This video goes to show that two heads are truly better than one. Nice job breathing life into that purple board, Glen! I hope to get my incomplete IIsi together and working soon. My biggest issue is trying to get even a broken PSU to rehab.

I'm not familiar with the IIsi but if you have a pinout you can maybe power it off an ATX psu? Might need to make a custom cable to do it though 🤔

Awesome troubleshooting! I learned a lot about reset/clock testing. Thanks much!

Glad to hear it was helpful. Always check the schematics though, reset is typically low to high but not always. Typically I find if a clock is pulsing then its normally good although when I get my new scope it'll be easier to confirm that.

loved the vid Glen. The SE30 is on my 'Must collect' list.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I'll hopefully get the chance to build my own board soon. Just need to find a rom simm socket.

I stopped using PLCC sockets on all my reloaded boards I have done. Always some issue with them and the chips. Now, I rarely have issues with the SE30s. Great video.

Great job, Glen! What a feeling when it finally powers on! I rehabbed an Apple IIe once as well and it was very satisfying to hear the beep. Now if I could only get my IIgs ROM3 working lol

It is a great feeling when they do finally come to life. Good luck with the IIgs, let me know how you get on with it.

Bravo. I repair a lot of SE/30s and actually have a newly built board that's being dumb. It doesn't chime, but it NMIs. I have another one that continually death chimes if you press reset, otherwise dead...fun! Just fixed two mac portables.
@CRG
@CRG Год назад
Thanks. Unfortunately I don't really know enough on these to be able to help but the fact that it NMIs then it must be reading something from rom. Good luck with them though, I hope you get them working.

I'm suspecting a Japanese origin for "Simasimac", based on the Japanese word "shima-shima" (しましま), meaning "striped". (In Kunrei romanization it's "simasima" - and portmanteauing it with "Mac" would make perfect sense.)

Cool, I didn't know that but it makes sense.

Yay, the SE/30! My favourite of the old school M68K Macs, as it was the machine that would often accompany the legendary E-mu Systems Emulator II sampler.

Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully I can get my own board built soon. I think it'd be interesting to put it head to head against the IIci since they are both 030 machines.

@@CRG I am not surprised. It was really a hard slog, but I think you cracked it when you resoldered all the sockets. It looks like it was really a cold solder. Especially when you push a chip down and sth changes. So I applaud your tenacity in getting this board back into working order. 👍

@@CRG what would interest me to see woukd be a respin of a board with all the upgrades for Storage, CPU, Memory rolled into an updated design. Ideally incorporating the buffee accelerator. Creating new up to date Amiga 'out of the box" so to speak.

At 20:48 you had a broken RAM SIMM socket. Who sold you that socket? I ask because the RAM sockets (with metal tabs) I purchased from RS Components Japan broke in the same exact way. Just curious if you purchased from the same vendor as I did.

Great video! My dear SE/30 also has the simasimac pattern but it happily chimes during power on. Pressing the NMI button plays the death tune. I think this might indicate that CPU and ROM is fine, the computer starts executing code but fails to initialize the video subsystem/ROM?

Its been a while since I looked at this on the MAC and I'm no expert but as I understand simasimac can basically be anything. If yours is making noises though it must be running code from the rom at least. I found the guys on the 68kMLA forums to be very useful for MAC queries. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have the same RAM sockets on two of my reloaded boards and I broke one in the same way, the plastics have aged terribly. Annoying as they weren’t cheap.
@CRG
@CRG Год назад
I've still to build my board and I'm undecided if I should try to recover sockets or just order new. Have to get a rom simm socket anyway so might just order the ram sockets at the same time.

will the new se/30 board be for sale? i’d love to save my machine
@CRG
@CRG Год назад
I won't be selling my board but I'm sure you can get your own made at one of the PCB houses. Everything you need is here - github.com/TheRealBolle/SE30 although you'll need to assemble it yourself.

Never use lead free solder for motherboards, its horrendous
@CRG
@CRG Год назад
I'm not sure what the original solder used was but the stuff I was using is certainly a leaded solder. Totally agree though, lead free is a pain.

What's the best way to contact you or send you stuff. Do you have a PO Box or similar? I have a lot of bits n pieces I could donate
