When buying a game my decision is heavily influenced by whether or not you've done a video on how it's played! I know it may be a lot of work but it's greatly appreciated by me and my family. Thank you!
It's amazing that you always respond to comments even on seven year old videos! Really shows how much love and effort is put into this channel! Btw great video. Such high quality even back in 2014 :)
Hi, I have a question. Let's say I have all 3 different purple cards and I roll 6, all 3 cards are activated or do I have to choose which is activated?
Old game, but just getting into the hobby. Got a question: If on the starting round you roll a 6. Do you get to dive them? Like 6 times 1, or 3 times 2? Or you just lose the roll? Asuming the second. Thanx Nice explanation of the game, planning on getting it.
So I was just curious if you made a video on this game. (It seems like you've covered every game already) Turns out... I've been playing this game COMPLETELY wrong XD At home, we play with a field of 12 cards (for construction) and a pile. When you buy one of the cards, you refill the 12 and the next player can do their turn. It takes more luck to get the build you are aiming for... Even though I absolutely HATE luck-based games, this makes the game a bit more worth it for me. The official rules seem a bit easy to be honest...? What's your opinion on this? And btw: do you have any tips on extending gameplay? (We're always finished in less than half an hour) Sorry for this long and probably confusing comment 😅 LOVE your tutorials btw. I watch them to decide wether I'm going to buy a game or not. Thanks for your work!
I avoid weighing in on game play preferences. What I like and what someone else likes might be different - but the great thing about a board game, is that once you own it, you can play it however you like :)
hey! just bought the game and love it. Just wanted to make sure its legal to stack the cheese factory with the ranch's to get massive payouts. I actually built three landmarks in one turn that way, winning the game.
Nice to see the finished version of this game. I watched your Come and Play video where you previewed this one and thought it looked like lots of fun. Thank you very much for taking the time to show us this one and I look forward to seeing many more wonderful games in the months to come.
if you roll a 3 (and you have a cafe)when you have the shopping mall activated, would you take a 2 coins from the opposite player or 1 from the opposing player (as the cafe says) and one from the bank, or two from the opposing player?
+meliagabrielle This question is a little tricky to answer, as I think there may be some rules issues in the wording. If 'you' roll a 3, you don't activate your own cafe's. Your Cafe's only give 'you' money, when a 3 is rolled by 'someone else'. The shopping Mall boosts the effect of your Cafe's, so if an opponent rolls a 3, and you have a Cafe, you take 2 coins from that opponent.
Thank you so much for this how-to-play video and the following play-through videos. I was somewhat on the fence about buying this even after all the great reviews, primarily because I would have to get the original Japanese version, and my Japanese is not very good. But these videos showed that it was an excellent and I snapped up the base game and the two expansions. What's more, almost everyone I've introduced the game to is taken with it, and it's a popular choice with the folks I play with.
Just bought this game blind as a gift for my mom. It was either that or a Ticket to Ride expansion. While TtR would be the safe option, I wanted to try something new, and I think she'll like it based on this video. The version I bought was the 5th Anniversary Edition, which has some nice large dice and plastic coins. The rule book also has Hybrid Supply and Variable Supply variants. Not sure if yours has those versions listed.
+Watch It Played OK good to know :) I really enjoy your videos, just bought Machi Koro based on your review and gameplay. Thanks for the great explanations!
Hey Rodney. How do you play red cards with Shopping Malls active? For example I roll a 3 and an opponent has 2 cafes and a shopping mall built. Do I pay that player 4 coins (2 per cafe) or just 2 coins and he/she gets from the bank?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
I love, love, love this game. Managed to play a demo copy a few months back and fell in love with it. I bugged the folks at IDW at GenCon about the contests/give aways they were having... Alas no dice. Nice work Rodney!
I truly enjoy your format. I like how your instructional videos waste little time explaining the important points. So many youtube reviewers spend 30+ minutes explaining gameplay that can be done in ten. You rock!
wathching this reminds thay you can't judge a book by it's cover, likewise, you can't judge a board game by it's title. The games title along put me off a little, because is sounded nothing like city building to me. Now that I watched the video, I looks like a neat game.
Thank you for doing these videos! They are incredibly helpful for people like me who have trouble learning how to play a game based off of the instruction booklet!
This was great! I'm an old school game person and have a tough time with new games where collecting and combining is necessary. You made how it's done crystal clear. You have a new subscriber.
I had a woman at my church say that her young son got it for Christmas and she was confused. I said I would look for a how-to video and hoped you would have it! Now I can send her this link. Thank you, as usual, for being so clear and thorough. I also really appreciate your smile and cheerfulness as you explain!!
it introduces a mechanic that sort of sets a 'cool down' on certain buildings and such. It's not a bad expansion, but it's just not as game changing (in a good way) as the 1st expansion :)
I think this will be a good alternative to Monopoly for my family! I just wish there was a little more investing in your own property but it still looks really good!
Rodney, have you had or heard of the issue of the low value cards winning out too quickly? I don't know if we had a rules goof, but going for the higher value cards/engine would lose b/c the small value strategy would get the 4 objectives too quickly. Peace
Question, when activating the shopping mall(where your cafes get an extra coin) let's say I have 3 red cafe cards, and my opponent rolls a 3, do I get 6 coins, from him because it's +1 for each of my cafe cards?
You still have to roll dice, but if you roll dice and get the 2 or 3 side which would activate your Bakeries, then your Bakeries would each give you an extra coin because of your Shopping Mall.
Hey Rodney. Another great explanation! This game looks so colorful and fun. Quick question. Is the setup always the same? If so, do you find there are enough viable strategies or "luck of the dice" to keep the game interesting on each play? Thanks.
