Machining a set of Golden DDR4 Heatsinks | Full Montage

Hey everybody! Sorry it's been so long since the last proper video. I've just been so incredibly stacked lately that I haven't had the time to get back into the filming and editing rhythm.
In the meantime though, this is my entry into the Thermaltake RAM Mod Invitational 2022 Season 1 competition!
The aim was to mod a set of TT ToughRAM XG RGB memory, I'm representing the UK in this event. I was incredibly pushed for time with this one as the world's become a bit of a complicated place these few months. With that said, it was great flexing the M8 on a longer run time job, the main engraving alone here took over 13 hours!
The heatspreaders are made from solid brass, the golden set was left raw and will oxidise slowly over time to become a deep golden colour. The darker set was cold blued and then rubbed down with a 4k grit pad to achieve this lovely bronzed appearance.

Classic manufacturing problem. I am sure he has a bunch of work for his new CNC machine and in the machining world most of the coolest work is locked behind a NDA, so a lot of times there is just nothing that is allowed to be filmed.

As an architect and hobbyist maker I'm somewhat jealous of the relative instant gratification that would come from projects like this. I know it takes more hours than I know to design, plan, and execute a project like this but compared to a project that can go on for years where it can start to feel like a slog to get to the finish product this level of quality control and freedom of expression just seems so great. If I ever won the lotto I could for sure see myself buying a small house in the country with a big shop and spending my days making beautiful things for people and myself. Love the work, very inspiring, thank you.

What is the bit made of that does the polishing/facing pass? Is it a high speed brush? Or is it a very fine facing tool of some sort?
@PraetexDesign
@PraetexDesign 2 года назад
That's a monocrystalline diamond face mill. It takes off only 0.02mm as a pass and leaves the surface like a mirror, tricky to use though as it needs careful preparation before hand.

Absolutely fabulous! Keep up the amazing content. Could not help but notice the multiples of fives, any reason behind that? Now I really want to get going making my own heatsinks... Should I use "sheet", "extruded" or "cast" aluminium?
@PraetexDesign
@PraetexDesign 2 года назад
I made spares in case anything went wrong or I didn’t like a finish etc. Was paranoid that I would mess one up and then forever have a wonky set 😅 It’ll depend on your processes really, cast is easy to machine but often sucks for anodising thanks to added silica. Extruded ones tend to anodise well but you need to grab a good temper else they can warp on you from internal stress. Sheet can be bent, but is super stressed.

Hi Alex, Can I ask how you're getting along with the M8Cube? I know your model is pretty tricked out with the tool assist Etc. but were my eyes playing tricks on me or did I see a VOSS water bottle attached to the side of the spindle during one of the tool changes? Have you been modding the Datron itself?
@PraetexDesign
@PraetexDesign 2 года назад
I love the machine, for the work I do it’s been incredible. It has some major limitations, roughing large amounts of stock or harder materials are a real challenge, but that comes with the territory. Funnily enough the boss bottle is a temporary secondary coolant system. The machine normally runs ethanol, which is a no go for acrylic. I have a second proper tank being installed, but for the time being I was using that mist system for acrylic work.
@temptt3487
@temptt3487 2 года назад
@@PraetexDesign That's interesting your comments on the M8 limitations re roughing large volumes and harder materials. I've been looking into an 3KW M8 myself and whilst there's a great deal to like about it, I do still have some major concerns re its limitation as well. Can I ask if you looked into the MX which comes with either a 4kw or 8kw spindle - I'm thinking an MXCube 4kw would give me a better material removal rate for roughing but still enable the very good surface finish, engraving, texturing Etc. I'd be doing about 70% aluminium, 20% brass, 10% plastic - I'm just wondering if you were buying again today, would you still go Datron? and if so would you go M8 or MX?
@PraetexDesign
@PraetexDesign 2 года назад
@@temptt3487 I think if I were to do it again, I would go for either an M10 Pro or an MLCube. The M10 Pro is simply a better machine, although truthfully it’s pretty marginal, the MLCube has a much larger cutting area which would be nice. Personally I don’t really see the point much in the MXCube. It’s a whole lot more expensive for not a lot of meaningful benefit IMO. It’s only really worth getting for the 8kW spindle, but that seemingly comes with its own headaches. For the work I do right now, a Datron is largely unparalleled. The vacuum system for plate work is just incredible, in plastics the 3kW spindle isn’t a limiting factor at all. That said, I always intended this machine to be joined by others that fill in the gaps.
