By the way, I thoroughly recommend the "Macross 40th Anniversary Collaboration Album"(available on Apple Music at least), switched songs between Walküre and Sheryl+Ranka, a great comparing tool between Frontier's and Delta's music

it makes sense because a lot of idol anime have had huge success doing modern j pop, like love live and idol master, so doing so would be the easiest way to not go wrong

idk to me delta songs had more personality and were more memorable than anything in Frontier except Aimo not just the obious ones like Ikenai Borderline or Bokura no Senjou but also plenty of the less overused ones like NEO STREAM, Hear The Universe or obviously AXIA and Kaze wa yokoku naku fuku even surpasses songs from Macross 7 which has overall the best music imo

Also, the music generally slaps. Not as many timeless bangers as Fire Bomber but still full of solid jams. Ikenai Borderline is fantastic.

Exactly, Delta has absolutely great elements that individually work perfectly. It's the main story and its pace that bring it down... And yeah, Max was the highlight of Zettai Live, but I don't think that they could've added Basara without him outshining Walkure and Yami Q Ray hahaha. That's my headcannon for why he wasn't included hahah.

That is true. I'm still hoping that the BigWest Overlords bring both Delta movies to America so that more people can finally get into the franchise.

@@absa It's about 2 years now that HG & Japan came to an agreement about "Robotech", or better, MACROSS, but nothing happend, as far as I can see!? I know about "Robotech" on BR, but what about anything MACROSS on DVD/BR? Are there any informations about this?

@@euclid1068 That's actualy good news, thanks! 😬 I looked into it, found that "Macross Plus" will also get a re-release, including the movie-edition, but I didn't find anything about "Macross Zero", or if there will be any englisch dub. A PAL release in Europe would be kinda nice as well. 😏 About the videogame, yeah, well, no, not my cup of tea. 😅 But that's a start...

@@eldritchmorgasm4018 Nothing about Zero so far, yeah. I know Macross II has a crowd funding to see if there's enough interest to get a Western release. Those two aren't the most popular so I understand why Big West isn't rushing to release those right away.

Indeed. Only reason I was able to get through Macross 7 was because I made watching it my lockdown project during Covid. 😅

Haha yeah, it was brutal but I don't regret watching it, thanks to M7 we got the best group of the entire franchise: Fire Bomber.

Agreed, also Axia it's beautiful and painful song VF-31 are a truly beautiful Valkyrie But yeah, the plot was very flawed, the execution was lame, although they touch very deep topics, the presentation was underdeveloped and underdelivered with a very dumb Storytelling And Kawamori sense repeated himself in the next series he made, the Pandora, even more boring, more rubbish, and more boring, like really boring, it's Basará from M7, without the VF, without the songs, and with the same boring Storytelling of Delta, the dull plot, and Basará all over again... WHY!!!

@@chacaf22 the VF-31 sure an ok VF design, but I'm not okay with the Siegfried (not Kairos/plus). It's trying to be cool, iconic as the YF-19/29 but failed kinda hard and those swept wings are useless gotta say and Kairos Plus learned from Siegfried flaws. Also I've heard that VF-31 performance is inferior to a standard VF-25A messiah and required to use super packs to make it equally performed against a vanilla Messiah. (If you can clarify it too much appreciated)

@@zakhaevshub4735 you got it wrong, the Siegfried have similar regular performance to the Messiah, but it's a little cheaper, the one with overperformance in Vanilla its the Durandal

After watching the original when I was a kid, I watched both Frontier and Delta together fairly recently. Regarding the Love Triangle, I did felt things eventually began to feel annoying as the story progressed on the former. But it was different in Delta. I get when the reviewer here says the female pilot seemingly didn't had a chance. But it's not that simple here. We are not talking about two ladies showing off to the main guy. Thus I was expecting the reviewer to point out the female pilot was assigned to serve as the main guy's Pilot Instructor, when he came in. While Freya had a limited life span. That created a different kind of scenario, with variables that complicated the situation.

Individually, everything is great, it's just that the main story in and of itself is not so interesting nor moving. And truth of the matter is that Zettai Live course corrected a lot of the problems... Have you watched it already?