I really liked your video Rodney; I wasn't really interested in Machi Koro... but now, I actually think it could be a winner. Really look'n forward to the play thru; keep up the awesome work!
It's a bit late, but anyway: Wouldn't it be more fair if each player had the same number of turns? Thus when someone completed all 4 landmarks, all other players (if they are not a first player) get additional turn - last chance to finish their own landmarks. And then, if they do - whoever has the most coins wins. In this case the first player will still have an advantage (he gets to place his properties first, so he starts collecting coins earlier), but not that huge of advantage.
But how do you play the game?? This makes no sense. We’ve read the directions many times, three of us, we watched your video and we still don’t understand. Wahhhh. We haven’t given up just yet...
I noticed you had multiple establishments that had the same number. Like a 3. If I rolled a three, do both cards trigger? Or do I choose one? Thanks in advance!
Great tutorial! Got this game for months now but the instructions that comrs with it is too vague. I have one question: If I flipped the Radio Tower earlier in the game and have a chance to use it, do I get to re-roll the dice after I have, say, bought a ranch, which then gives me sort of two turns during said turn, or am I only able to re-roll if my dice does not affect anyone, myself included? I hope my question made sense.
Hey Michelle, while I do my best to answer all rules questions on my videos, I avoid getting into specific card effects and interactions - it's just a bit too much for me to manage, with all the games I feature. You may want to check with the publisher directly, or check BoardGameGeek to see if there is an answer in the game's forums there.
Hey, when i completed the shopping mall each if your staff which means that have this an this symbol will earn an additional one point "per turn" or just once? Tanks!!!
Hey, Rodney's back. And here I thought all the awesomeness of Gen Con this year had killed him. :p I have been waiting on this game. Though as sad as it is to admit, while the game itself seems cool, I am particularly interested in the play mat. It definitely seems to add something to the game.
I've only played this once, with two players, and it seemed like best strategy is to buy a bunch of the 1-6 buildings and only ever roll one die, otherwise you're spreading yourself too thin. Is that the general idea, or is it different with more people?
I have heard people suggest there are certain collections of buildings that work better, but I think the expansions address this, by having a constantly changing group of buildings to buy from (ie, you don't have the same options each time).
Can you buy more than one establishment on your turn? And regarding the business center, you can chose ANY of your openers establishments-minus purple-of your opponents?
Hey Jeremy, you'll find the answer to your first question at 4:14. I'm not quite clear on your second question, could you double check what you wrote and see if there's a way to make that a little clearer?
I have a quick question. I've bought machi koro, but I didn't have all the cards shown. I exchanged that one for another, and again all the cards aren't there?
+tOugE100 Are you perhaps buying the expansions for the game and not the base game? The regular game will have the same box and shape as what shows in our intro.
Excited to finally watch a series before it is finished. Same with my kids. Also, did I notice a change in the cards. Did they change that first goal from rolling 2 dice to rolling 1 or 2 dice?
When you unlock the shopping mall and you receive one coin for ever coffee cup and toast establishment. Does that only happen once, on your turn each round or when that specific number of dice is rolled by any player?
The shopping mall gives you 1 extra coin anytime you would collect money for coffee or toast. So this doesn't happen when you buy it, but instead anytime you would collect for one of those types of symbols. And it only gives you the +1 coin for each of those symbols that you would be collecting money for already on that turn.
Thanks for the video! I’ve played it, but was unsure of whether all your purple cards went into effect when you rolled a six. Would that not totally bankrupt other players?
Hi, since I live in Germany I have the german version with rules in German and one thing is not clear to me : a- is there a limit for Establishment cards of the same type a player can get ? Es. can a player get 6 Bakery Cards? Thanks a lot!
Thanks so much for your great video. It's so much clearer than the instruction book. I have just got the Bright Lights, Big City edition, so it's easily adapted. I play it with a game club where I teach, so putting on the video is the simplest way to show everyone how to play.
Question about one of the rules: when it says there is an activation order: red, blue, then purple, does that mean you can use all those colors for one roll, just in that order? Or does it mean you activate red the first time you get that number, then in a different turn, if you roll that same number you can then use blue next, ect?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you for always answering! I appriciate that! Sometimes we can see so many great games, is difficult to choose, specially for a beginner. I will check some more videos. Thank you for your great channel! I love the videos!
thanks!!! Didn't really know what to make of this game, but I enjoyed figuring it out. think I'll put this one on my "to buy list".... you really have upgraded the "hobby" by explaining and playing games that are sometimes sooooo complicated and chaotic that the casual gamer might be put off... thanks again.
Rodney, we have played the game now 5 times or so and have really enjoyed it. However, are we the only ones that are realizing that whoever is able to activate the Shopping Mall first typically wins? The winner of the last game was able to activate the shopping mall first, then the next two landmarks without even needing to roll two dice with an activated Train Station. All he had to do to win the next turn was turn was to activate his Train Station with only 4 coins. It seems like we are missing something that will allow the game to last at least long enough for the higher (7-12) buildings to be built. And there seems to be no way to slow an opponent down except for the luck of the dice and if you build the Business Center. Thoughts?
I've found that specific strategies do tend to work better, but then I found a variant of the game that I tend to favor. Its called the 8,9,or 10 card variant. Basically you play the game like the Harbor expansion says to do. 8 establishment card piles for 2 players, 9 card piles for 3 and 10 for 4. You shuffle all the establishments together and separate them into their 10 different piles. I would recommend watching a video about the harbor expansion. It explains it a bit better then I can. Hope that helps!
