What this scene says to me is that CGI is not the problem with modern action films. Lack of realism is not the problem of modern action films. You can have as much CGI or an absence of realism as you want as long as there is some genuine cinematic artistry involved.

There's a reason this sequence won a VES award for Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature. It's just a shame it didn't win the Oscar for best VFX; I think it deserved it.

Jon Favreau, director of Iron man put it well...When CGI fails, its the fault of the director, not the VFX methodologies. Basically the user and not the tools dictate the outcome

What makes this movie so special isnt even the action. Miller takes the time to give every character a little vulnerable moment which makes you want to care for them. A lot of modern films forget that heart is important.

LOVE this movie, it was a shame it didn't win the best picture of Oscar! I watched it in a DOLBY ATMOS theater, sound was truly immersive and accurate. The picture on aluminum screen was sensational with rich color & contrast. MAD MAX + ATMOS theater was the best theater experience in my life, worth every penny!

I like how the camera never leaves the actors for more than 5-6 seconds at a time. It's important to see how the characters are reacting to all this or you stop caring about them. Special effects should always support the story, not the other way around. Most Hollywood movies have completely forgotten this and focus on the effects and the spectacle.

A spectacular death like that is the closest thing to beauty that Nux has ever seen. He's having a religious experience. He's seeing his fellow War Boys faith rewarded with a glorious death in battle instead of wasting away from leukaemia. The music reflects that because we're seeing it from his point of view, not Max or Furiosa's.

1:03 Look at how the music interlocks perfectly with the crazy tension building up to that spectacle.. All of the characters are in extreme peril and the melodyless beats chimes ominously as Max climbs desperately up from the back of the car. Then Nux, still completely engulfed in zeal, turns to the War Rig and the music kicks in as the enormous sandstorm shows its full disturbing glory. The music rises even further by an octave as Furiosa pushes the chaser vehicle to the tornado and they explode in the sky with the humans flying around, with Nux watching with such fervor and admiration for the warriors who are going to Valhalla. The scene is a culmination of the extreme tension that comes before, and symbolizes the glory, sadness, and madness that is the world and the situation that envelopes all of the cast at the moment.

This scene has a deeper meaning as well, that gets so easily overlooked with all the on-going action. Max and Nux are chained together, obviously a metaphor of their entangled fate. While Max is out there, fighting for survival in the storm on the back of the vehicle, much like he does in general from the start, Nux sits comfortably inside of the car, a symbol of how he hasn't looked at the outside world more objectively, and fights for Immortan Joe because he cannot see things out of his metal box. The roof ripping off the car and Max grabbing Nux's hand symbolizes his(Max's) influence in changing their fate, forcibly preventing Nux from dying for Immortan Joe. The rig hitting them with the split second point of view of one of the skulls on the front might be foreshadowing for Nux's death in the crash later in the movie.

There is also a lot of metaphor. The men being used as fodder while the women are held and "protected" but also used for their bodies and childbearing, pawns of ugly leadership using a suit to appear strong. Sort of a reflection / critique of gender roles.

This is a work of art. Its breathtaking and overwhelming. The emotion of everything is not lost in the beautiful chaos. Look how Nux desires and admires to to die in fire and glory. The desperation, determination, and sadness of Furiosa. ....and a Max....tied to a car...in a scene that is so epic, it makes final battles of super hero movies look boring.....and then u realize ypur just 1 3rd into the movie.

I love how as soon as Max realises what's going on with Nux he just promptly begins to break the window lol Plus he's damn lucky the roof flipped off in the wind or he and Nux would be sky-high a second later

My jaw dropped when I watched that sequence unfold on the big screen for the first time back in 2015. The mad balls on George Miller to throw you into what would be the climax of any blockbuster RIGHT IN THE VERY FIRST ACT!

I sincerely love this movie. There is NOTHING wrong with it. No pacing issues. No weird characterizations that doesn't fit the plot. Zero bad shots (unless you count looking at Immortan Joe, that sick fuck), ZERO ISSUES. It's not a superhero movie. OR a drama powerhouse. OR a genre-defining critique on society. It wasn't marketed as the end all, be all of movies. It simply showed the fuck up, cleaned house and left you wanting more. Pure. Movie.

Yesterday I finally bought the new OLED screen and Fury Road was the first film I’ve watched on it. On the 1:35 moment I literally started crying. Me, a grown ass man, who rarely gets too emotional during the movies. The combination of the score and the otherworldly visuals just knocked me out of the park. I kid you not, it was something of a religious experience. All I wanted to say is - long live the film.
