MacBook Pro 14 & 16 Full Review - 1 Month Later!

I think that's the first time I've ever *enjoyed* a mid-roll ad/review. Well done!

Grabbed the base 14 and it's been incredible for my needs in terms of battery life and performance so far.

I hope you channel continues to prosper. I think you do an excellent job!

I know I am getting caught up haha but the 16" m1 Pro is what I want! The ports, screen and silence sells it for me. It's such a weird dilemma but doing audio engineering on this is going to be a dream in a home studio. Also coming from a 15" 2015 I can't go for the 13" air... Just have to save up for the new year and bite the bullet woo! Big Love Tom from a fellow Brit too! Always love the content

Superb video and I didn’t even want to watch it as I had already bought THE 16 inch Max 32GB 1TB. I do 3D work and use After Effects so I’m happy with the decision, and your review seems to mostly support that. Cheers Tom

I ordered the 16” M1Pro with 16gb this morning, I do about 10 hours of video editing a month for my training site with FCP and Camtasia mainly in HD but will move to 4K soon. Hope I made the right decision with not getting more ram 😬 Thanks again!

That little car segment was really good, on par with dedicated car reviewers. I'd say, as electric cars and the car industry is becoming more tech-based, you can add car-related content easily, I would enjoy watching a tech reviewer's perspective (MKBHD's channel has some great car content).

I bought the 16" M1 base. Love it, best laptops you can buy as Tom said.

Thank you for your review Tom. Can you please give us information about External monitor support of M1 Pro/Max. For example; is it possible to use it with 2x monitors, lets say 2x 1440p with 144 hz, via a thunderbolt 4 dock when monitors are plugged to dock.

I just bought the 14" Mac Book Pro M1 base model in Silver. It is more than enough power for my day to day computing needs. A little bit of video editing for me, it works perfect. The screen is beautiful and it is blazing fast !! Love it ! I got a great deal at Best Buy. Was on sale for $1599. Could not pass up the deal !!!

My 16" Macbook pro arrives tomorrow and I can't wait!

Great video! The "16 inch" is identical in size and weight to the mid 2015 mac book pro. The 16 inch has also better air flow/cooling than the 14 inch.

I got both the 14" and the 16" to try out and I gotta say although I expected to love the 16" more due to additional screen real estate, I just find the 14" much more comfortable to use on daily basis, carrying it around from room to room, using it on the couch or in my lap. It's nearly identical power-wise and although the 16" display is very nice, I find it a little too big when it's sitting directly in front of my face.

I prefer the 16 for the screen size. But the 14 is an absolute sleeper.

As always, great stuff. Thumbs up! A question(s): If I get the MacBook Pro 16 with the M1 Pro chip, if I up the RAM from 16GB to 32GB, will that decrease the battery life, or even increase it? Other than cost, is there any downside to doing this? How about upside? I've always been under the impression that the more RAM the better. I don't need the extreme M1 Max performance, and don't want to lose the battery life by going with the Max. I was tentatively planning on the M1 Pro chip, the 32GB RAM and the 1 TB SSD storage (Though still considering a roughly comparable Dell XPS 17 with its beautiful 15" form factor, leaning Apple though). I do wish it had the touch screen, but on that point, can I do with my fingers on the track pad the pinching I can do on a touch screen? Oh, and lastly, do you know roughly when Apple is likely to come out with the 2022 M2 MacBook Pro's and iPhones, is it early 2022 perhaps, or late, another time? Thanks.

Was thinking whether 14" could be better for my use, but you made some hard to argue points in regards to battery life! Regardless of phone, tablet or laptop, I always strive for best possible battery life, all other things considered(good screen, performance, build quality). Now that 16" MBP doesnt seem as large and heavy anymore as it would give me rather considerable battery life improvements, and with that, after all, I dont find my 12.9 M1 iPad Pro large anymore, so I will get used to 16 MBP and enjoy the larger screen as well, that is, IF I decide to get one. However, with this years "M2" Macbook Air and 13/14" Macbook Pro update rumors, I think that if one doesnt need all the crazy raw power of M1 Pro/Max, its reasonable to wait for this years MBA/MBP "M2" upgrades.

Looking at getting a MBP 16, silly question but do Apple upgrade the processors and so on yearly as per pc's? This will be my first Apple computer as I'm over windows .

I got the m1 air ...excellent performance and battery life but miss running Windows on BOOT CAMP...I know the parallels exists but its not the same.

Does having the laptops on charge most of the time, looking to replace my iMac, deleteriously affect the battery life? I've heard the OSX has a way of handling this thereby preventing wear on the battery. And if you were mainly using it for audio production then the base model with, say 32gb rams would be more than enough?

