Consultant ophthalmic and retinal surgeon Tim Jackson talks in more detail about macular holes and other surgically treated macular conditions, epiretinal membrane and vitreomacular traction.
Thanks so much for this. I am monitoring an ERM. Fears of it becoming thicker or harder to remove if I don't - as some surgeons say - make me consider it. But I can see fine with both eyes open and hope my stronger eye will continue to be strong! 🙏
I am diagnosed with full thickness macular hole in left eye, and requires pars plana virectomy +internal lining membrane peel under LGV/GVP. My question is what success rate I can expect post surgery
Hi Willy, I'm sorry but you will need to speak with your ophthalmologist / surgeon to be able to find out the success rate as operations/ treatment can differ depending on the person and their individual circumstances. Thanks
Hi, if a macular hole is left untreated then you will be at risk of your vision deteriorating. We would recommend you talk with your ophthalmologist if you have any queries regarding a macular hole and the next steps you should be taking.
I have amd I’m both eyes. Also have a retina tear. I have been told that I need surgery. But I have arthritis in my spine. The post opp worries me because of the face down for 2/5 days . Help would be appreciated
Hi Jules. If you're based in the UK, I'd recommend you give our Advice and Information service a call, we will be able to go through this with you in more detail and answer your questions. Our number is 0300 3030 111. Thanks
This isn't something we are able to determine, but we would recommend you chat to your ophthalmologist about this and they should be able to help explain. Thanks
I had macular hole surgery last week. Head down is a challenge! Thanks for sharing this info. I also have a membrane on my other retina but with little distortion at this point.
Hi Jean bailey, Lora Williams here. I also had surgery to repair a retina tear/ hole last week. If you do not mind can I ask if the tear/ hole has mended, and did you have the gas bubble, head down method of healing. And how did you during waking hours keep your head down, was it with the spealised chair with hole for face or...... The hole in my retina has not closed yet and I have been keeping my head down since 26th of March, day of surgery. Have another app. for Retinal surgeon on April 4th. I guess if it has not closed by then to see what can be done if anything. Thank you. ( doctor approved)

I have been told that Jetrea is no longer being produced. I had a stage 4 macular hole with traction treated with it and it was a miracle. I now have a stage 1 hole with traction in my other eye. The are watching but warning me about surgery. Is Jetrea available. I am very upset not about surgery but post-op
Hi, unfortunately we wouldn't be able to tell you the chance of this, but if you speak with your ophthalmologist they should be able to advise. Thanks.
