Thanks for doing this! I have a 2014 27in iMac on Catalina 10.15.7 and am debating if I should update to Big Sur. Looks pretty similar to me in terms of performance. Did you try some 3D applications like TinkerCAD in the browser or gaming?
@@EPSTomcat11 I've been using it for 3D printing slicing with PrusaSlicer, and some OnShape CAD on the browser. All that stuff + Fusion 360 work just fine on both Catalina and Big Sur, no difference at all.
@@EPSTomcat11 It's the one with only 512MB VRAM (on the NVIDIA GPU), and 1024MB when using the integrated graphics. The RAM is only 4GB too haha. I don't use very heavy files on the CAD so it runs fine. SSD.
Finally, was waiting for the Catalina VS Big Sur video for two weeks and finally someone done it. Thank you so much. The only thing is left to do if finally to compare the battery life on Catalina 10.15.7 vs Big Sur 11.0.1. Out of all the humans on the planet, none has done it yet on RU-vid, weird.
Yeah lol, I will reinstall without Boot Camp partition or Catalina partition at some point I think. I will let you know if the boot time changes ^_^. I'll probably wait until 11.1 and make a new video
With all due respect, your boot times were abysmal. I would suggest you update this video when you get the unit in question repaired or the software configured correctly. The system should be booting with either Catalina/Big Sur in under 25 seconds.
The real question is, why is your computer taking 45 seconds to start up with an SSD?? It takes mine no more than 18 seconds from power button press to login screen for Catalina on mid 2012 MacBook Pro. It’s even faster on earlier versions. Mavericks, for example, it’s nearly instant
Catalina is slow as shit itself so this comparison doesn't really make much sense, Big Sur also has some very questionable interface changes.. installing High Sierra felt like an actual upgrade for me lol
Can you please do another video like this where you also look at power consumption between Catalina and Big Sur/Monterey? Idle and working. There is a big difference.
Hi there Lars, I'd love to but unfortunately the 2012 MBP in this video no longer functions properly. I could perhaps compare Catalina and Monterey on my current main laptop (2015 MBP) though.
@@GameRoof1 Please do. There's quite a few people who experience this problem.I will subscribe to your channel, and tell about your video because appreciate it. My Mac Pro 2013 went from 130 w to 180 w in idle mode in Monterey compared to Catalina. My MacBook Pro 2019 cooled down after I reverted back to Catalina.
It runs about the same. I ran big sur for a bit on my 2012 but reversed back to 2012 via backup because i was having software issues with stuff i use daily.
Easy, it is the OS that allows security protection that's still being updated by Apple! Catalina as of 2022 is probably going to be retired at the EOTY, as far as Apple is concerned it has reached its EOL. I'm not creating bootloaders and learning how to run OpenCore because I'm bored, Lol. Big Sur buys me easily another 20 months or so to save to buy something newer that is natively supported no geeekiness required.
@@comradeuro4255 When I uploaded videos for the Betas it booted in 20 seconds or less, so I will definitely see if this changes when I install 11.1 when that is out of beta.
Is this the Retina or non-Retina model from 2012? I'm still using the non-Retina one. However the hardest part for me will be to download a copy of Big Sur 11.0.1 since I can't directly on the App Store.
Macbook pro late 2013 and early 2014 do have deep sleep issues when upgraded with nvme SSD. Has anyone tried to upgrade one of these macs to big sur and see if the deep sleep issues are fixed ?
@@GameRoof1 dunno, i do have like 1600 cycles but my capacity is 88%. on catalina it doesnt drain fast at all but on big sur i lose 1% every minute and 10 secs
I wanna update my macbook pro mid 2012, 8GB Ram, 250GB SSD Samsung Evo. Can you do a Logic Pro X performance test please? I use my laptop for work, but I want the "New" Music App only available in Big Sur, so I can get LossLess audio on Apple Music platform.
@@GameRoof1 if you can download at least a pirate version just to test I would be glad :). Ps. I can imagine that, the boot was so slow. With my SSD my MacBook Pro mid 2012 boots at 12-14 seconds
Hi - something happened after installing one of the Beta builds on mine I think. Mine used to boot in around 17 seconds on the very first Beta and Catalina. After installing one of the beta builds it started booting in 45 seconds on any OS.
@@GameRoof1 Mine used to take ~ 180 secs to boot with my 1TB HDD. Upgrading to an SSD was the best upgrade I ever did on this laptop. Everything is just a matter of second now. You might wanna check that A1278 drive cable. I had to replace mine twice. I'm still hesitant to move to a M1 since, after the upgrade, my current laptop is better than ever.
i really wanted to update but i'm having doubts. i wanted to update to big sur to install garageband since mojave isn't compatible to install it. i'm using macbook pro i5 mid 2012. any thoughts?
@@Nyterian nope. i stayed on mojave and i also have a garageband installed now. i might upgrade my macbook ram and memory first before i jump to big sur
The laptop in this video was later found to have a bad RAM slot, which may have affected performance. The laptop is going to be either repaired or swapped for a mid 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro, don't know which yet.
SSD, but there is some kind of bug that is delaying my boot times on both partitions at the moment. I will redo the boot times with 11.1 when it's out, with a full reinstall and reformat with 1 partition only.
@@GameRoof1 And my question would be how to go about putting BigSur on such a system? I have a late 2012 MBP and this video very much helped me decide if I'd even consider trying it.
Mojave is the BEST! Catalina was so slow that I had to do a downgrade. Is really slow that I can't work, UI glitches and more! I want Big Sur so I can get the Apple Music App
