbps files which aren't that computer friendly. Definitely needed to create proxies in FCPX to have some playback if I wanted Dehancer to have grain, bloom and halation in real time. But I have read that even the Pro's have a difficult time with Dehancer's grain etc. If I bypassed the film effects and just used Dehancer to grade, I had perfect playback. Even in "Better Quality" in FCPX. Temperature wise when editing, this thing doesn't even get hot to be honest so thermal throttling hasn't been an issue so far. I have noticed the heat and CPU-GPU max loads mostly come from exports (both video and photo). This isn't a problem for me. So I think it can handle quite a lot. Pro would be even better though, I know!

Top video, merci. Ben zelf ook fotograaf/videograaf voor allerhande projecten en trouwfeesten. Ik ben al dagen aan het twijfelen tussen de air M3 15, (16gb & 1tb) en de Macbook pro m3 pro met zelfde specs. Scheelt toch 500 euro. Zou laptop zijn voor on the go, co-working, reis en fotostudio werk.

you think a mba 15" 24+512 will be good enough to editing 4k videos and using music programs like sibelius and logic pro? i actually have a mbp 13" 8+256 from late 2016.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 11 месяцев назад
Hi thank you for your question! Coincidentally, I started my creative journey in music and since 2017 I've been making hiphop music (you can find me on Spotify by "Joseph Densa"). I use a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" with 16gb RAM and 256SSD. I used Logic Pro X with a ton of plugins like Ozone to master my songs, Nectar to process my vocals and synth plugins Sylenth and Nexus. I still use it today as it gets me by. When recording tons of vocals and having lots of layers, it will rarely give me a system overload, but not anything major beyond that. This MacBook Air is supposed to be A LOT better at music production than that 15" Pro. I haven't installed Logic Pro on it yet but when my Pro breaks down, I won't hesitate for a second switching to this Air and it will handle all my needs. As for video editing, I just edited a 4K video of about 15 minutes for RU-vid (my breakdown of my Paris travel video I released yesterday) with screen recording, jpegs on top, titles and a color grade consisting of LUTs and Bloom and Halation from Dehancer. Without those last two enabled, I edited the full video in better quality at original media, with full res playback. For me it definitely serves my needs. Tech has gotten so good we are spoiled and persuaded by marketing that we still need the more expensive options, while the "lower" tier models of cameras, computers or phones etc in 2023 are so good they can get you very far. Thanks again!

@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 9 месяцев назад
Hey thank you for your question! Forgive my late response, a 5 month old daughter sometimes pulls you out of any side hustles you have...☺️ Well, as you can see I went for the 15" Air and after 4 months now I still don't regret it. I do videography professionally (I call it professional because I get paid, not because I think I am the guy you should learn from) as a side hustle and I've been getting everything done on this machine. If you are not doing crazy visual edits like you are seeing on instagram and TikTok lately, I think you should be absolutely fine with this one. Cinematography can be real simple if you let the footage speak and you can do heavy color grading with plugins and still get realtime playback on this Air. If you have the spare money, the Pro will probably future proof you a bit more though. Thanks again!

Thank you for your comment and my apologies for the late response! If the video editing is light and you're not planning on expanding this workflow in the future, you will be perfectly fine with 8gb's and you can prioritize the bigger screen. If you want to future proof yourself a bit more, go with the 16gb model and you can always hook it up to a monitor later to have a bigger screen to work off. Thanks again!

Not getting the right suggestion. Please let me know your opinion.. 🤘 Take❤

@AntonJDCreatives 8 месяцев назад
Hey thank you for your question! Do you mean you have the M2 Air with 8gb of RAM? In that case I think you should be fine editing those videos if it's just editing and no major color grades or a bunch of effects/titles. Even the M1 Air should be good enough to pull that off. I've seen the difference in RAM mostly when doing heavy coloring, powergrades in Davinci, a lot of titles etc... For basic editing the difference is, like you said, not that big in my opinion. Please let me know if you have anymore questions, I would love to answer them! Thanks again and consider subscribing for my future videos if you're interested 😉 Thanks!

