Mackinac Island Flight & Fun 

My wife and I cruised the Great Lakes for 26 years and always stopped at the island. Full time Florida now but never forget our times on the Lakes.

I am from Michigan and live in the Lansing area its been a while since i was in Mackinaw, seeing Mackinaw city, the Bridge, St. Ignace and the Island warms my heart, Thank You.

When I first stumbled on your channel I looked for a Mackinac Island trip. Well I’m glad you finally visited a place I call my favorite starting place. From 1965 to 1978 we traveled to Mac by boat from Grose Ille. We spent 4 to 6 weeks traveling to a different destination in the norther lakes each summer. Mac was always considered our starting place. even when we traveled four days to get there from grose ille. When we would get there we all considered it "Vacation just started". Never been on a ferry but did fly out then in for a quick trip around the straits "uncles push-pull". My #1 bucket list item; ride a snow mobile there on the Mac-Ice bridge. Then return and repeat the trip (exact GPS) on my wave-ride. Hope you enjoy it as much as we have over the years. PS: two motorized vehicles on the island in the 70s were "ambulance" and "fire truck". snowmobiles allowed in the winter. great channel folks

Kevin, that was a great trip. Many years ago I flew into the island with a friend in his Bonanza. He lived in Michigan and recommended it very highly. Was a trip to remember. No motorized vehicles except for the excavating ones working on the island. The kids must realize how fortunate they are to have opportunities that most do not have.

We've done that trip a couple times, albeit in a 172, years ago but from KMDW (and yes, stopped for gas in Pellston too.) It's amazing how some things have not changed. The Grand Hotel, the "taxis", the fudge shops. Great to reminisce. Thanks for sharing.

My dad was a pipeline patrol pilot, flying a Cessna 210 based out of Detroit. When I was 12 or 13, his company sent him to a financial seminar on Mackinac Island. So our whole family (5 of us) flew up to Mackinac in the 210. My little brother fell out of the horse-drawn taxi on the way into town. He was embarrassed but not injured. We rented bikes. We ate fudge. We visited all the places in this video. We took a ferry over to see the Mackinac Bridge. What a fun memory from my childhood. I'd love to fly my own family up there.

Today I was bouncing around RU-vid when I happened by one of your videos. What caught my eye was Jaime in the thumbnail for the video. It's not what your thinking I assure you! When I first saw Jaime I about fell out of my chair! Jaime, you are almost a carbon copy of my girlfriend Lindsey. Sadly, I lost my beloved Lindsey a little over one year ago to a sudden illness. It is amazing how much you two look and ever act alike. I know this will sound strange but watching a few of your videos today was almost like I got to see Lindsey again. I can't put into words enough how much I miss her. I don't think I will be watching anymore of your videos for obvious reasons but wanted to share with you how much you touched a stranger today and say thank you. Daniel

Great video kids. Pink Pony is out favorite place to eat. 3 summers ago our son interned there during the summer with the police dept, 2 summers ago he was there as his first job as a police officer.

Talk about the luckiest guy in the world ! A beautiful wife, two great kids and a fantastic airplane. All that and she handles the radios like a pro....bet she is a pilot in her own right.... Count your blessings...

My Wife and I were there last year on labor day ,for our 30th anniversary stayed at mission point resort. very nice time, the pink pony had good food and cold beer, ahh the smell of horse poop and fudge....have a great time

Loved it! We used to go to Douglas Lake in the late 50's and early 60's and my parents knew someone who flew into Pellston to meet us there. They would buzz us on the beach. Over a few summers we watched them build the bridge. Brings back old times! :-)

Was there in August 1977 the week that Elvis Presley passed away.Drove from Port Clinton ,Ohio where I live . Loooooooooooong drive to the bridge. Took the ferry to Mac Island . Beautiful place , Another safe flight . Hope you had a safe trip home y'all. Take care........

Used to spend a couple weeks in the summers in Mackinac Island when I was a kid. Thanks for this. It looks the same.

Mackinac Island was a favorite place for my wife and I. We stayed on the island (as opposed to staying in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace and taking the ferry across every day). After the last ferry leaves the place gets really peaceful. There ARE a few vehicles on the island, all official. There’s police, ambulance, fire equipment, and utility vehicles. I’ve only seen them at night. They hide them pretty well.

Born and raised in Flint,Mi and never been to Mackinac Island. Mom worked on the Island in the 50's in her teenage years. Nice flight .

visited Mackinac Island as a kid back in 70's. Beautiful up there! As for water temps of L. MI, you're dead on Kevin! I was crewing on my buddy's sailboat one year and we were becalmed several miles off the coast of WI when the skipper gave us leave to jump in if we wanted (it was a 90+ degree day). I was first to go in. Couldn't even talk when I surfaced! Luckily, we do get the warmer surface water on the MI side of the lake 99% of the time (thanks to prevailing SW winds), so water at the beaches is usually in the 70's mid Summer.

Looks like earlier this year, flowers weren't out at the Grand and not as crowded which wouldn't be as surprising this year. Went with my grandparents every year to the Grand Hotel for a convention. I was there for the filming of "Somewhere in Time" and Christopher Reeves was in the room next to us, managed to get his autograph. He was quite pleasant and friendly.

