In this week's macro tutorial, I show how I use close-up focusing and lighting techniques in video to shoot a product commercial for a beer. I show how I created a shot list to get my composition and lighting figured out, along with how I used focus pulling, motion sliders and other techniques to create a professional-looking advert.
I also show how I used the Laowa probe lens to get a swirling pouring shot from within a beer glass, using high frame rates in video to achieve a cinematic slow motion look.
Finally I show some quick behind the scenes of how I edited the final video in Davinci Resolve, including how I used color grading to enhance my raw footage and how I used speed ups, zooms and a punchy soundtrack to bring everything together.
I'm really pleased with my finished video and while it's far from a true commercial standard, I think it's a good example of what you can achieve at home by yourself.
I don't normally discuss video production on my channel, but I hope that my regular macro viewers find some benefit in some of my lighting and composition tips, and maybe take some inspiration for trying out macro video too.
I shot all my product footage on the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, shooting in BRaw, using Laowa Probe lens and Canon 100mm EF macro. I shot my footage directly to a Crucial X8 2tb portable SSD drive.
I lit my shots using the SmallRig RC 450B LED light, with a Zhiyun Parabolic softbox and grid.

Loved watching you display your additional photography skills. The end product gets a nod and 👍. I wouldn't mind seeing more videos like this.

These types of videos consume a lot of time. So the least I can do for you is give a thumbs up. Thanks for sharing!

"I didn't do it properly" = "I have to do that again, so I guess I have to drink all of these myself" 😂

Amazing to see how that came together. You are so talented. I’m gonna stick with my still images but if I was a younger gal, I think I would have liked to try what you showed here. Bravo!!

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I’m saturated with macro photography videos, so it was refreshing to watch you put this together. I currently use my macro photos to make videos, with music/zoom in&out/transitions, etc. After watching your process (envision, plan, execute, redo, edit), it’s given me some terrific ideas on improvement. And heck, since there’s only a few comments, I’d like to vote for a bit more video editing if you’re up to it. Thanks Andrew!

Interesting look at the other side of what you do. Mostly I have done macro stills for a dog's age - similar subjects to yours, but now I've begun to try some macro video in nature. It's so much harder than regular video, but I love it. Nothing like the great channel you have here, but I am slowly adding video here on RU-vid and a couple are macro. One was naturally lit and the other with an LED panel, the only thing that really works at this scale and isn't huge to bring into the field. I like the idea of a shot list or workbook to organize the story and make sure you get what you need for a finished project. I'm going to have to keep that in mind. Keep up the good work!

I'm pretty sure I'd had about that at this point. I tend to be more creative after a couple!
