Loving your interactions with the 'other 'fisherman! in your public vids. It goes a lot of different ways with people, but you are very gracious and humble IMO. #respect
So much fun to watch the fishing and cooking. We, like you, think that mackerel are one of the most under appreciated salt water fish. Properly taken care of, post-harvest, they are amazing. Thanks for sharing!
I’m surprised that the herring haven’t shown up yet. Right around NYE was usually prime time for the herring run, although it would last for a bit once they arrived. As for the mackerel (we used to just refer to those ones as tinker mackerel), I actually never targeted those sized ones specifically, but caught them as bycatch when fishing for the small snapper bluefish when I was a kid. Never even thought I’d trying to eat them, but they do look good. Now, if you want to talk about Boston mackerel, we used to catch a bunch of those when heading out on the party/head boats for whiting and ling. They’d target the mackerel while the sun was still up, and then target the whiting and ling after dark. But that was a long time ago, and the whiting fishery (and the ling fishery, for the most part) has pretty much collapsed. I don’t know if any boats in the entire Northeast that go for them anymore. Anyway, we’d smoke tons of Boston Macs. Those were delicious. 😍
Love seeing you cooking a species we have in uk. Amazing when smoked, great bbq’d as masala mackeral and pairs really good with something acidic like rhubarb or pickled gooseberries when grilled
Great video Will! Happy New Year! The mackerel looked just like the ones I grew up on in PEI and NS, and they are beyond delicious. Thanks!!! That tomato salad, I’m making it tomorrow
So far only 22 sec in but had to shout out that PERFECT CIRCLE TREE BEHIND U. Tell me I had to do this on purpose. Ok, now ready for the rest of a wonderful dinner recipe from u. Happy NY, may it be a great year for u!!!
What was the salad made of...? I like mackerel too...! I think the video being chaotic on the dock is a lot like what really happens when we go fishing...lol
Will, I am fascinated with your videos (AWESOME!❤) and was curious if you have other channels that are cooking with meats and other foods? Thank you for sharing your talents with us. Magnificent!
Another great video, Will. And thanks for showing us the detail about making the herb oil. I have to try that. Could you use the technique with other herbs like cilantro and Basil?
great video and content…quick question made the green coconut curry once came out unbelievable…made it the 2nd time not as good it seemed like it lacked a little sweetness does the coconut milk vary in sweetness and if it does should i add sugar or more coconut milk wasn’t sure how to adjust …also do other ingredients overpower the coconut milk if ur not careful..thanks
Different kinds of coconut milk definitely have different sweetness levels. The limes could be more sour than sweet. The traditional curry usually calls for rock sugar, I never use it, but that could definitely help. And I would look up some other green curry recipes, and keep adjusting until you find your balance.
@@michaelmccaffrey8464 I know it isn’t an exact solution but that’s why I don’t post exact recipes. But keep messing around and tell me what you come up with
you remember me lol…it’s making me a better cook …got take advantage of interacting w you now …your gonna get huge and won’t be able to keep up w all the comments …thanks again im a new england transplant to florida so your fishing experiences are similar mine ..i have access to all the same fish …can’t believe your eating atlantic macs but i’m going to try it this summer when i go back home to see family, it looked great
ok.....question....I catch bigger mackerel in the late summer up here, but when I try to fillet them it's kinda dark and mushy.....I brain/bleed all my fish and ice them right away. Is it because they are much bigger or can I do a recipe like this with a larger one and have similar results even with darker meat? This looks really good....what i did looked really REALLY bad. Thank Will!
Haha so those could be big Boston mackerel, horse mackerel or another, it’s hard to say. Boston have a dark mushy meat but cook up amazing. Their shelf life isn’t the greatest. Only way to find out is to cook em up and see!
HEY DO YOU HAVE A WATER-FOUNTAIN NEAR BY I HEAR WATER? Anyways when you get that spinning wheel put it in front of that waterfall or fountain spin it and film with a beautiful background before you munch
I’m not sure about your rules over there, but in the UK none of those were legal to keep. They were just baby Atlantic mackerel, they have to be a minimum of 30cm in the UK otherwise you can face a £50,000 fine. If that’s the biggest size you can get in your area throughout the year and it’s legal keeping those small ones in your country then fair enough, but realistically you should be throwing them back so they can grow to full size before being eaten just out of respect for the population and giving the fish a chance to breed and produce more fish. I released about 12-15 of those baby mackerel yesterday (obviously I kept the ones above legal limit) apart from anything the babies barely have any meat on them in comparison to a healthy adult mackerel. I’m not hating here, I’m just more curious about what the difference is between our laws on fishing and yours? Do you have much regulation behind sea fishing or is it a fairly loose system?
It’s an incredibly tight system. In this area those mackerel are average size and yes legal. they are usually cast netted for bait. And rarely eaten. So what’s funny is that by taking and eating a few of these is a form of conservation by not taking our regularly caught fish and eating what most consider bait and inedible.
@@Citybassing they’re tricky, late summer and they don’t stick around, just show up and that fast they’re gone. I don’t target them specifically it just ends up being a right place right time sorta thing
i was down south in the uk a few weeks ago and i caught a monster mackerel about 2 and a half foot absolute monster and made the mistake of forgetting ice on the boat🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ it had a fishy taste but its fish u cant have a steak tasting fish
