I use a close-up filter in the field because it is much easier to switch from landscape shots to close-up without having to expose the lens-body interface to the pollen etc in the air, and I don't have to do so much juggling of objects above mud etc. I might try out the extention tubes, however, for photography in my own garden where I am usually just doing macro work. Thank you for the video.

Great video! I do amateur food photography, so the extension tubes seem like a cost effective alternative to getting a 100 mm macro lens - at least until I save up for one! Thanks!
@ilonkadaz-alwaysandforever9114
I bought a set of extension tubes, and I'm amazed at the extra magnification I'm given when using my 28-80mm Nikor lens. Attached to the camera, the aperture is controlled via the camera's electronics. When using the extension tubes, I can adjust the aperture manually, so I can experiment with very small aperture settings. I've ordered a second set of tubes - that will be a whole lot of fun! Also, I bought a reversing ring. When combined with the extension tubes ,it does give me loads more magnification. I've ordered a 0.45 x wide angle lens. I think this will get me even closer than my regular lens.

The 10cm extension tube works well with the 50mm lens to give 2X magnification, however if you use it with the 100mm macro you will get 1X magnification. If you want lots of magnification from a tube use a shorter focal distance lens. Magnification is ratio of back focal distance to front focal distance, ie 100/50 = 2X, 100/100 = 1X, 100/25=4X magnification etc.

Closed up filters/lens are more effective on longer lens and extension tubes are the opposite. Closed up lens, with the same diopters, will give you higher magnification for longer lens. It also appears that you were using a single glass closed up lens which is of lesser quality than a double glass one. If you are a Canon shooter, the Canon double glass closed up lens 250D (diopter of 4, optimized for shorter lens) and 500D (diopter of 2, optimzed for long lens) can provide excellent results with minimum loss of image quality. Closed up filters and extension tubes obviously cannot measure up to dedicated macro lens. However, if you use them with their strength, you can obtain the most benefits out of them. Using extension tubes with a 50 mm as shown in your video is a fair comparison and demonstrates good use of the approach. For the closed up lens, please use a high quality double glass on a long lens. A better demonstration is to make magnification constant and demonstrate using various combinations to achieve it. Use of tripod is also crucial to get consistent results and alleviate soft photos induced by hand shakiness.

I wonder how it would perform with the tube and the filter both attached to the macro lens
@mattcero1
@mattcero1 4 месяца назад
The reasons I opted for the macro tube set are for the low price as well as they were compatible with my entire lens collection. With the Macro filter you can only use them on compatible lenses as well as a reverse macro adapter.

If you're doing still macro photography, the extension tubes are simply the obvious choice. At that point, it comes down to choosing whether you want to spend $6 for a larger magnification or $500.

You can actually use a telephoto lens with the extension tube so you don't need to get super close. Problem is that you also lose a bit of magnification power.

@smashexentertainment676
@smashexentertainment676 3 года назад
You'll be focusing point blank to the subject, which is bad because you will be blocking all the light. For a really crazy magnification you need to reverse the lens.

Can you use the macro lens with extension tube AND magnification cap together, all 3? How would that look like?
@zy_cheng
@zy_cheng 9 лет назад
grautsvulst88 Microscopic? haha But sometimes if you use too many extension tubes, it can make it impossible to focus, since it could shift the focal plane to before the front element.
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer 7 лет назад
Precisely. And if you use a macro reversing ring, the shorter the focal length - the greater the magnification. So I thought that my 10-18mm wide angle zoom would be great, but no. The focus falls inside the lens over most of the zoom range.

Have a Canon 400mm f5.6 prime lens that is limited to 3.5m for focusing on close objects. Want to shoot hummingbirds on a close hanging plant that is inside the 400mm lens focusing range. Will a set of extension tubes allow me to focus closer than the 3.5m lower limit? Guessing if it works, will have to switch from AF to manual. Thanks!
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer 7 лет назад
Yes! And you may not even have to use manual focus - depending on the camera. Extension tubes loose a bit of light, but not as much as with a teleconverter. The formula is: (focal length + extension tube) x aperture divided by focal length equals the effective aperture. So if you use a full set of tubes which might be 68mm you get 468 x 5,6 / 400 = 6,6. And many modern DSLR's will autofocus at f/6.6, although you may be limited to the centre focus point, and you'll need a lot of light. With my Canon Eos 70D and a Tamron 200-400 f/5.6 it works - not fantastically well, but autofocus is possible. And the minimum distance of 2.5 m is reduced to about half. However you will not get a very great extra magnification: 68 / 400 = 0.17 so a 1 inch object without the tubes will only be magnified to 1.17 inches with the tubes. I don't know what camera you have, but for a crop sensor body I find the Canon 55-250 stm lens a much better option for shooting insects.

