I too think it's a matter of preference and what you need to do. Maceman are fast, relatively strong and can also dig. Also I think they are the superior choice for early game rushing in the Crusader campaign, if you aren't breaking the game by placing houses where the AI puts their military buildings. Assassins can let your siege boys in, and also let you take over a castle to use it's towers like they are yours now. Also superior for sabotage tasks. But sometimes they refuse to climb where you want them to and go for the gatehouse instead. Moats are their bane of existence though. And they can also just randomly stop, instead of going where you told them to.
@Gamer_Gangster7 It really is down to preference, when you can also use Siege Towers or Battering Rams against moatless castles. Either way, if your opponent has moats, you can't just spam 1 unit, you need other units to complement them. It's either Macemen + Siege Equipment, or Assassins + Slaves, assuming all other annoyances are taken care of. Or you can just have some fun with fire throwers on their wall xd (Sometimes you don't even need melee units in that case, cuz the lord can just go down and get burnt, albeit slower than other units catch fire) And I think that's the beauty of SHC, that you can't just spam 1 thing and expect it to work every single time. Even horse archers are bound by this rule. Especially if your opponent has mangonels. Now Horse Arches + Shields are a different story xd.
Yeah this and yes I observe where AIs put their buidings and them block them all because I wanted to finish the trails with lowest years possible and I succeeded at it.. the assassins are very annoying to use, the only good is they are cheap which works great with stingy 2000 starting gold which was very often in the first trail and can climb walls.. which they do way too much because they will literally rather climb the wall than walk one extra tile around it and they will climb your own open gates... they love climbing so much they do lots of pointless climbing... so if you have enough starting gold just block off a part of the wall and use macemen... assassins are so annoying because they really like to stop and just stand near rather than kill the lord and sometimes even if I click like 50 times they like to attack one at a time especially with frederick and wazir also they climb the wazirs castle in the "buttcrack" where he has fire throwers.. no matter which side you come from they go for that wall... they are so dumb
I love mace men for their speed. I always have a group of 5/10 as my rampage/ harass enemy eco in early games. Kind of like cheap knights regarding speed and ability to destroy stuff quickly. Always keep some assassins in army too. Great for sneaky sabotage and getting a gatehouse open for your armored swordsman/pokes after you’ve mopped up most of the defense around it. Or you could just build 10+ catapaults to do the job haha. I like different styles depending on my mood.
2:30 regarding the problems you encountered last time, if it was about actually getting to install the balance patch, its been made super-easy with a custom installer. Its basically as simple as double clicking a program, and it installs and (and if theres some changes to the balance, updates!) the balance patch mod for your game! (As long as your antivirus is not paranoid and isnt putting it in quarantine ofc)
Yeah it was super simple, but my installer got stuck though because I was using custom AIVs. And once we figured that out gameranger italic thing happened and so on!
One of the missions in the crusader trail required getting rid of one enemy lord fast before he builds up defences to make the mission much easier. I used macemen first to take out barracks so he couldn't make more units and then destroyed a tower and beelined for the lord. Macemen failed. Then I tried the same with assassins. Due to their lower cost I could make more of them and they did succeed. I almost always do assassins now
Macemen only 20g, but you invest some gold on buildings and time. Very dangerous in large density stacked on eachother. Still The assassins win. Scaling walls and invisibility is too good. Even with a moat with walls, anti-assassin walls and checking on map with cathedral to find them, they still over power most units in 10 min rush or less.
You may also consider sell cost of weapons, if you're making them. But making those weapons is an opportunity cost for other economic gains. There's also a point to consider if you have more gold than population.| 1 assassin beats 1 maceman, but 50 macemen beat 50 assassins, because of movespeed and stacking. Though, you can move up to 50 assassins fast by flagging them from the mercenary post. You won't see a lot of macemen use in competitive play because of the inhibitive cost.
I usually used them as a fast unit not a strong units like caliph and or other lords the mace man can be fast which can escape from caliphs fire it is actually a pretty good with this They good at avoiding fires
assassins are best they have unique ability of disapearance. they are best to bring down enemy buildings. they have no alternative. Trebuchet and assassin are on the top in my favourite troops and siege devices.
