Mad/manipulative scientists?? When a swamp is defined as Great Barrier Reef

If a man can become a woman, why can't a freshwater swamp transition into a coral reef - just by a scientist saying so. This is a lighthearted look at some highly dubious 'science' where supposed damage to the Great Barrier Reef requires scientists to define freshwater systems as integral parts of the GBR. If they did not do this, they would have proven, quite correctly, that farmers are not affecting the GBR at all. We also look at a genuine environmental problem - that of feral animals and noxious weeds on the land - there are no feral animals or noxious weeds on the reef.

Since they couldn't prove that the pesticides were reaching the Great Barrier Reef, it was clear that the Great Barrier Reef would need to come to the pesticides.

In regards to the weeds problem. This is also a good reason not to be putting wind turbines into Queensland's highlands. Once you break the canopy and heavy machinery moves in, so do the weeds. Many of these highland locations contain endemic plant species that could be at risk if the weeds take over.

When I first moved from Sydney to Western Queensland in 1978 - on Sydney Tv - the Midday show was at that time carrying on about the end of the Kangaroo in Australia. When I arrived out in Western Queensland; the country side was literally jumping with roo. I must also relate here, at that time, the Great Barrier Reef was also dying. Both events from my observations appear to be untruth. Although I must admit to my seditious thoughts; I think we have been sold a load of bullshit; that keeps a great number of bludgers in well paying jobs......

Thanks, Peter. Most people are ignorant of the impact of feral and invasive species, especially plants. Plants are at the foundation of the food chain, exchanging the sun's energy into higher life forms. Changing the make-up of vegetation has a huge impact on the natural balance of an ecosystem. The problem with change is that each generation looks at the wilds of our landscapes with new eyes, ignorant of the impacts of the past. An example: even the renowned George Negus was called out when he referred to a north Queensland rainforest as pristine when, in fact, it had been logged twice before. This is the problem when the population becomes urbanised they can easily see a newly installed set of traffic light but can't identify that beautiful bush flower as a weed. Without positive change, it's the same old same old apathy to the real needs of the environment. Cheers

Am I mistaken, or is "dead coral" what we in Florida (I am a retired highway engineer) call "Limerock"? Something that forms the "spine" of our peninsula and is mined extensively for aggregate for road base and making concrete. We still have the only surviving coral reefs in the Florida Keys were over forty years ago I was a young engineer working on the Keys Bridge Replacement Program. Pretty good for a kid who grew up in Tassie.

The point about feral pigs causing real measurable damage while getting next to no media, and thus political, attention is critical. It's similar to the concern for CO2 emissions. I wonder just what other genuinely environmentally damaging practices are going on under our noses while attention is focused on CO2.
@ivanf6938

Absolutely. In the overall picture of things that could bring about mans demise climate change is well down the list. After comets, war, solar storms, disease, famine, overpopulation and far more likely, pollution. Pollution is far more likely to be a real problem sooner and far more destructive than climate change. The spread of microplastics as one example is frightening.

Lantana is also an invasive here in Florida, although we have a native variety as well. Other unwelcome Australians are Melaleuca, Casuarina and Cane Toads. Floridians call Casuarina "Australian Pine" and some of them actually like them. The State, however, considers them a nuisance and has embarked on a program to eliminate them in State Parks and Forests. There are also state programs designed to limit the spread of Cane Toads.

Thanks mate but I'm afraid your humour will be wasted on the majority, who probably don't follow you anyhow. History has proven when an organization or govt dept depend on taxpayer funding to grow, naturally they will always be confronting a crisis, or anticipating a crisis to justify their needs. The housing crisis, domestic violence crisis, climate crisis, energy crisis, housing crisis etc etc etc are all examples of self interest for one or more govt departments. Hence GBRMPA ( Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) and the CSIRO and colluding to mislead the public and defraud the taxpayer by creating an environmental crisis. Naturally they need to promote their cause and spread alarm and concern so we provide the ABC to aid and abet them. Meanwhile the real issue of the rising water table, feral pigs, wild dogs and feral cats destroying our food production escalates without any mention. We've got an election in a few days but will anything change.

Don't try to explain your feral cat problem to any US Cat Lady or Cat man. I've tried and they can't get their heads around it. The destruction of fresh water coral reefs in the Dallas Fort Worth area lakes has been horrendous. We also have rainforest problems in Australia, and I think every country has a lot of these problems, we have money for that, but the real ecology is in decline. I enjoy how scientists say it was the worst bleaching in history, but no one said that corals have increased their tolerance by 1 degree Celsius since 1980. Or that zooxanthellae adapt gradually as the water warms by exposure to heat by adjusting pigmentation. Science proves resilience but we're like kids and we're afraid of bogeymen.
