Nice video on the shaper keyway cutting . I always wondered if I was setting mine up right for keyway cutting .Now I can see someone else do it. And we are both doing the same way by centering the cutter to the hole by touching the surface Thanks
New to owning a shaper (Klopp 450) and watching every YT creator that shares work done on them. Restoration in progress Dec 2021 at Christmas, and plans are to wrap up in the spring of 22 (@@)!. Great vis and thx for sharing,,Bear in TX.

Really nice! Whatever excuse you have to put some video (if you have time) on the shaper working, is well appreciated. An old tool that still has plenty of use in today's computer controlled world.
Thanks for uploading this Stefan! I have a job just like this coming up! I have a restored 1950's South Bend 7" shaper. I will try your method out with a scrap/dummy to make sure I can do it (I haven't run the shaper ever before!).
Glad it helped you! :) Using a dummy part is always a good thing, I do it on a regular basis, sometimes in a cheap and easy to machine material, just to see if the setup works at all.

I have an angle plate I use for this work.It has a milled slot in it with precision pin holes going down from the slot like an inverted vee at 45 degrees.I center the slot cutter in the slot, and put appropriate pinsin the holes to centralize parts of various sizes.A couple of c clamps to hold the part and go to town.Thanks for the video.kap
every time I try to do a job like this on the shaper I find the tool steel gets dull very quickly and then makes a very rough cut ....the reason being I have put the extra pin in to stop the clapper and tool steel does not like being dragged backwards..........and I mean real quickly like three strokes and it is RS......any suggestions
Stefan: Thanks for posting your video, It's very instructive and detailed. I would like to build something similar. I have one question; When the tool bit holder is installed at 5 degrees into the Z axis block, is the TOOL BIT at 90 degrees to the work or 95 degrees to the work? In other words, at what angle did you drill the hole holding the tool bit. I hope my questions makes some sense. Best Regards: Larry

hi I want to cut internal features like this on a mild steel using shaper. I want to cut internal gear sometimes. I have some HSS bars of probably M2. Will it be hard enough? Will it not need a regrind every tooth of gear? What grade is this high speed steel?(M2, M35, M42, etc.) Thank you.
Any HSS will be fine for shaper-use, the higher cobalt alloys might even be to brittle. I had that problem with some HssCo12 tools (I think thats M42).
I see. I never expected the brittleness and you saved me. I'm building feelings and experiences on my HSS bars with a manual milling machine before I start some shaper works. Thank you a lot!

Tomi Eiren It is! :) Nick asked me three times if I want to buy it - Two times I said no because of space issues in the shop, the third time I still had no space in the shop but i bought it anyway :)
Patrick Gurdebeke When doing keyways the clapper box can ruin your day - When it swings up on the return stroke the tool can hit the backside of the bore - And then it can get messy...also the rigid holder is... more rigid :)
That really is alot of work and effort to put a keyway in. Bolting gear to a vise or table, go in with the vertical mill, dive an end-mill straight center, call it done. Have a radius at the top of it, instead of a square - but it really doesn't matter since the key will stop at the radius bend.