Hi Tom. Thanks for all your work. It would be great to hear/see your thoughts on the best external, high-refresh, 4K monitors to pair with these new MacBooks? Ideally one's that are for creative workflows (photo/video editing - I'm not a gamer) and at an affordable cost (sub £500?). I'm thinking to get the 14" MBP and use a good external display for home (I'm coming from a 27" iMac that died), but there are so many monitors on the market, and most of those rated 'best budget displays' are only 60Hz - but seeing your point on getting a 144Hz display has me pondering. (I did see your very informative video on different types of monitor, thanks).

Really like your review! Anyway I have to say that you didn't mention developers at all. Although such products were meant to be used by lot of developers: front-end, mobile development (which is really power consuming), backend, DevOps and so on. I've seen dozens of reviews but none of them never compared battery life in real development usage during the day and how convenient is it to place such a mobile device as a macbook on your knees while you're on the street or something and so on. I have MBP 16" 2019 on intel i9, oh my, it's getting really hot in summer, I want to see a comparison of such things. Thank you for review anyways.

Tech Chap, which MacBook you'd recommend for a artist like me, who is just drawing? I use Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop MAINLY, hardly any other program, I store my videos on a hard-drive but I barely edit...Should I get a 14' or 16? I am aiming goal for 14' I think that would do enough for me with just that. I got a Wacom One, I need something mobile.

I'm hoping intel 12th gen will provide some good options, but probably unlikely to be close in battery.

Great review. I'm leaning towards a 16" M1 Max with 32GB memory and 2TB storage. It won't move from my desk very often, so weight is no issue for me. I do quite a bit in Premiere Pro and also like to 'play' around with After Effects, as well as PS, AI and Capture One for stills work. I am coming from, which was at the time, a maxed out 27" late 2014 27" iMac ( I upgraded to 32 Gb memory), which is a real dinosaur now I know!! It will certainly be a big leap for me for sure, hence my extra time thinking about it! I was considering keeping my 5K 27" for use as a secondary / primary screen? What do you reckon? Thank you great fun watching your review. Only if you didn't comment on 14 MAX because you haven't tested it. For example, we don't know yet for sure there is some slowing down on the 14" MAX to optimize battery.

What’s the program or benchmark shown at 0:49, with several objects in liquid? Is it a Blender scene?

I would love it if Apple took gaming more serious. I know they have the mobile space pretty much locked up, especially on their eco-system. But how great would it be for Steam and other services to run natively or for the adoption of normal graphics standards like Vulkan. I game a lot and create content for my channel and would only consider the new Macs if their gaming capability got better. Great Video Bro!!

Hello good video Which one would you recommend me, being a video editor and designer? With the macbook pro m1 pro 10 cpu 16 gpu 32 ram I would have enough for my work, I am a video editor, filmmaker, logo designer, I use programs such as final cut pro, premiere, after effects, illustrator, adobe xd, blender for very things basic since I'm learning.

Just got the 14" m1 pro, can't seem to find the wallpaper in the thumbnail, doesn't it come by default in the new macs?

I bought a macbook pro 2020 - the base model, 8GB RAM for my work (mostly admin, remote support). Unfortunately it's a little too slow when I open a few apps (Teams, I'm looking at you!). Just a few apps will start consuming RAM, compressing the VM of open apps or worse, sending it to swap space. It ended up being a bit unresponsive when I needed it to work. So I took the plunge and bought a Macbook pro 14 inch with 16GB RAM and 1TB HD. It really makes all the difference. Even when rebooted and nothing running, it opens stuff faster. And with everything open, it doesn't use all the RAM, and doesn't slow down. It's one of those things where if you drop RAM below a threshold, performance drops off a cliff. I think 8GB isn't enough for people who multitask. Actually I'd go so far as to say that 16GB should be a comfortable minimum.

The LG 38WN95C-W, which I think is what you're using, pairs very well with the 16-inch in my opinion. Perfect video editing workstation. And when I don't have the laptop connected, I just switch it to DisplayPort and have it connected to my PC.

I actually bought the base MacBook Air to temporarily replace my defective 15” intel MBP, but I really fell in love with this little thing. It’s so light, has passive cooling, great screen and is powerful enough for everything I do. I do love the 14/16” screen but it’s so much heavier than the air, which would me decide to leave the laptop at home or not

Telling people that the air is all they need is such a good idea. The middle of the line 16" pro was the perfect choice for me. 1tb was the only thing worth upgrading. The rest is already way more than I'll need.
