My dad drove a Mack for Rc Cola back in 1979-81. I can remember being 5 yrs old and crawling through the cab. That two stroke diesel V8 rattle has been with me ever since. What a great truck !
LOL...the last R Model I drove had a (20 speed) Quadruplex trans 5 speed main box, 4 speed aux and was hauling oversize ...she would run out at 63 mph but could have yanked a mountain down the road when you was in the basement...the ride with the Camelback suspension would shake the teeth outta your head. GOOD TIMES Hahahaha
Fun fact: The I65/I20 interchange in Birmingham aka "Malfunction Junction" has just been demolished last week to begin work on an redesigned interchange which it desperately needed. Unfortunately, traffic has to be redirected to other roads which includes 18 wheelers going through neighborhood streets.
I’ve always known it as the R model Mack. And I actually learned to drive trucks with one of these. A friend of mine used to own one and drove as a Owner/Op. It was a blue color 5-spd and he taught me how to drive trucks with this particular truck.
i havent actually gotten to drive one but i work in a warehouse with some co workers who happen to have there job title as cdl drivers who move aircraft engines and the property truck is actually a mack r series and holy shit man the sounds are off the fuckin hook (ps i have the oppertunity to ride in one of these any time i want when there doing a engine move)
If any of you fellow truck lovers are in PA every year there is a vintage truck show in Maqungie PA. (Same town as the Mack truck plant) you can also tour said mack plant & the mack museum. Worth it
You driving this old girl made my day! Never got to drive one of these classics myself but rode with my grandfather in his 1965 Mack a few times. I'd love to see more of your ATS with the good old Mack R! Thanks for the tip on how you downloaded the coast to coast mod. I finally got it to work by getting it straight from the SCS site.
Drove an R series Mack firetruck. I got a bottle of tequila with a sombrero on the bottle. I kept it and put the sombrero on the bulldog hood ornament. Made many fires with the sombrero bulldog on the hood. Brought us good luck. The engine is a 6 cyl Mack Maxidyne engine. It is almost bullet proof. Thanks for the memory.
Awesome looking combo. Not just the truck but the tanker as well. Great stuff. Interior looks great as well. In that previous truck the lighting looked very weird.
elite funny thing is a lotta companies are paying more for cummins now due to paccar always being in the shop. all i can say cummins is only damn good engine left in a late model fleet. every other engine is compelte trash now. trust me i know from expierence paccars are least reliable motor out there. followed by the DD13 TO 15 TO 16 NOW. followed by maxxiforce. those the least reliable motors if you ask me.the most reliable motors are a lotta glider kit trucks now. aside from isx/x series motors from cummins.
Love the R model Mack. My grandfather drove for Chemical Leaman Tank Lines here in PA and they were at one time the largest chemical hauler in the country. They and Matlack were known back in the day for their Mack fleets. Everything about this mod be Harven is amazing. It brings back childhood memories of my grandfather and the truck.
Father drove containers out of the ports in NJ with one of these, think it was an 86', this is what I learned to drive on. Harven did a fantastic job on this!! Brings back so many memories!! God I miss those days...and my father...😢😢
She looks real good. Pity there was no air-starter. My father drove a flintstone Mack with a 5 speed 237 motor hauling a float and picking road machinery. Thanks for the memories of that period of my life. Happy driving Jeff.
Hey Jeff, you should use that truck with the new purchasable logging trailer from SCS. You can get a logging rack on the truck and it looks pretty legit in my opinion. I did that in ATS recently and it was awesome! I did a mechanical logging course last year and lots guys around here (Maine) still use old ass trucks like the Mack R or converted old deuce-and-a-half military trucks to haul logs, so it's worth a try in-game. I cannot wait to get my CDL in 2 1/2 years when I'm 21. I feel like I was born to be out on the road as a trucker!
I worked for my dad who managed a small trucking company in vermont in the 80s and 90s. I drove and worked on these R Models (and CH model Macks) for several years. I can specifically remember the smell of exhaust and filling them with diesel. When I was really small walking around the yard where the trucks were backing trailers and being put into garages etc. I remember feeling very scared of the trucks because they were so loud. Great trucks.
I drove one exactly like that for Matlack for 5 years. I pulled tankers out places like that in NJ and ran as far west as Chicago, as far south as Atlanta, and as far north as Federicton, NB Canada. Those were interesting times.
I love these Mack R trucks i drove one once for the carnival company i work for, Its not a semi configuration its got a 20 foot flat bed and a folding crane on it usually has our 200 generator plant on the deck and pulls a tornado ride behind it. I have worked for this company for six years now and i have seen that truck go through about three engines idk from bad drivers or what but for some reason its has a problem keeping the push rods inside the engine beautiful truck to drive when its running properly and no shortage of power runs up and down mountains like there nothing its nick named the mountain goat because it dose so well climbing it strangely only seems to have problems running flat ground where you think would be the easiest on it but thats where it always seems to catastrophically fail never on the steep harsh mountain terrain but any way like alway keep up the grate content Jeff and i shall keep watching
You should do a route with this truck with Texaco Skin on it. My grandparents on my dads side own the old school all metal Mack R Combo toy truck and it’s all red but it’s got a cream white Texaco logo on it.