That is one monstrosity! That's a lot of storage and a lot of power. At that price though, I would consider a Pro with 1TB/512GB storage and 16/18GB RAM. Please can you help a beginner here. I am yoga teacher. I use one setup (frame), one video, 40 min or so, fade in, fade out, little colout grading (brightness mostly) and ad some music in a background an background noise reduction. I normally have 1080p videos but considering going to 2k or maybe 4k in a future. How long does the export on this video lasts? This is important because I have yoga centar in Croatia and on top of my 20+ videos a month of editing, I have 30 more from my yoga teachers. So I need to have quick export. My edit lasts for about 10 min TOPS because I don't have much to do and it's all simple and automatic, but I have a lot of videos to process. Thank you very much for your help because, as you said, 300 euros are a big deal to me and I can not find export speed anywhere. I want Macbook Air, but I am not sure 16gb, 512 ssd M2 15'' will be fast enough. I edit in CapCut. Here is an example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3vcofTIOQ0E.html
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 6 месяцев назад
Firstly I wanna apologize for my (very) late response! I've been off the grid for a bit. If you truly need fast export times and you edit longer videos (like you do those 40 minute videos) you will definitely feel the difference between an Air and a Pro. As a matter of fact, I would even say the majority of the difference is export times. That's where the Air really heats up for extended periods of time where it will eventually throttle. I've been using a 16" M3 Pro I have received at my new job, and it's certainly snappier. For editing you will be fine, but a Pro will really save you time on your exports. What the exact difference will be in your examples is very hard to say. Maybe you already made your decision? If so, I'm curious what you ended up getting and how it's going so far! Thanks again for your comment!

The Apple SSD upgrades are ridiculously expensive, I know. However the RAM on Apple computers is known to be more efficient than windows computers. I'm sure the air is doing well for you now..... Just like the m1 was doing well for you in the beginning. Seems like you should just bite the bullet and buy a more expensive machine instead of having to upgrade every 2 years. The air is very capable but it's weakness is in cooling, And it's inability to run an external display at more than 60 fps for me.. Especially for someone like you that is using this professionally I would just buy a little bit more computer. The 16 inch M3 pro with 18 gb ram and 1tb ssd would probably last you 5-10 years. On the other hand if you're someone that likes to upgrade often I understand buying just enough computer and then swapping again.
@AntonJDCreatives
@AntonJDCreatives 9 месяцев назад
Hey thank you so much for your interactive comment! Well I think this Air will last me 3-4 years no problem. My previous M1 Pro with 8GB RAM pretty quickly became too slow (but at the time I bought that one I had NO money to spare so I bought the cheapest M1). an M3 Pro with the specs you describe would definitely last me that long, but the price tag for me is too much right now. I'd rather spend that extra cash on lighting, audio and other accessories you always keep on having to buy. for my style of videography, this is powerful enough. I don't do crazy visual edits you see online these days. Maybe in the future, but I'd have to be way more experienced taking a shot at something like that and I'm not planning on doing that anytime soon. So far I haven't run into any issues, not even the thermal throttling. The only situation where I can feel it heating up and my CPU/GPU is maxed out is when exporting videos or a couple hundred Lightroom edits. But even then it would take +- 30 mins before you will see a performance drop. Export times will of course always be a little snappier on the Pro's. But I'm chilling with my wife, my dog and 5 month old daughter anyway when doing that so I don't care. Thank you again for taking the time to write a comment!

So let’s get something straight… Video Production is a VERY narrow “pro” job. I work professionally in the wireless RF systems world… designing, commissioning and managing RF environments like in-building Cellular, Wi-Fi, and Public Safety. You really need to start thinking about professional use of PCs and MacBooks in a much broader way so you seem like a regular person instead of an elitist video editor. Professional usage is not just video editing!
