In this week's video I show some techniques for more advanced lighting and focus stacking for macro photos you can try out at home. Using multiple lights and bouncing light as I do here is something I use more for product photography (like the ring I shoot today) but the same principles can apply to macro photography when you're out and about or taking macro photographs at home.
I show how I balance multiple lights, how I combine exposures and how I focus stack my shot in Lightroom and Photoshop.
The ring I shot was a recent purchase I made from Flinn & Steel in Sheffield: www.flinnandsteel.co.uk/ -- absolutely no affiliation or partnership here, I just they're excellent rings and I'm really pleased with my new one.

This was such a great learning video. Thank you. I saved this one. I learn so much watching the videos where you show us how you use Photoshop. I truly had no idea how much the program is capable of doing. It seems every video is an “ah-HA” moment. Another great macro lesson. 🙂

I like the combination of showing techniques and showing what you "value" in a photo. And since I do mostly nature photography, I really liked the concept of using indoor shots as rehearsals for field work. Thanks so much!

Quality tutorial, Andrew - concept to final edits.👍 Will adapt these techniques, for sure. Vid sub-title: “Sir Andrew, Lord of the Ring”. Slate reminds of Rock of Gibraltar. How long did it take you (iterations) to settle on a final composition? That phase could be the most challenging, IMO. (Isn’t it strange how moms know just the right time to call?😁) Cheers!
@AndrewLanxonPhotography
@AndrewLanxonPhotography 2 года назад
Thanks Paul! Not a huge time spent in setting up the composition as I had the idea pretty firmly in my head beforehand and it's a relatively simple shot. I did a couple of practice runs to make sure it actually looked like I wanted so I suppose I maybe spent a few hours on it before I started filming. Some shots can take way longer though!

Hey Andrew, i had a question hoping you can help. So i am new and wondering how you can see the ring and everything lit up when looking at your screen but then when you take the photo its black? I have a sony A7r3 and pretty much what i see on screen is what I get when i snap the picture

Nice video! Hey Andrew, can you please recommend a lens for me? I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel T7 with a kit lens and don't have enough working distance to get up close to my artwork. Imagine taking a photo of a flat circuit board full of details and pushing the minimum focus distance of 10". I can't get in close enough to capture a full frame photo without cropping the image and then I lose my pixels. I need to get "big ass prints" made up from my images. Can you or anyone out there assist please? I don't want to buy another camera but I will spend the money for another lens. Thank you.

I so wish I had time to spend more time on here with you excellent tutorial on micro photography I don’t really do much flash photography something I should try and get into like everything else is having a time thank you for sharing this excellent tutorial Andrew all the best from Andy

Thanks Andy, flash photography can seem like a big learning curve, but once you get into it you'll find you're able to create some really interesting shots quite quickly and it becomes really fun in trying new techniques. Good luck!

My favorite toys as a kid were those tiny race cars with fine details you had to get up close to see. They were called Macromachines, wait no they weren't called Macromachines, they were called MICROMACHINES.
