MDOT photographer Tim Burke recently assisted a Japanese production company shooting a documentary about one of the Mackinac Bridge Authority's steeplejacks. Here is some of the footage shot using a drone we thought everyone would enjoy.
The Golden Gate bridge has nothing on the Mighty Mac ! The Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. You can see a historic island that in it's history was held by three countries. It has stood up to wind gusts of 30 miles an hour. It deals with ice every up to a few feet thick every year. I doubt that the waters under the Golden Gate ever freeze.
Lol that’s funny. This bridge is ugly and has no appeal versus the Golden Gate Bridge which is far more beautiful, including the surroundings. This bridge has like three different colors, and only has one lane of traffic each way. Also it’s way less popular than the GGB. Nice try though. It’s always those that compare a wanna be to a marvel. I don’t blame you tho. The GGB is known world wide. It attracted 10 million visitors annually.
It really is magnificent!!!! I live in Michigan, we have crossed it many time's, just beautiful!!! The Mighty Mac is something to see!!!! Mackinaw is just the place you have to see!!! The Grand Hotel, is magnificent!!!! The Pictured Rock's are stunning!!!! Come here, you will love it!!!!🥀🥀🥀🥀..2022...
I drove across this beautiful bridge 2-20-2021 on my way to Rapid River, MI. Unfortunately, it was dark when I first got to see it and visibility was low. On the way back the next day was a better view and the lakes were frozen, but it was a sight to see. I would love to come back and see this place in the summer, it sure was beautiful.
To this day one of the most memorable parts of my life was approaching and driving across that bridge. It’s a wonder of North America. And consider how vital it is. Without it you would either have to boat are take a verrrry long detour to get from either side of that narrow channel of water
We do Minis on the Mac..2015..17..19...we alway have the same room @ Super 8...225..has a view overlooking the bridge..bay...been coming up to Michigan since 1970...I love this area..used to fly to Mackinaw Island yrs ago..with my parents..would get 2 rooms at the Grand ..a suite for them..and a little room for me..those were the days...I love this bridge...😁.
Sadly, the Mackinac Bridge isn't as famous as most other suspension bridges, despite the fact that it is the longest bridge in the western hemisphere, and until the completion of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, was the longest in the world in terms of overall length (8,614 feet of suspended span between the anchorages. Yes, I'm aware it's only 3,800 feet between the towers. The only reason suspension bridges are measured this way is because not all of them are suspended spans before the towers). To be honest, this beautiful bridge is criminally underrated, and it's a spectacular sight to behold in person, whether crossing it or just from the shoreline
I drove on that bridge in 2004, it gave me the feeling to drive on the sea, on the water. Just water on both sides and the road (bridge) looks so thin while driving that I was a bit scared. In awe, but scared.
We drove up in September from Kentucky. it was our first time in northern Michigan. We loved mackanaw. We went again in October. Can’t wait to go back. It’s a great place. Even with the crowds,it was still laid back. 😊
See those diamond shapes? They look so small but they are the size of humans! Fun fact: there is a cement truck in one of the towers! Did you know this?
Hi Grace! You'll want to get in touch with the Mackinac Bridge Authority to discuss options for flying a drone near the structure: 906-643-7600. It is our understanding that the public is not authorized to fly a drone over the bridge/traffic without a certificate of authorization (COA) and the drone must be at least 1,000 feet away. The Mackinac bridge Authority will have more info for you when you call them. Thanks for the question, and thanks for following MDOT!
