Boy this takes me back. What a great find on RU-vid. in 76 at 19 years old, I bought a 1970 Mach One 351 CV4 with an FMX auto trans and 9 inch rear end. Trashed the FMX and put in a built C6 with 3500 stall speed converter. Took the motor to the local machine shop and a copy of a Hot Rod Street build for the motor with HP output at around 425+. Cam high rise 750 cfm holly headers ported and polished the heads etc. Added 4.11 posi gears for the track, freshly updated brakes, coil over and traction bars. Wish I could have put it on a dyno but ran out of funds. Took it to Woodburn Drag Strip where the first pass was 11.60 smoking the tires most of the way. Needed slicks badly. Didn't get another pass that day as it blew the rear main seal. Common problem on this motor. Boy I loved that motor, it pulled so hard and sounded so good, pulled harder than my friends built 455 GTO or 440 GTX. Didn't lose a single street race the two years I owned it. Never got back to the track with it. Would have liked to keep it but I also met my future wife at the track and I still have her 42 years later and a 92 Fox body 5.0 that has some bolt on goodies for fun.

Actually they did not because it came too late, so it never got to see the pinnacle of what it could have been. Ford was planning the 4V version to make 500HP…. But then the gas crisis hit and the production motor ended up being crippled heavily.

Ever heard of the 318 polyshere? The Ford Cleveland engines borrowed from the 318 polysphere in that it used similar looking valve configuration and combustion chamber as well as the evenly spaced intake and exhaust ports (as opposed to the small block Chevy's siamaesed ports).

Fords just generate oil from the air when they run. It condenses on the block and drips off, protecting the engine from rust. It's magic.

I also used the Pertronix with a recurve kit to bring timing in a bit earlier. My cam is the 265DEH grind from Comp. It runs like a scalded ape. Sounds great through chambered mufflers. Here in Australia the 351C was THE engine for the ford brigade. Made famous here in Ford Australia's XY Falcon GTHO Phase 3. The hero car for the early 70's. They sell for over half a million with perfect examples going for almost One Million. Claimed output was around 380 bhp with a top speed of 140mph. The 351 was a brilliant engine, Aussie's never really took to the big blocks, perhaps because they just weren't an option for us here. A Ford American exec looking after Ford Aus (Bill Bourke) did have a big block shoe horned into an XW falcon back in the day though. It can be googled, along with the XY GTHO

In Australia, in the 70s-80s the Cleveland was Ford’s king of v8’s, ford Australia redesigned the us engine and gave it thicker cylinder walls to overcome overheating issues that plagued the USA Cleveland engine. The Cleveland powered phase 4 falcon in 1972 was to have over 400hp, but the Australian government stepped in and stopped production claiming they were too dangerous to sell to the public, 😢

What I like about NG is that there is no bullshit. He is the best for getting the best out of fairly standard muscle engines. And yes, Nick, 351s always fart around with their electrics. But a good 351 will match a good 350 Chevvy. The only problem is the weight. Aluminium heads and intake would get over 400 out of this engine.

My Torino had a 351 Windsor, which sang sweetly at 5500 RPM, and a local guy had reworked it with a police pursuit transmission. I never heard it sing until I was cruising 140 taking my mother to the hospital. After that, I knew what I had. I thought about doing a B&B, but I was afraid the added confidence would be dangerous to my health and that of my neighbors, so I didn't do it. I regret selling the car when I was broke, but the guy that got it was a street-rodder and gave me $8k. Not bad for my $3k investment. I miss it, and I still hear it singing in my dreams.

The Clevland engine was developed at the height of the muscle car era and Ford, along with GM and Chrysler, were fudging hp numbers to beat the insurance companies. The NHRA knew this and classified cars in stock and super stock according to real world hp numbers. Not to surprising that a 351C with 4V heads and a slightly bigger cam made 352 hp.

We stuffed a 4v Cleveland in a 1988 Ford Ranger back in 1990. Dropped 9” Rear End in it and had lots of fun. It had a split duration camshaft solid lifters. I didn’t know much about cars and engines but my brother in law and another friend engineered that project. I would roll around the streets of Western Kentucky and that thing just had a sound like never heard since and it was a beast. People would just gawk at it. It was more fun than I ever had in my life. I was originally going to put a 302 in it but then we thought nah let’s put a Cleveland in it. Lol.

Imagine if it had the Cleveland's relative, the 400 with 500+ HP and 500+ Ft lbs torque. It would be hard getting rear tires to last with an engine like that.

