Hi Phil, that is a big compliment to live up to :) but thank you! I am honored. I am also happy to see another dog lover :) Enjoy your DL32R, it is a powerful piece of gear.
Dan - I recently bought a DL16S to replace a cumbersome powered Mackie mixer. Your videos have fast-tracked my understanding of the kit, and within a week of it arriving, we used it for a gig. The control is unbelievable. I know this tech's been around for a while, but wow, what a game-changer for our bass/drum/guitar three-piece. I use a Roland TD30, both our bass player and guitarist use Helix LT's and we all hard wire our in-ears to the separate Aux outs. The DL16S was an obvious choice for us and is already a hit, in no small part thanks to you buddy. A huge thank you from Royal Deeside, Scotland!
Greetings David! That really made my day! The technology is still so cool. But the real technology is that guys like me can make videos and people in Scotland can benefit! I love that. Have a super great and safe year!
Wow Bruce! Thanks for subscribing! I am just finishing a Master Fader video on vocal compression. I think you will really enjoy having the DL32R. It has some very valuable features that the DL16S and DL32S simply don't have. I should have two more videos uploaded in just a couple of hours. Thank YOU!
@@user-jx3jp3gb4x Do you have videos explaining how to use the return 1/2 & 3/4 channels for break music for example? Where does the signal input come from and what device can be used to play the break music? Also any videos explaining the recording to a hard drive while a band is playing a live show? Much appreciated if you could help. Thank you.
@@bruceirwin5557 thanks Bruce, I will make a video of using a USB drive connected directly to the DL32R and explaining how to play back those files as a virtual soundcheck.
I love you so much and I learned a lot from you, in fact, not only a lot, but everything I know about Mackie. Thank you for everything. And happy new year
Thank you for the nice compliment and suggestion for doing an in-depth video about the routing page and how to get audio in and out of a DAW. Thank you! and I trust you had a great Christmas too.
sounds like a good video ,, it will be short but at least it will clarify those things,, thanks for watching, I hope you subscribed, liked and rang the bell :)
Hi Dan, thank you for appearing in person! I received my DL32R in April 2017 and your videos were great help. I would like to see your best tips on managing different setups with the device. During rehearsal vs. being on gigs with always different setups.
that would be nearly impossible to do in a video since my microphones, monitors, main speakers, subs and everything else would be completely different than yours. I don't think that is a possibility, but thanks for suggesting it.
Thanks for the suggestion, there are already a ton of RU-vid videos on that very subject. I do not use a speaker processor like DBX or other common units that come with a "calibrated" microphone. If I did make a video like you have suggested, I do not believe it would be helpful especially if the gear that I use was different than what you or other folks use. Bear with me as I go into some detail about why I don't bother with pink noise and "ringing out a room" anymore, and it certainly is not because I don't care or am lazy. The term "ringing out a room" to me means that the person doing that is only interested in the maximum gain before feedback, and if that is the goal, then sound quality (fidelity) is not as important. Using an EQ to try to "FIX" a room's poor acoustics is not the correct way to make any given system sing better in that space. Only making corrections to the acoustics with sound deadening and other acoustic attempts will really yield a noticeable and very valuable improvement, but at a very large cost of time and money. Yes, many people do these "pink noise" tests, but to me that will usually make an otherwise nice sounding speaker system sound false, not to mention, all the monitors on stage that are negatively affecting the sound quality that the audience will be subjected to. Typically, when a room has bad acoustics, it is because certain frequencies build up due to reflective flat surfaces causing some frequencies to bounce around more than others, this sound is the room's reverb time (RT) and in most cases makes the room just sound BAD. Sometimes,,, these reflections of sound (reverb time) are beneficial, common with concert halls for acoustic music, mostly the classical genre, and for that, the acoustics are very preferable, but not for a sound system or the person/s running it. :) No equalizer of any kind can fix these acoustic problems. If I am installing a permanent sound system in a theater, house of worship or other facility for music and speech, then yes, performing this task is a very important and practical thing to do. For jobs where I get there, unload, set up, run the job then tear down and get out... it is just not practical from a time standpoint. I will finish my little rant here :) with the fact that if a person knows how to properly use pink noise to "ring out" a room, then that person with years of experience can do that job way faster and without the noise simply by trusting his/her ears. For me, as a general rule of thumb, I stick with cutting just three frequencies and no more. Sorry for that long message. :) Gee Dan, tell us how you really feel :)
Your stuff is always so thorough and well thought out!! I play in a 3 piece band and have struggled to record our live gigs via my DL16. I use a Zoom F3 at rehearsal and just record out of the Main Right output into the Zoom. But when we play out live and use 2 speakers, those outputs are taken. I’ve tried out of the headphone jack with intermittent success. Would love to see something short on best practice to do this. Thanks!!