Maceman best assault troops combined with pikeman (tank with speed) also best with archers as it has high movement speed these are only my troops nothing else well maybe monks as optional🤭
Macemen are the cheaper alternative to Swordsmen. You can use them to fill up the brunt of your army. They're fast, have decent armour and they do good damage.
the swordmen are too slow and macemen are honestly badass meanwhile assassins are dumb so will pointlessly climb your own gate house and theres great chance they wont obey and actually kill the lord.. they just stand there especially annoying to use with frederick castles and wazir where they literally ALWAYS go into the death tunnel in his buttcrack where he has firethrowers
The Thing about Stronghold Crusader is: 1. There's no "useless" units at all 2. Macemen "THE" best in SC Extreme for rushing AI 3. Assassins can do better in SC Original at first maps of campaign 4. Both of them make a good combo in attack or defence. Anyway, if I had to choose between this two I'll pick up An Elite Squad of Crossbowmen just to be sure about my Castle :D
No one uses macemen that costs 102 gold each, that's ridiculous. I mean, I guess you could buy a few like that if you have 10,000 gold or something but it's still very inefficient. They are only 45 gold each if you make the maces and just buy the armor. You should also do this with crossbow men, make the crossbows and buy the armor. It's very cheap and efficient and you won't waste oasis on dairy farms. Macemen Pros: 1. Cheaper. 2. Speed - just behind horse units in speed. 3. Armored - more resistant to archers. 4. Stack quicker 5. Great for early harassment 6. Easily micro manageable to dodge arrows Obviously there's indirect pros that stem from these main pros like their speed allowing you to rush to your crossbow men getting closed in on from pikemen, other macemen or what have you. Everyone already knows the pros of the Assassins. 1. Quick buy - Mercenaries 2. Still decently fast 3. Very high damage 4.Camo/Invisibility at distance 5.Wall scaling and gatehouse control. 6. Good early defensive troops in a pinch when you're being rushed. Personally, I prefer the macemen in most scenarios because I just can't stand the horrible pathing of Assassins.
yes, assassins are nice and easy to take out an AI in the early stage of the game but man, they are so annoying to play against, especially Wizar's assassins.
assasins are dumb and annoying for attacking too especially with wazir where they literally ALWAYS go into the death tunnel in his buttcrack where he has firethrowers of course they also don't like to obey either and not go where you want them they literally stop and stand next to the lord at best and at worst they refuse to enter the keep.. you can click all you want but they still don't enter more than one at a time especially if its frederick.. thanks to that I lost enough time because he killed all of them, so I just restarted only to have it happen again
I use Mace men as my main attack forces Using about 200 mace men and 1 siege tower or 5 catapults really doesn't give your opponent much of a choice but to die in a minute However assassins die so fast and are usually exposed to the enemy.. Honestly I only use them to open gates or kill the rat :P
Macemen are probably superior if I'm being honest it matters more depending on what your doing. I have developed a strategy where I send about 25 pikemen who are basically the toughest and best unit aside from knights or portable shields. And then I'll send 50 or so macemen after the pikemen have taken the blunt of the archer fire. Which if you've played this game for two decades like I have you'd know the second you send in anything like swordsmen for example despite their toughness probably are the most useless in the entire game. I only say this because stronghold crusader is my all time favorite game ever made it is the same age as me being made in 1997 like I was I literally played the game since I was like 6 years old and I thought it was tough back then but I realize that the game wasn't actually all that tough it was just me who wasnt tough I was just a young lad. If Stronghold Crusader has done anything for me was that it showed me that I was going to have to think outside the box and give my best.
i would love to see this multiplayer guide. since i never really got into it. my only multi-experience was i randomly got in a game with a stranger and he always yelled at me to turn up the gamespeed to max tho the game jsut started and then he overrun me within 2 mins. i wonder if there is a section for "noobs" ?
Assassins are just way too versatile. They are very strong, can become invisible, can scale walls without any aid and even take control of enemy gates. Macemen are very good too.
Well using Maceman on Crusaders will confirm u how op Maceman are to rush aganist other lords, lmao none will even have the chances to insert a complete wall and when u think u run out of gold.... lord dies and u get with a huge amount of it so u can continue spamming