Would those attachments work for portrait or simply made a 50 mm lens a 200/500 mm lens? Or this only will work for macro world images?
@robkphoto5530
@robkphoto5530 4 года назад
It doesn't actually increase your focal length, it merely decreases the shortest focal distance, so no, can't be used for portrait photography. An even simpler way to put it is that it doesn't "zoom in" like a 200mm lens would, rather it allows you to put your lens closer and still focus on your subject. What you're looking for is a "teleconverter" I've created a diagram explaining how these work imgur.com/SSzuwHg

Hi. I realise it's an eight year old post, but I was recently researching close up lenses and got your video. Would you remember what kind of close up lens you used? That is by how much it magnifies? I guess it would be too much to ask about the working distance, but at least was it too close or a comfortable enough distance? Because I see the image was very well magnified compared to the image with the 50mm only. Thank you.

Can you combine all three? The macro, the extension tubes and the filter?
@robkphoto5530
@robkphoto5530 4 года назад
There is simply no point to this. These things only make it possible to move your camera very close to the subject. Combining all three would probably make your focusing distance so close that it wouldn't even reach the sensor. Nevertheless, if it worked, all you would achieve is that your lens would be literally touching your subject. I made a shitty diagram to illustrate how these work imgur.com/SSzuwHg

I am wondering what will happen if I use raynox 250 on Macro lens or extention tube over macro lens?
@porkchopsx2
@porkchopsx2 9 лет назад
Fatih Çağlayan I use raynox 250, extension tube all mounted on a 100L is macro lens. It bring the magnification towards 4:1 and shoot it handheld for nature bugs..... takes practice but is very doable
9 лет назад
porkchopsx2 I am not using extension tube but I bought raynox 250. with sigma 105 macro it is very hard to capture right now. If the bug is stabile (like a dead bug) I get a high magnification but in normal life bugs are not stabile that much :) Especially auto focus is very hard and with manuel focus it is nearly impossible with moving insects :(
@porkchopsx2
@porkchopsx2 9 лет назад
Fatih Çağlayan start with practising just with the Sigma.... Raynox takes time to get used to..... Also very important in Macro turn off the auto focus work only in manual focus..... set the lens at 1:1 for example then u move forward and backwards until u get the subject in focus. When u got all this handled then put on the raynox. Timing is very important when shooting live insects with macro even if they are moving..... and a flash mounted on a flash bracket is also very important to freeze the moment

Can you explain again how the close up filter might break the motor?
@zy_cheng
@zy_cheng 7 лет назад
It's heavy. If your lens autofocuses with a rotating front element, that means it's gonna have to rotate the filter along with it. The extra weight of the filter may then cause damage to your motor.

Now in case you are interested only in sample pictures with some brief description then you should go to Google, look up this topic and simply choose one of thousands other websites that are NOT RU-vid. I repeat: if you don't like videos, use NOT RU-vid websites. Glad I could help.

PruskiWawrzyniec the purpose of the video is to make us viewers understand its content, a certain information. i just said that i think there is too much unnessecary information in the video, which does not help underline the core aspect.
@PruskiWawrzyniec
@PruskiWawrzyniec 9 лет назад
Do you even Rift Ok and I think that most if not all the information in this video was interesting and worth watching. Furthermore I don't get how too much of content can be something to complain about. It's not like the clip was filled with 1 minute shots of blank screen and static noise. Even if you don't care about some things or you already know them that is not really a negative thing. You can always skip these parts. And lets face it: if you're watching a clip on a RU-vid it's not really like you're in a hurry over a life and death issue where every minute counts. That is all.
