In this video, I head out to try and catch my first mackerel of the year. I'd be using some metal jigs to see if I could catch one of these tasty fish to cook the following day.
Having succeeded, (just!). I decided to make a very simple, but very tasty "Fishermans Soup".
This recipe consists of a few simple ingredient’s and as you'll see in the video, it's easy enough to prepare.

OMG Cal , super video and reciept . Thank a lot ..Just a small advice , change your pan . There are a lot of scratches in it , aluminum might be entegrate ur food..🙏

Its not soup as someone further below sais ^ But ye looks good well made . Personally i like Mackerel same as trout old school in the oven in silver foil for a good 45 mins approx , with Jacket Potato and slice bread / butter thats me Tight lines 🎣

Metal jig from the rocks afterwards such a delicious meal It could not be any better. This week it is 3 month to my days on the shore😢 Until than I will stick with Your Videos Tight lines

Wow that looks good. Is the saffron necessary, it’s not a spice I have worked with. So colourful too. Really good video Cal.

You don’t have to add the saffron no. It’s a subtle flavour and gives a nice red tinge to anything you’re adding it to. Thanks a lot.

Hi! What kind of rod are good for jigging mackerel please and what are you using.

I use any of my normal bass rods for mackerel fishing. In this video I was using a Shimano Technium 21-54g rod. Any spinning rod will do, heavy or light.

Do you ever get inland to do a bit of river or lake fishing ? A few trout ‘catch n cook’ would be a bit different.

We do have fresh water fishing over here however, from what I hear, there’s a hefty waiting list for the permits. It’s not something I’ve ever done over here before. My only freshwater fishing experience was in a couple of the dams in Cyprus.

Good man, Cal, I defo know summer's coming when you're on the mackerel, I remember all too well the ceviche video. I think it might be a bit early in Cornwall for the mackerel, but when it's just so beautiful being out and trying, I don't even care if I blank! Cal mackerel fishing = SUMMER!! 😎
