Yep, they dont make them like this anymore. Hand drawn is way better than the computer stuff of today. You actually saw the artist style. Today, a lot of the anime looks too similar.
same man. One of the rare anime films that just held it's own against the test of time. How I wish I could go back in time and watch its premiere in the theater.
Max was the Wedge Antilles of Macross. For a side character, he survived every crazy suicidal space battle in Macross. That ain't a easy thing to do in Anime in the 80s.
What? dude, he was actually Luke all along! Hikaru/Rick was more like Wedge because in the end the most important thing he did was save Minmay at the beginning of the series.
The Max=Wedge comparison is quite apt. Max is considered the best pilot to have ever strapped on a Valkyrie. Wedge was considered the best Rebel pilot of all time as proven by the fact that he was the ONLY pilot to boast TWO Death Star Mission kill marks on his fighter in addition to overall numbers of kills and high-risk missions flown (established in the old X-Wing novels). Also, in both cases, they are important if not best friends of the main character.
Note though that Mirya was landing hits center mass on Max before he ever hit her. 1:39 If he was a full Zentradi here, or the shots were slightly over to the side hitting the cockpit, or if they had hit critical systems, Max would be dead.
Funny you mention that, Max and Mirya actually had a knife fight in a Macross original series, after having a dogfight in space, then a street battle in their mecha AND a video game deathmatch. DYRL had co compress it all into a single, admitedly awesome, scene.
Gods fucking damn it anime back in the day was hand over fist better than what we have now. Absolutely beautiful, they could do more with far less and it is grand. I miss this so very much.
Dude they had money and its a movie, 1990 messed their animation industry up and japan has failed to train their animators to replace the old generation.
Who would have thought that from that ONE epic battle, that not just the only greatest love story in the whole of the Robotech Universe was born, but Mirya Parino (Jenius) and Max would become of the two greatest aces in Earth history. And opened the gateway to the absorption of an entire alien culture into the human culture. By the time of Hibiki and Sylvie (Macross: The Lovers about the 22nd Century) Human and Zentradi Culture is basically integrated. The Zentradi genome has widened the human genome by introducing a tougher, more durable breed for deep space exploration and colonization. Not to mention a wider variety of hair colors, eye colors, and even "mood hair" where Zentradi hair can move with the mood of the person. Also, a large number of idols seem to be of Zentradi descent (Ranka Lee/Mylene Jenius/Veffides Feeze) and a large number of Veritech Fighter Aces (Maia Jenius/Brera Sterne (part Zentradi as is Ranka his sister)/Michael Blanc (Also part Zentradi and Zolan) Klan Klang) and of course Exedore Folmo, close advisor and friend to Max Jenius.
Edit: Forgot one, Mirage Jenius from Macross Delta who while having a sort of hangup is a very good pilot, and in Macross Manga, after she was introduced to Mikumo Guynemer, Mikumo detected that Mirage has the Jenius musical talent of her aunt Mylene of Fire Bomber fame. However, due to Mirage's shyness, while she might have the talent, it remains to be seen if she would be a possible replacement for Freyja as an idol in Walkure. It would be interesting as she is not only half Zentradi, she is extremely attractive and could perhaps become a member of Walkure.
Absolutely my favorite mech fight ever. Max pulling moves in a Valkyrie that most would think are impossible. Mirya baiting and trapping. The last dance in the corridor. Just... Gives me the tingles.
Ken Cougr Those two genius pilots can make others pale in shock when it comes ta take the fight up close and personal. And when they met, both of them end up quite bruised, but not beaten.
And wow this version is so much different than the Robotech I saw from Harmoney Gold. This was made in the 80s too and I'm only seeing it now?? What's this called and where can I find the full movie?
@@billyb4790 It's from the movie, "Macross: Do You Believe In Love". It is a movie version of the second half of the Macross series. All new animation.
WHY HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS?! WHY IS IT NOT IN MY DVD COLLECTION?! I love Max and Mirya... that moment when they saw each other... beautiful and pure. Max is so cute, he just regards her with this wide-eyed amazement and she just gets all sweet and docile in response despite being a giant, killer alien. The dichotomy is epic.
did u know that in ROBOTECH Miriya was lookinh for a good pilot due to kyron experience yo a battle he had with Rick ... she was actually looking for rick (according to kyron's experience) instead she found the best ... Mac
Well rick almost lost against kyron ... but at the end they didnt finish the fight ... i would say was a tie ... but rick had a hard time ... in one opportunity miriya was reproaching kyron defeats against human coz she thought all were bad piltots ... and in that moment kyron talked about that fight with rick ... thats when she started to look for the best human pilot
1:03 Is that a firing signature? 1:04 Yes, it was. Max and Milia having a prolonged gunfight inside a dark, narrow corridor would have been awesome enough had they been on foot. Doing so while inside mecha, too close and confined for sensors but forced to rely on narrow viewscreens and "feel?" That's genuinely epic.