Hi Alberto, here is a video that I just made that helps with recording from Mackie's Master Fader mixers, and other brands as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3ZHy4idGoH4.html
Another great idea for a video David. That is a feature I think most people just don't use. Great for theater work, but it also has good uses for a multitude of users in various settings. Thanks!
that's right down my alley :) Great suggestion! I use Altiverb on a Mac laptop sometimes.... using plugins from an external computer will always involve very unfortunate latency issues that typically are not acceptable for live use however, with reverb, the latency is not an issue since it is almost always preferred to have some "pre-delay" anyway. Now, using external hardware devices will not have any latency issues.
Hey Dan, I'm not sure if this has been covered yet but I'm wondering about monitor mixes. Specifically whether all 5 of my band mates can access their own monitor mix, while having the rest of the mixer "safe from meddling". The Behringer XAir has a specific "Monitor Mix App", how does Mackie handle this?
Hi Jonathan, thanks for watching and commenting. Unfortunately I think this is one area that I can not help with. In order for me to make a video showing how to update from 4 to 5, I would need a mixer that has Master Fader 4 on it. My mixer is currently using Master Fader 5.2.1. If I recall, all snapshots that were created in Master Fader 4 are NOT compatible with 5, but do this first before you update to 5. Click on the gear icon at the top, then go to the Settings. Near the bottom it shows "System Backup". You can export the mixer's "Shows". My suggestion is to literally open each one of your important snapshots, and look at all the critical settings, channel names, input gain settings, volume levels of main mix and any aux mixes. As long as you have that information, you can make any changes needed. I highly recommend that you do update to 5. It is WAY better than 4. Thanks again...Dan
Any advice on muddy vocals? How to eq vocals and tracks to sound clear and crisp. I just done a gig but didn’t have the confidence to play around with my sound during performing. Thanks in advance 😊
Hi, what microphone are you using for vocals. SM58's are muddy to me,.... so if that's what you are using, that's why they are muddy. Regardless of what mic you are using that is producing muddy sound, start by turning on a high pass filter, (HPF) and set it to around 100 Hz. for a male vocal,... and around 125-150 for a female vocal, that will help immensely. There are other engineers who will tell you to NEVER boost EQ, and that is a good rule of thumb, I (usually) subscribe to that rule too, but it is not against the law. If it was, there would not be a (+) dB next to the gain of that EQ band. Typically, if something is "muddy" that is a word that describes an excess amount of lows and low midrange. Simply reducing the excessive "boominess" will magically allow the high end clarity to actually be heard. Sometimes you can boost the high frequency band around 8 Khz., this is a practical thing to do if the rest of the frequency response is nice. Be careful when boosting a frequency around this range since a number of popular powered speakers these days are a smidge too hot up there,.... but use a minimal amount... (perhaps 4-6 dB with a medium bandwidth). That should help quite a bit. After you try these suggestions, come back and post your results for the rest of the viewers. And, if you are using SM58 mics, you would do yourself and everyone a favor by trying some of Sennheiser's dynamic mics. I still have and love some AKG C535EB cardioid mics, which are condensers. Some engineers think a condenser mic picks up too much ambient stuff, but that will depend on the amount of ludicrously LOUD musicians on stage. My two cents anyway :) Thanks for viewing, subscribing, and hitting the bell and like button,... and all that other stuff :). Have a great weekend!