Awesome vid. Your right, the old Dayton style Mack wheels are super pretty. I rode thousands of miles in Mack’s when I was a kid, great memories, thanks again.
used to haul out of unimin in peavely mo. back to tenn. in an old R D model mack with the twin stick(quadraplex) after a day in that i wanted kenworth t600b back lol
I had a 86 RS6 dumptruck 300hp with a 5 SPD and a splitter the loudest thing I ever heard I called her burta ,she was slow and hard to drive but she would go places most trucks couldn't I loved that old truck broke my heart when I had to sell it
Oh, my God! This truck and trailer combination is gorgeous. A nice change of pace, compared to modern trucks. You always know what's best to show off, Jeff.
I'm excited about the Daytona 500 and the speedweeks too just like you, Jeff Favignano. I love your videos, and keep up the wonderful work. By the way, I love this Mack truck R on American Truck simulator too, looks very cool.
About 12 years ago I worked for a division of New England Motor Freight. We had an old NEMF R model Mack at our terminal for a while, I don’t even know why it was there. I asked my dispatcher if I could take it on my run one day but he just laughed at me. “You’re not taking that thing” he said, didn’t want me breaking down. So that was my one shot I guess... I did drive it around the yard a bit though so at least I have that, haha. Didn’t have an air starter, but that would have just been greedy!
Great truck model - I believe that I recognize the old style _Signal-Stat 900_ indicator switch, too! Great video, @Jeff Favignano - Thanks much! Cheers-
Could you PLEASE do a load in Michigan, from Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie, do you could go over the Mackinaw Bridge. Loving your videos and this series, keep it up Jeff!
Jeff I work for Erath county pct 2 and we have 3 r model Mack’s that we drive all the time 2 of them are dump trucks that are 330hp 5 speeds and the other we use to pull equipment and a water trailer that is exactly like the trailer in this video it was a military fuel trailer and we made it into a water trailer the r model that pulls it is a 430hp 10 speed compared to newer trucks they are loud and ride like jackhammers. The interior is spot on with this mod ours are more grey but this mod is highest quality
Cool truck. I would love to this one and the Pete 352 again even if the model isn't finished, it is a good lookin' truck. I think it was worth the $10 for for the time it takes to make them. Love the old classic trucks. Glad you didn't almost roll this one. LOL
i use too drive a 65 Mack r pulling double belly dumps with salt 220'000 lbs of salt out at great salt lake mineral here in Utah that was good times spent all winter in one
there are few around my area that run mostly roll off trash hoppers. athough i have seen an r model running a 48 footer flatbed with the 5th wheel on the frame. wonder if you could switch that gearbox out for a 10 or 13 spd. i would keep the same engine. but swap out the 5 spd for an 8 or 10 spd. maybe a 15 spd. Jeff you should defently run logs in the next mack r video.
I haven’t looked through your channel for it yet, but I’m assuming you haven’t done a video on the Mack superliner? If so could you please do that? I get it, kind if the same thing but the superliner I’m pretty sure is a night cab so you could do longer hauls. Anyway, great video!
Awesome sounding and looking truck, ive driven almost everything but never a old mack like that im also glad you kept the single headlights looks so much better that way does this game have a classic 80s peterbilt 359 short nose?
I drive but sadly never driven one of these i learned on an old cab over with gorilla steering... this is my first time watching this type of video no scale houses or ELD's?... at the USP warehouse if you try to get closer to the warehouse side before backing it should give you more tractor swing out room..
I agree Jeff it’s an awesome truck I’ve been thinking about using it again but I also play ets2 and I can’t wait to try out the new man trucks they added to the game
That and this was the truck/trailer setup in the movie "duel", least I think it was in the movie. Been such a long time since I have seen that and Maximum Overdrive.
That is actually what I cut my teeth on. An old M6 Mack 350. Horrible. Lol It was an Old Duplex(Twin Stick) and it was a 10 speed. Only problem is you could only use about 7 of those gears. Lmao holes in the floorboard and it would do everything but go fast. Pull Hell off its hinges once it got traction. Had a cement body on it. And it would do all of about 45 mph.
I've got a 79 Mack U (an R but an short hood and offset cab). It's got the Maxidyne making 275Hp and almost 1,000ft lbs of torque. Its also got the Maxitorque 5 speed, which is interesting to drive, you rev her up to about 2 grand, pull it out of gear and let it drop 6-700rpm then let her fall back into gear. The saying goes, you can make a sandwich or read a chapter of your favorite book in between gears