God, I love 80's/90's animation before they started to rely on computers for everything. It was so fluid and raw. I was 10 when Robotech was aired on American television and I absolutely loved it. One of the best animation series of all time.
Registered Murse Same here! Robotech rocked my world when I was 12. I agree about the graphics, sometimes modern shows loose that "organic" feel but I think with the right balance, it can be done right with modern tech. And of course, no amount of good animation will save bad writing. This show had excellent writing.
When Iron man And Rescue were fighting in Avengers Endgame! They reminded me of Maximillion Sterling and Miriya Porona from the Tv Series “Robotech” in Valkyrie Vertech Fighters Red and Blue! And they were fighting in Max and Miriya fighting still when fighting together! Someone at Marvel is a big Robotech and Macross fan!
I remember watching Macross as "Robotech" in kindergarten, then buying this movie on VHS heavily edited. Imagine my delight when I recognized it was a "movie" of Robotech. I love the little detail of Max looking on Hikaru's HUD to the right, since he's Skull Leader and leading the squadron, so Kakizaki would have been on his right.
At 03:43 of this video, the two combatants actually SEE each other! Max, and Mirya get a good look at one another. Mirya comes to see that her opponent who's just as good of a pilot as 'she' is, is 'roughly' the size of her INDEX FINGER!
Max: All I wanna do is see you turn into A giant woman, A giant woman! All I wanna be is someone who gets to see A giant woman. All I wanna do is help you turn into A giant woman, A giant woman!
Anine in the 80 ties were pure art. Grew up with Robotech and Macross. Loved it to this day and I'm almost 40😅 This fight was much closer than in Macross Saga. In that Max really wooped her well formed but 😁
Ben Dixon was my friend's fave character when he was a kid,.. I remember showing this when we were teenagers and he was like/.. Damn man you didn't tell me he dies like a bitch in this!!!
When I think of Macross...I think of dog fights that can make even a real ace blush. Guess what we got later down the line? Idol crap, high school buggery...and whatever the fuck Frontier is supposed to be.
I sure wish they'd get the rights sorted out so we can get more Robotech in English. I have the 7 volume release that should be released in restored blu ray.
off-topicness: in Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, character designs are like a spiritual successor of these Macross characters etc. these are: Ikoma = Maximilian Jenius Takumi = Hayao Kakizaki Ayame = Minmay Koutetsujo = SDF Macross people familiar with these kind of character-resemblance made from Macross character designer himself... which brings back the Macross-feel made the show pretty awesome. :)
Maximilian was promoted to Skull leader when Focker died and Hikaru was MIA that moment. Hikaru pilots a VF-1S at the end of the movie while Max joins the Meltrandi for Millia.
@@vgeuc69 He actually became skull leader in this movie after folkers death, remember rick and lisa where transported to earth and where gone for months prior. He was promoted to captain while rick was still Lieutenant JG.
Actually if you went back and watched the anime that was shown in Japan the same years as Macross then you would realize there were many that were great quality. They just were never shown in foreign markets.
If you watched a lot more of the anime in that era though, you'll see that... not all of them were great, and in fact many had rather piss poor art and animation throughout their rather long runtimes. The original Macross TV series in fact had so many subpar quality episodes due to production issues and lack of time (one episode was so bad it mostly consisted of keyframes resulting in it being slideshow-tier, they only fixed it in later re-airings). That's of course before the prevalence of animation shortcuts like stock footage and the like. A lot of people like to cherry pick the best animation of the era and proclaim them as the absolute pinnacle of art that was the standard for the era, and while they were indeed quite amazing and hold up well to this day, they got that acclaim because they were the best showings of art at the time, with the dregs being left behind, forgotten, and most of all not brought overseas.
This anime was way ahead of its time, just like Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Fist of the Northstar etc. There's something to be said, using hand drawn cel anime vs computer generated anime.
I kind of disagree with that analysis. Max does say that she's beautiful, but I think, given how she says it and given the fact that they demonstrate that the Meltradi speak an alien language, that she's just sounding out the word. The first moment of her learning how to verbally communicate with Max.
I still prefer the scene when they fought inside that gigantic Aircraft Carrier, when max entered in action the soundtrack alone was epic, it was also sad because roy Fokker died 😢
So back in 1988 when I first saw this (thanks to robotech, and actually importing Macross DYRL and super dimension Macross.) I really thought this or something very similar would happen. Damn hope always letting me down... Lol
Those two Max & Miria fough one against 'nother at full power while avoidin' death's door. Anyone could say the both have the luck of the irish on their side. One couldn't fight 'cause his battle unith got totaled by enemy fire and also got wounded but not ta a serious level (Miria), and the other also got his fighter jet almost trashed and maybe out of ammo(Max). Their fighter units got personalized as well. Miria preferd with red colors while Max prefered with blue colors.