@@user-jx3jp3gb4x thank you . I have the shure GLXD4/beta 87a mic and use KSQ 12 k series. I have a gig tonight and will try that. Before I do I will set up this afternoon and try. P.S I am a female vocalist . I think even though I have been performing for years, I’m new to doing my own sound and trying not to get overwhelmed with so much info or creating a ear unfriendly sound 🤣
@@alleyg8602 Hi Alley, i completely understand your desire to make nice pleasant sound. Your Shure 87 is a nice sounding mic, however, it is a little bit overzealous in the midrange around 500 Hertz (Hz). I am very happy for you that you have nice QSC speakers, I use those too!!! Since you are learning this stuff, I will keep my suggestions to a minimum. :) Master Fader has an equalizer (EQ) on each input as well as the outputs. I suggest leaving the main EQ for your two QSC speakers off. The word "equalizer" is used because it is a tool that we can use to keep all frequencies equal, which is ideal. But more often than not, we use the EQ to alter the sound to our liking. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS trust your ears. So, I suggest that you use the "Modern" EQ not the "Vintage", and because you are learning this stuff... I want you to not just learn it, but to fully understand it. In the EQ of your mic channel, there are four bands of EQ. Use the 2nd band (2) and try your best to stay away from moving the balls up, down and back and forth. Use the slide widgets at the bottom. There are three sliders for each band. G (Gain), F (Frequency) and Q (Bandwidth). As you move each of these sliders, you will see the value changing at the top of the screen. Set the frequency of Band 2 to somewhere close to 500 Hertz (Hz.) If you want to be specific, you can tap on the green value numbers at the top and then your keyboard will pop up, you can directly enter 500 then ENTER,... on an iPad (DONE). Cool huh? Set the Gain (G) to -5 dB, and the bandwidth (Q) to around 2.5. You can save this EQ setting as a preset, click on the white "Presets" tab near the top and then choose "Store Preset'. Name it however you like maybe Beta 87 and hit DONE. You can now go to that "Presets' tab and choose it. Anyway, enough babbling here, sorry :) Have a great gig! Let us know how it goes.
I would like to have video on how to use dante as input when doing recordings. I have tried to do this when i tried to rehearse using multitracks. And i did not succeed
What mixer are you trying to use Dante with? The only DL mixers that can work with Dante is the DL32R, and the DL32R has to be fitted with a Dante card. The DL16S and DL32S can not use Dante.
I have a DL 16 s. The internal router is not working so good. Even when I hardwire it through a cat 6 cable. It sometimes loose the connection… just bought an external 5 g router… hope that will fix the problem. That could be an interesting topic to cover on you beautiful youtube chanel🤗
Hi LarsLisa! Thank you for commenting and watching :) I too have a DL16S but have not had it on a remote job yet, so I don't know how good the internal router will be. I have had very good results with the Apple Express router with my older DL32R. The Apple Express can be purchased used. Let all of us here know what router you have purchased and how well it does. Thank you!
Replying to my own reply... It is now June of 2024, and I have now done a number of jobs with the DL16S using it's built in router, and it performed way better than I expected. Of course, this will always be determined by how cluttered the Wi-Fi signals are in and around the event location, but to me, I was very surprised.
@@davidleungaxiom3491 I don't do streaming, but I did download the OBS software but threw it away back in 2020 because I only needed it to help someone else. So, I should be able to download it again to make the video. The video will not be a streaming video, just a tutorial here on youtube of the connections. I assume you already know how to set it up?
I have a problem, it connects with the iPad, that is, it says connected, but no command works, it does not mark on the screen, I already tried with another iPad, and a tablet, same symptom, delete sofaware from the table, load everything again and same symptom, what else could I do?
Two questions for you to help me help you... is this the first time you are using the Mackie DL mixer? Have these devices worked before with this mixer?
@@user-jx3jp3gb4x Thank you for your response, it is not the first time I have used this device, I have already used it on several occasions, I woke up one day with this problem, I already tried it with another iPad and a tablet, same symptom, I tried it via WiFi, same problem, I did reset to the console, load software again and still the same, all updated, I have a video I can send you
