27:25 Dude. My exact reaction the first time I saw this. SO much thought and creativity went into every part of this movie, and "The tell" is just one of the best instances of it. The ending, harking back to this, is IMO one of the more moving endings ever filmed.

The fireside tale part of the Trivia is always how I sort of managed the discrepancies between movies/actors/characters in my head... I always presumed that Mad Max is a post apocalyptic folk hero and only the first movie is "real" and the rest of them may be various retellings of his same story across various post apocalyptic tribes.

I also got confused by Bruce Spence acting in this movie too, and playing a similar character. But in The Road Warrior he plays "the gyro captain" and when the older feral kid narrates the future at the end of the movie he says that the gyro captain is their new leader, he himself becomes the leader when he's grown up and that they never see Max again. I also thought Blaster was played by Max Fairchild, the actor who played Benno (the big boy living at May Swaisey's place) in the first movie. I thought Benno had survived and somehow been "adopted" by Master. That's why he hesitated and didn't want to kill him in the dome. *** A FEW SMALL SPOILERS FOR FURY ROAD BELOW *** ... Re-watching this now through your reaction after watching Fury Road a couple of times, I start to see how good this one is. Sure, the Fury Road world is amazing, but it always seemed a bit wrong in any timeline for Max. The emerging civilizations seems to old and well established to have emerged within half a lifetime. In Beyond Thunderdome it feels OK that most people lived through the apocalypse. Bartertown is believable to have been built just a few years ago (and probably still being added to), but the city states with trade and diplomatic relations in Fury Road feels generations old.

Mad Max is tales of people who encounter Max. Actors can be the same but are different characters because they are fables of the encounters of Max.

When you said this was the end of Angelo Rossitto's 60 year career I wondered if he was in The Wizard of Oz back in 1939. He was a munchkin! I had no idea.

The music video of the film is the classic song "We Don't Need Another Hero" performed by Tina Turner.

Jedidiah's son isn't the Feral Kid from MM2. The Feral Kid went on to become the leader of the tribe, while Jedidiah and Son are presumably with the group in the Sydney ruins. Entirely different characters in different parts of the Mad Max universe.

You know it's a good reaction when there is crying even if the tears are 6 month old.

I like this film more and more over the years. Tina Turner's character was not even really a villain but more of a driven antagonist - as opposed to the psychos of the other films, "Raggady man..." Love her. RIP Tina.

Some suggestions, 1492: Conquest of Paradise (Ridley Scott) The Pillars of The Earth Far and Away (Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman) The Name of the Rose (Sean Connery) The Last King of Scotland (Forest Whitaker as dictator Idi Amin)

Yeah the 2nd Mad Max film is the considered the "best" one, but this one is beautiful, has a huge heart and really takes max into messiah territory. I saw this when it came out, and It always stuck with me, and i agree that last act with max sacrificing himself to give those kids a chance - essentially being the protective father that he couldnt be in the first film, and Auntie recognising at the end that Max is a decent man and lets him live. Just a great, underappreciated film. And yes, they are considered campfire stories passed down the generations, so deliberately are a bit fuzzy storywise.

I dont care whats canon and whats not . in my head its the same gyro captain and the kid he had with the girl from part 2 . Also i pretend Blaster is Benno from part 1 on the farm . lThe shock at seeing who blaster was , the guy from the day his wife and kid were killed is the only reason max would have broken the deal cause max really didnt give a F . He was in a constant state of survival . Blaster and Benno in both movies are also referred the same way . As just a baby

Yeah, I like that ideal too. The gyro captains girl probably died sometime shortly after her son's birth due to wasteland reasons. So the gyro captain left the tribe of the north to Someone unknown to the story, perhaps the old army dude. Then moved off around the same time the young feral kid reached adolescence and began his journey as the next Max by obtain enlightenment on the Fury Road. so he could presume his claim as the leader of the Great Northern Tribe.

@@spaced86out I like the feral kid theory . I haven't quite made up my mind on who the tom hardy max is in my head . I guess , waiting on the 3rd movie . fury road was part 3 . Furiosa part 2 and the next movie we will see max with the V8 interceptor the year leading to Fury road. I'll see if george miller makes any links to the original trilogy . Sée why tom hardy has flashes of a little girl calling him dad when Mel Gibson's max had a boy .

Hello from Seattle. I'm a first time view of your channel because of this film. I was 13 when it came out and when I saw it, I snatched up a copy of the soundtrack on cassette before I went home. And like yourself, this is my favorite of the original trilogy. Now this movie came out the year following Tina Turner's smash album "Private Dancer". So we got a few years of heavy rotation of her music. The part had been written by George Miller specifically for her, but didn't think she would actually play the part. Since you referenced Rufio a lot in the review, that actor Dante Basco was in a really good movie you might want to review called "But I'm A Cheerleader" from 1991. Thank you so much for a great well put together review and great editing as well. I look forward to watching more of your content, sir.

I remember when this came out in the theaters, wondering the same thing: both the gyro captain and the mechanic reprise their roles from The Road Warrior, yet they clearly don't recognize Max any more than he does them. Maybe specifically identifying them as the characters from RW somehow infringes on RW's production I.P. so they couldn't be explicit about it? Who knows.

I can't be the only one that thinks Marty would make a great MC of the thunderdome. With his posh brit accent it'd be awesome. :) 👍Marty, great reaction, loved the first jump scare you had me rolling. Nice to see you really enjoyed this one. You like post apocalyptic stuff? .... Check out "Hardware" (1990) I think you'll enjoy it.

Apart from Max, all characters are different in each film. It's really annoying that you keep thinking people are from previous films.