Had a new 73’ Torino fastback. Medium blue/white vinyl top. Fairly common car around town. Except this was what made mine different from all the rest of them. It has a 351C with a 4V carb. Blue Ben h seats and stuck in the middle coming out the floor was a Hurst 4 speed and two chrome exhaust tips coming out the rear. Topped off with I believe were the Firestone 500’s 15” and 15” turbo wheels all the way around. Big car.Heavy looking car. Remember being at the local restaurant with curb service and “Me and Mrs. Jones” playing on the AM radio. I wasn’t smart enough to realize what I had !!! Life goes on though !!!

NICK, Tell you a funny story. Some years after Ford intro the Cleveland 351 Ford needed more power for their station wagon line. One of their engineers came up with the idea to punch out a 351 to 400 add cleveland heads and the combo worked great! it increased the power to just where Ford needed it. SO, while DIY were scouring every wrecking yard in north america for 351 with cleveland heads, those same yards were probably full of station wagons with the 400 in them. !

@7s29, AND THE CLEVELAND STILL LIVES. THE 351 CLEVELAND TOTALLY AND SINGLE HANDEDLY CHANGED THE FACE OF PROSTOCK DRAG RACING FOREVER. THE 351 CLEVELAND DOMINATED PROSTOCK TO THE POINT WHERE THEY MADE THE FORD'S CARRY 250LBS MORE WEIGHT AND THEY STILL WON. THE NHRA THEN LET THE CHEVY'S/CHRYSLER/ETC REMOVE MORE WEIGHT AND THE FORD'S ONCE AGAIN STILL WON. THE EMINANT DOOM OF THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY WAS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER AND THE NIGHTMARE GM FEARED WOULD SOON BECOME A REALITY OF PROSTOCK BEING TOTALLY POWERED BY THE 351 CLEVELAND MOTORS. THEN IN 1983 THE NHRA (ANOTHER DIVISION OF GM) HAD THEIR HENCHMEN IN THE NHRA MANDATED THE 500ci RULE AS A PLOY TO STOP FORD FROM DOMINATING PROSTOCK ANYMORE. SO THE NHRA ALLOWS GM ALONG WITH WARREN JOHNSON TO BUILD A NEW ENGINE CALLED "THE DRCE - DRAG RACE COMPETITION ENGINE". SO GM TAKES THE OLDSMOBILE BLOCK AND STUFFS IT LIKE A THANKSGIVING DAY TURKEY WITH A CAM AND ROTATING ASSEMBLY FROM A BIG BLOCK CHEVY AND THEN WARREN JOHNSON HAS A BIG PAIR OF FORD CLEVELAND HEADS MADE FOR IT. SO SINCE 1983 TO PRESENT WHAT CHEVY HAS BEEN WINNING WITH IS A FORD CLEVELAND ENGINE. THIS IS THE REASON FORD DOESN'T GET INVOLVED IN PROSTOCK RACING. BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY FORD POWERED. AT THIS POINT BOB GLIDDEN GOES OUT AND GETS HIMSELF A BOSS 429 ENGINE AND SLAUGHTERS ALL OF THEM. EVERY YEAR AS GM/CHEVY GOT FASTER WITH THERE GENERIC FORD CLEVELAND ENGINE. BOB GLIDDEN WOULD SLIGHTLY PORT THE BOSS HEADS KEEPING HIMSELF AHEAD OF THE CHEVY'S AND THE REST OF THEM INCLUDING THE HEMI'S. IT REACHED THE POINT WHERE FORD AND BOB GLIDDEN WERE GETTING READY TO CAST A NEW FORD BOSS HEAD AND MOST LIKELY THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN NAMED "THE SUPER BOSS HEADS". AT THIS POINT THE CHEATERS THE NHRA TO PUT CHEVY AND KEEP CHEVY IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE TOLD FORD AND BOB GLIDDEN THAT THEY HAD TO MAKE A 1000 PAIRS OF THESE HEADS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC IF THEY WANTED TO RACE. THE NHRA KNEW THE BOSS MOTORS WERE MADE IN LIMITED NUMBERS AND A MARKET FOR THESE HEADS DIDN'T EXIST. OBVIOUSLY THEY KNEW FORD WASN'T GOING TO SPEND COUNTLESS MILLIONS TO PRODUCE HEADS FOR A MOTOR THAT NO LONGER EXISTED. FORD AND BOB GLIDDEN THEN TOLD THE NHRA TO GO "F" THEMSELVES. THIS IS HOW FORD'S DOMINANCE IN PROSTOCK CAME TO AN END. IN 1980 BOB GLIDDEN DID SWITCH OVER TO CHRYSLER AND WON BEATING THE FORD'S ONLY FOR ONE REASON. LIKE THE CHEVY'S THE CHRYSLERS ALSO BENEFITTED FROM THE WEIGHT BREAK OF NOT HAVING TO CARRY 250 MORE POUNDS AND ALSO THE NHRA ALLOWING THEM TO TAKE OFF EVEN MORE WEIGHT ON TOP OF THE WEIGHT FORD WAS CARRING. THE FORD CLEVELAND MOTOR WAS THE ULTIMATE IN POLY ANGLE HEAD DESIGN. IT IS SO STATE OF THE ART THAT DOEN'T GEY ANY BETTER. IT IS HARD TO IMPROVE ON IT INITIAL DESIGN. TODAY YOUR SYMMETRICAL RACE MOTORS LABEDED AS CHEVY ARE ACTUALLY FORD CLEVELAND DESIGNS. YOUR MOUNTAIN MOTORS LABELED AS CHEVY ARE FORD BOSS 429 DESIGNS. THE ADVANTAGE OF THE BOSS HAS OVER THE HEMI LIES IN ITS CRESENT SHAPE COMBUSTION CHAMBER. THE CRESENT SHAPE, ANGLES THE FLOW ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST OFF SETTING THE VALVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST SO IT IS NOT STRAIGHT. WHAT THIS DOES IS SLOW DOWN THE FUEL/AIR MIXTURE GIVING IT ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETELY BURN FOR THE MOST EFFICIENT MAXIMUM BURN FOR MAXIMUM POWER. ON THE OTHER HAND THE HEMI DESIGN BEING STRAIGHT THROUGH ACROSS, DOESN'T ALLOW THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE ENOUGH TIME TO FULLY BURN CREATING INEFFICIENCIES. THE CLEVELAND IS OF A SIMILAR DESIGN TO THE BOSS AND THE REASON THE CHEVY "DRCE" DOMINATES OVER THE HEMI FOR MANY YEARS IN PROSTOCK.

