Happy to see I'm not the only one that likes to spend time in the garden. I too love to experiment with what happens to an image with the lens wide open. I have used an HSS lamp to capture the fall colors in the wind of our maple tree leaves. I thought they would look fake, but I was able to produce images that were accurate and sharp!
Thanks Destre, you must have a great garden! I was actually in a nearby park as I unfortunately don't have a garden to photograph in! I bet maple trees offer some great photography opportunities!
Great video. Spot on and simple.I usually turn the focus ring little by little, take a photo after every turn to achieve focus on all the flower (in this case). Thanks.

Nice work and thanks for the tips. I just started to be really interested in Macro photography and I will try it out some more with different gear and lenses as soon as I got time. I ordered a macro slide today and some screw on lenses yesterday. Looking forward for them to arrive 😀👍 (and while waiting, then scan youtube for videos like this) 🙏
Nice work and explanation for people just getting into wild macro. Unfortunately for me, being an old git with dodgy knees, I have to look for subjects at chest or eye level.
You came away with some nice photos. The flash lighting looked a little cold ro something in a couple of photos compared to the natural light. Maybe just not as bright. or maybe a warming gel. One thing I wish flash companies would do is add an attachment where you could cut a gel to size & slip into a slot. I'll probably purchase some plastic & fabricate one someday.
What mini tripod are you using? I’d like to get one just like the one you have in this video. Also would love to know about your filtered flashlight. Great video and very helpful indeed! Thanks!

Thanks Angela! The base is just a cheap generic mobile one that came with a rubbish head that I swapped out for a much more sturdy Gitzo one. I normally use it for video but it's a handy size to just chuck in a bag.
Lovely work! Thank you for sharing. I’ve been looking for that Magmod flash diffuser, but it seems that here in US they’re discontinued. The only way to get it is with the $200 professional package. I really want to be able to diffused the light of my flash and I wanted to ask if any small diffuser would work as beautiful? I have seen that there are $14 little soft boxes on Amazon? Thoughts & opinions? Thank you!
Hi Elizabeth, that's a shame about magmod, keep your eye out and if you can get the sphere then great. But for macro you don't need it really and the small soft boxes you've seen will do the job well. I use similar ones sometimes and the quality of light is just as good. And they're a lot cheaper than magmod!
What you need when you're shooting low to the ground like that, my good man, is a Platypod! Have you seen them? And by the way, it just goes to show that photography is all a matter of personal taste, because for me personally I prefer the shot of the Snowdrops at f.8 rather that f2.8! 😂
I've seen them and I'm sure I'd get decent use from them sometimes. That said when you need to get really low you just need to get the camera on the ground! And that's interesting to know you prefer the other shot! I guess that's why I like showing both images, so people can make up their own mind. What do you think about flash versus natural light in these shots?
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography I think it very much depends on the situation. Flash can be very helpful if there isn't enough natural light, but if there is, then I think natural light looks better. But only if there's enough of it in the first place, because if the image ends up too dark it can spoil it.

Thanks for watching! This particular tripod is just a cheap mobile tripod (made by SmallRig) onto which I've put a better quality Gitzo ball head. It's one of a few different tripods I use for macro but if you're only buying one tripod I would suggest getting a regular, full-size tripod, but one that allows you to invert the centre column so the camera is held 'underneath' the tripod rather than on top. This way, you can get your camera to ground level, but you still have a full size tripod for when you want to use it for other things. Hope that helps!
You can use a little tripod like that but it only works close down. What you need is a real tripod that is polivalent (not all shots are made at groud level. I have a cheap tripod that extend it's legs all the way down. That is a good starting point. But, the best combo (my future purchase) is a tripod that goes all the way down and that has an extended center colomn (like the manfrotto 190 go or 190 xpro series).
