I wonder if his previous owner, being elderly, was sick a lot. Very traumatic, for a sensitive birdie like Max. He's still beautiful.

If my blue macaw hears that noise, he says "ew" or "shut up"

you mentioned he came from an old man who passed away I hope max didn't have to see his owner pass like that and maybe that's why he hates that sound.

Poor sweet Maxwell. That sound to him is obviously a memory trigger! Next time, take a towel and gently place over him, wrap him and cuddle with him to calm him down. I've had to do this with my bird a couple of times, even if you have to cover his face ~ as long as he can breathe. That's what Cosmo's Doc told me. It does work. The warmth and comfort of your body and hearing your heart beat soothes them. Poor thing, he must have heard his first owner doing this. Love you Max. ♡♡♡

Oh, dear Lord!! I was watching older Max videos, and I must have missed this one. This is NOT a mad Cockatoo; this is a TERRIFIED, traumatized Cockatoo. I believe he's having a flashback PTSD panic attack moment related to his first human, and Dad Dan is getting him through it the best way he knows, by just talking him through it. The "ugh" may have come from the elderly man who was ill, and when he would be sick would say "ugh" or make a sound like that. Poor Max, and poor Dad Dan, having to go through this and knowing there's nothing he can do except just help Max work through the panic attack. God bless you, Dan, for rescuing and being there for this so very special feathered child. All my love to you and Max.

Soft music & Dad makes life and all of its anxiety provoking moments much more tolerable for Max 🧡🐥💛. Dan, thank you for sharing and being the soft, warm, genuine light of Max’s existence. I had a dog who would run and hide when anyone had the hiccups. But, Max definitely takes the cake!

I can't get a bird because of traveling but I stopped in a pet store in St Augustine last week and the owner had a cockatoo that he said had been in six different homes and was only four years old, and the asshole was still trying to sell it for $2000 instead of trying to find it a good home, made me mad.

He's rocking back and forth saying ugh... I feel sad that he's upset but it is quite funny because he's so human like!

He IS mad. He's puffed up to look big n' bad. Hissing. We had a cockatiel named Rudy who'd do that....the puffed up, rocking and hissing lol. Of course, he'd only do that when afraid, not when angry. Reminds me when we used newspaper as a liner on the bottom of his cage. There was a closeup picture of a cat's face on it. We couldn't figure out why he refused to go near the cage. We put him on the top of his cage, he'd look down rocking and hissing lol. Then we saw what he was looking at lol. The cat picture. 😼 We fixed it after a good laugh.

His sigh of awfulness sounds almost like he has that thing some of us have- if we hear someone gag, we gag too..

Hm….there are lots of wild cockatoos where I live and to me this looks like a combination of behaviours--certainly an adult male display of some kind, but, also when baby cockatoos want to be fed, they sway in exactly the same way and often for a long time making similar hoarse squalling sounds--its begging for food. and how do cockatoos feed babies--by regurgitating….so the sound/sight of throwing up may have different meaning for a cockatoo, on very deep levels, particularly as captive hatched/raised parrots are sadly so rarely left in their parents' care and instead fed by human hand, further crossing the wires between nature and nuture. In any case, its quite a sight. Love you guys! Thanks as always for sharing

I have a best friend and a brother who will run out of my bedroom if I start throwing up! They can not stand the sound, it makes them throw up too! So I can not wait to show them Mr. Max who FEELS the same way they do. Birds and animals show us everyday how they are so alike to us humans!

How do you manage being ill with him requiring so much attention and being so adverse too illness?

I think some thing has happened before and they never forget. maybe he heard someone being sick and triggereda memory!! he may have got frightened or been reprimanded by someone (not Dan obviously)

My Amazon Abby used to get upset if she heard my husband coughing loudly. Usually all I had to do is tell her "it's okay, it's all right" in a soothing voice and she'd calm down. She never swayed or puffed up, just stretched herself up tall and smoothed her feathers. When something frightens an Amazon they either puff and attack or make themselves tall and lean, to attempt to make themselves invisible I suppose. Every time I watch a Max video I realize just how very different various species of birds are from each other. One thing remains the same though, they are all amazing.

Birds are such incredible animals with how they're able to make so many, often times simply beautiful, sounds ranging from what you hear in their mating calls to imitating human speech to *pterodactyl screeching*

Poor Max. I'v never seen him like this before. I want to run and rescue him. There is so much more to animals than we realize.