Brand new here! I worked at the Grand Hotel for summer many moons ago. I think I was 16 or 17. I grew up in Marquette Michigan. This island is beautiful! The hotel was amazing! Getting around was so cool. Very different than anywhere else. This video brought back some memories for me. Thanks for sharing it.

Welcome to beautiful northern Michigan... there are many cool things to do in the Northern part of the Lower Peninsula. Drop into the little airport at Indian River and get someone to take you by boat around the inland waterway. You will love it!! Love your channel!

Glad y'all did this trip. We live in SE Michigan and get to Mackinac Island at least once a year. Great views and a one of a kind place. We took a 172 out out of Marine City Airport with friends many years ago, great flight. If you ever have the chance, make a weekend at the Grand Hotel

Did touch and go's while stationed in the UP at Kincheloe AFB about 40 miles north of St Ignace on the northern end of the "Big" Bridge! On weekends when I wasn't on call at the USAF Hospital I tried to spend most summer weekends on the Island! One of the only bright spots of being stationed 20 miles south of the Canadian border! Took the family there a couple of times, last time 2017. Loved it!

You really inspired me to learn how to fly, me and my family drove from Indianapolis to Mackinac Island, 6 hour drive, the longest trip ever, thanks for the videos keep them coming 👍

Just an awesome adventure! My girlfriends sister was married on Mackinac Island.. Beautiful wedding and boy did we ALL have a great time in a wonderful location/setting. We didn't fly in however.. Took the ferry over...

Going to put that on the bucket list. Looks great. Clean.

The wife and I flew up there a couple of years ago. Our intentions were to land on the island but strong cross winds were not favorable at all so we went into Pellston where Rwy 32 was a much better option that day. There was a shuttle bus to the ferry so we got to the island just fine. I'll show my wife your video showing how we were supposed get there. Thanks for posting!

Love your Videos!!! We live in Southeast Michigan and enjoy Put-In-Bay several times a year (Awesome video on your Put-In-Bay adventure btw). Years ago I flew into Mackinac Island a few times while enjoying the privileges of my Private Pilot License. Haven't been there since (like 28 years). From the UK and in my youth (1990`s) I did a lot of hour building trips to Florida and CA and unlike the UK or Europe the shire experience of getting into or over flying Class B airports like Tampa or Orlando is an amazing experience. The BEST experience was in 1996 me and my fellow hour builders out of Bartow FL were around for a Space Shuttle launch so we got in our planes and flew to MERRITT Island and just before I landed the shuttle launched seeing those thick plumes of rocket smoke in front of me just outside the exclusion zone I will never forget Great experience just to be able to fly my own PA28 at that time. Best Flying will always be in the USA for the total freedoms you have. Memories...

I once flew with my grandfather in his Piper Seneca from DuPage airport to Mackinac island. The clouds were overcast for most of the flight as we started descending towards the airport we noticed oil streaming out of one of the engines. We figured we would just add oil after landing, but after going missed on two approaches due to a low ceiling we had to divert to a different airport. It was a good thing we diverted when we did cause we found out the oil cap was almost completely out of the engine. My grandfather still denies that it was his fault ever time I bring that flight up lol

Lake Michigan along Lake Shore Drive to me is never warm, no matter how hot the weather gets. My husband and I were up in Saugatuck in July, and the Lake was so warm and beautiful. Never been to Mackinac Island, hopefully next year. Love your videos..:-)

Agreed on your thoughts on crossing the lake. Lots of guys in a twin will bomb right across... I take your approach, stay near to land if able. Same as over large areas of Ocean... if possible stick near the shore.

I've been waiting for this trip to post! My wife and I have been to Mackinac Island so many times, and it never gets old. We often like to take a break from biking at the east end of runway 26 and watch the planes landing low overhead. Looked like there were a few people there when you were on final. 🙂 It was so cool seeing you guys enjoy some of our favorite spots! The only weird thing was how few people were there. Usually it's crawling with people. Great video!

Kevin was so correct, that SR22 flew a pattern larger than what an B788 would have flown, geez Cirrus driver. :) Was lucky enough to get to Mackinac once as a kid and loved it. Great taxi ride from the airport. What a wonderful little town with beautiful scenery. Thanks guys for sharing your overnight with us all.

You guys rock! Since before I even had my private there are two destinations I always wanted to fly into, Put-in Bay and Mackinac island. I stopped renting planes to fly regularly before I made it to either one, and have been saving the money instead with the goal of buying a kit plane. But it is fantastic riding along with you guys to my virtual bucket list destinations.

Brings back fond memories, as and I honeymooned on Macinac 14 years ago this month. We just drove the bridge southbound yesterday on the way home from 6Y9.

This Georgia Boy went into Duluth Harbor in January doing Ice Rescue Training. Wearing a gumby suit of course. Even in August in Duluth the water is cold down around 3 feet. Brrr.

Mackinac Island does have a few tractors but otherwise the choices to get around are limited to walking, bicycles, carriage rides or horseback. Beautiful getaway when the Midwest gets too hot and stifling
