THANK YOU for explaining this!! I'm using the basic concepts to open Google Meet links in Chrome. I haven't found a Shortcut that uses anything but the default browser, so the Applescript bit was the trick. Great tutorial!
Excellent tutorial for macOS shortcuts. I was trying to wrap my head around Shortcuts (macOS and iOS) and this gave me a good use case to try out. I imagine you could create a keyboard shortcut for the Shortcut, or perhaps have it activate automatically when URL is detected in the clipboard (say "" would trigger it). In your case, you use an extension that takes care of that (I'm going to check it out) but would probably be useful to some.
"Saves you 10-15 seconds" -- unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case for me. To right-click and copy a link, switch to a browser of my choice, and paste it in, takes me about 6-8 seconds in total using the keyboard shortcut for the paste. Your method would also take about that time, give or take about 2 seconds. I'm not even sure if the number of clicks would go down (of course I'd hit enter at the end instead of clicking the button, but we all know that). But the video was well done and a nice glimpse at the shortcuts app; something to look forward to when I think that Monterey is bug-free enough to upgrade from Big Sur. It would be awesome to have a way to add "open in ..." choices to the menu that you get when you right-click a url... maybe a service could do something similar?
Almost what I want to achieve... what I want to do however is open all links from RU-vid in Brave without a hiccup. So if a Mail message has a link to a RU-vid URL, if I click it I want it to open in Brave, while if there is a link to an Apple URL, it will open in Safari by default. So make a systemwide change that says anything RU-vid opens in Brave, and anything else opens in my default browser. Thoughts? *I should note that this step does help some, and does things faster. I would just like to go even further. ;)
Fantastic tutorial. Clear and concise... you're a good teacher. If you have any hints for how to save all window positions under different profiles/shortcuts that would be awesome. I've half figured it out but it's not perfect. My idea is if I'm in "work mode", it will quit apps, and launch certain apps & windows and place them across a multi monitor setup. Then i might switch to "play mode", or "admin mode". You get it. Anyway your tutorial is helping me add some more actions at the end where certain url's open in the correct browsers. I'm rambling now... but if you have your own solution to how you manage layouts in a multi-monitor setup I'd love to hear it.
@@inorita1999 Yes somewhat. I use Rectangle and setup some saved arrangements. You can then get Applescript to trigger Rectangles presets (not by mimicking a hot-key press, but you can actually trigger them directly as Rectangle is open to this). The problem is if you use multiple spaces.... the only way to automate that is to setup a script where you mimic a fake hot-key press to change the space, then launch/arrange windows for that space, then change to another space.... rinse and repeat. Lots of timers and waiting for apps to launch. I actually managed it in Applescript but It's a bit too messy for my liking.
