Attempt #5: You can see if the general has died by looking at the unit card on the bottom left, and seeing if the curved arrow on the bottom right is there. If you can see the arrow and swap to the portrait of the unit leader, the general is alive, if not the general has died.

An exciting even match that could've gone either way that ended with great suffering for little gain, nothing more for fitting for the diadochi

Great game. Officer is holding a Machaira, or a kopesh. Maybe this falcata look wasn't so exclusive of the Iberians

@heirofcarthage the sword you mentioned at 11:43 looks to me like a Kukri Machete, or at least I’m pretty sure you can use it if you need it for woodwork or bushcraft,basically anything outside, you can chop but you can also do fine work with it like carving figures ( I even made small fine chess pieces out of wood) eventhough a kukri isn’t really small, it can be used like a small carving knife. Hope I could help you out, I’ve been watching your content for years and since I love history I’m really happy to see you back on Rome 2 online battles. It’s great :)

While similar curve the sword is a Kopis. It was most common in Greek Armies as a sidearm. It honestly served as a basis for modern day Falchions and other curved swords but obviously the Gladius won out and became the longsword in the end
@howitzer551
@howitzer551 Год назад
@@chazbrown1139 Some of what you said is right, but I don't think you can draw a straight line from Kopis to Falchions or Gladius to Longsword. There is way too much in between and not everything is an evolution of an earlier invention. Before longswords you have all kinds of Germanic and Scandinavian onehanded iron swords as well as Greek swords of the Byzantine empire that are definitely the successors of Roman weapons but probably the Spatha not the Gladius. Even with all that you still have a ton of other evolutions of things like arming swords and a lot of time passes before a longsword ever get made, maybe it is a descendant of the Gladius but that is not a clear-cut thing. The Kopis is even harder as it was much more region wide and spanned many cultures. The gladius got everywhere because the Romans brought it to those places, but the Kopis spread on its own. Heir even calls it a Falcata which is more of a modern term. It is just a Kopis that was made in Iberia (Spain), but besides style of things like handle and decoration it is the same. The Kopis had spread all over the Mediterranean and black sea so it's hard to say what it influenced. Though some say while not a direct descendant the Ottoman Yatagan was at least inspired by the Kopis, but I don't know you could prove that.
@chazbrown1139
@chazbrown1139 Год назад
@@howitzer551 I can see where youre coming from and yes many Longswords were modeled after Nordic examples due to their efficacy in raids and prolonged battles. I slightly disagree on the fact that some cultures copied the Kopis because many knives and swords have been found in archaeological digs that were of similar shape but dated back to before greek colonies were in the area. (Example would be the Lusitani area or Galicia.) Even in India before Alexander there was curved swords. But yes, weaponry dating and historical guidance is hard because many specimens dont survive the long march of time.

Speaking of Pikemen, I will NEVER understand who though it was a good idea in Rome 2 for Pikemen to NOT HOLD THEIR F@#$ING PIKES unless you put them in pike wall! Unless you look at their unit banner or stat card, you would think they are just Sword troops till they go into Pike Phalanx.

@BOSIE321

@heir Yes, on campaign mode the Macedonians are a great faction but i guess on multiplayer they suck. I still think CA should consult the fans on what they want to see with the Pike phalanx because it could be a really interesting unit to deploy but the problem is always a balance issue. IMO if they ever do another Rome game pike units should have a good missile block defence (apparently they did in real life), take HUGE attack and defence penalties on uneven terrain and have a march forward option that could be exploited by opponents sacrificing weaker units to lure parts of the phalanx forward and then pouncing on the exposed flanks.
@BOSIE321
@BOSIE321 Год назад
And a defensive pike unit on a hold formation should be almost invincible to all but the most elite units of the game.

The sword is a kopis I believe, which were used by the Greeks. The only difference to my knowledge was that the kopis swords were typically longer than the falcata.

Falcata are sharpened on both sides for about the front third of the blade, while the kopis is only single edged. Both come in various lengths, but they're certainly all awesome swords!
@TheVoracity
@TheVoracity Год назад
@@j.r.morrel628 Ah, I hadn't meant to imply that either was a set size. Just more a general idea that kopis overall sizes were larger than Falcata. Like falcata were 20-60cm where as kopis where between something like 40-70cm. I did not know that the falcata was sharpened on both sides however which is quite interesting. I imagine it helped a bit more when the wielder was forced to thrust/stab. Very interesting!