Exactly, the stakes didn't feel as real as in Frontier or even SDFM... but that changed a lot for the second Delta movie. Have you already watched it?

@@absa Yes of course I've already watched the Absolute Live multiple times, have to say it's helluva improvement from the TV Series and I do enjoyed it a lot. It's able to raise the stakes to the level as high as the Sayonara no Tsubasa and closer to Frontier TV Series in terms of scale (the fanservices is awesome especially the Vajra Planet). It's a good movie but Sayonara still do things better imo, especially the little details so 8/10. (Another factor make Absolute Live cool is that Max and his YF-29, Durandal, too bad Millia didn't join him tho, otherwise the Dancing Skulls can sweep the battlefield clean)

@@absa aside from Delta.... I'm a bit uncertain where Macross story will go, especially which VF replaced the good old/rusty VF-171, Nightmare Plus.

It's a little bit more deep that than but I definitely get where you're coming since from the very first episode we are showered with the magical girls. I don't know if you have any prior Macross context but, to be honest, this series works best when you more or less know about the franchise. If not, then you'll probably have a hard time to get into the series.

Yup, the episodes arrangement and storytelling are what killed Delta. I disagree with the video that the valkyries and songs are underdeveloped as with other Macross, those are never important factors anyway. We just accept VF-1 is cool. VF-171 is better than VF-19 (which itself already got the story in Plus) except against plot-armored Basara's VF-19 Kai. VF-22 somehow makes a return and Max immediately makes it the best fighter to that date despite it lost in actual military development contest in Plus. VF-25 is the new best fighter and it somehow not under NUNS (speaking of NUNS, we never told why or when UN Spacy becomes NUNS). They only crammed a split second scene of YF-25 in a screen for any "explanation". Then suddenly we got VF-27 and YF-29 out of nowhere. VF-31 and SV-262 didn't owe any explanation by Macross standard. The music also a win in my book. All of them are at least good, except for one. And they rotate the music nicely too and character songs are actually fits the story for that character, which a reason why AXIA is so popular. Delta makes Frontier songs feels like a few and always being repeated. The problem is the one worst song is the one that played repeatedly and most often and it's the Windermere attack song. The second biggest problem with Delta is they put so many unimportant tidbits to the story but those are quite significant to the whole lore. Then they just ignoring those tidbits, never mentioned again. It makes the main story sluggish, confusing, boring (as it comes from long expositions), and in the end left you getting blue balled by not clearing anything lorewise. Also, why the heck local PMC fighting NUNS official war? And the biggest problem with Delta is there's no enjoyment for Macross fan (and people in general) to watch the episodes except some few ridiculously good one. The aerial fight is the weakest point of all Macross where it just cockpit shot for the characters basically saying the same thing and then we just see light criss cross. This is unacceptable for a series known for its action plane-mecha. Like you said, there are long string of boring episodes, while frusatatingly some episodes like the ep1, ep 13, and final one are ridiculously good and very enjoyable to watch. It's like the spent whole budget for those episodes and the rest is just filler. The only saving grace for those filler episodes mostly just the songs.

I did see Zettai Live that movie attempted different approach to its story.

It's a really nice theory that would've added a little more complexity to the story... and maybe a justification to why is her singing so powerful.

@@absa there was also a potential political move: if she was a princess the NUN could try to make her a "Puppet Queen" to control Windereme, with the excuse of "peace"

Concuerdo con casi todo lo que dices excepto con lo de Zettai Live. Esa película si creo que pudo lograr algo que no se había visto antes: unir casi todos los hilos de trama de la franquicia. Si entiendo que parece que recicló todos los puntos de otras series y parece poco creativo, sin embargo eso yo lo veo como fortaleza. Habrá que estar al pendiente de que sucede ahora con la franquicia después de las revelaciones de Zettai Live.

I think that if Macross Delta had twice the run time (50 episodes instead of 25) probably everything would've come together in a much much interesting way. Too bad that they had to cram all those interesting ideas in such a short series.

I mean, I did said that I liked the show. My only gripe is that despite having great story elements in the background, the main storyline is boring.

Your loss. My recommendation is to watch the show and then Zettai Live. The first movie is an absolutely terrible rehash of the series that literally reuses footage from the series rather than being a visual update