Call me old. I once built a copy of my Dad's Imperial. He wanted it stripped. After I painted the car with it's black over gold motif, we pulled out the interior. All the power options were gone. We put in a 6 point roll cage, a genuine Hurst automatic shifter with roll control. A 472ci 6 pack. Heavy duty brakes. We got the monster to turn 12s. Now, it seems a shame to do what we did to the Imp. Call me old, but I want a comfortable car. Fast and comfortable don't have to be mutual exclusive now. You rock Nick! If you really care about your engine and you use a flat tappet cam, start the engine with soft valve springs. Then switch them back. Don't take short cuts. Its hard to explain but if you are any good at being a mechanic, hang the#1 plug out on side of block well grounded put your finger near spark plug hole. Turn engine over, don't pump the gas' and notice when spark and compression happens. If you are good you know when you are close. Replace plug. Pump gas sparingly. This is simplified but if you are good, you can always start an engine quick and easy this way. I have done this hundreds of times.

NICK saw something he didn't like. It was the big BLUE OVAL on the valve cover because Nick loves NOPARS! This engine would easily make another 20HP if it was twisted to 6200rpm. Back in the day it was proven that FORD under estimated the HP on all their High Performance engines.

Delish posted "NEVER throw anything away"...I've spent several decades making Blue-Oval things REALLY LOUD, and I always had a collection of scrap distributor shafts pulled outta' the housing, with timing cog knocked off. Chuck-it-up in the ol' Craftsman 3/8", stick it back in the hole, and let 'er rip until you see the rockers gettin' "buttery". It also gives a positive confirmation that the oil pump is working, and you can trust the gauges...

@kenny baird, IN 1970 WAYNE GAPP AND JACK ROUSH CAMPAIGNED A 351 POWERED 1970 PINTO IN PROSTOCK RACING. IT DIDN'T BEAT, BUT OBLITERATED THE COMPETITON. CRY BABY GRUMPING JENKINS (THE BIG CHEATER) WHO CHEVY GUYS LOOK UP TO PROTESTED THE CAR AND THE NHRA (ANOTHER DIVISION OF GM) BANNED IT FROM RACING TO KEEP THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE AS THEY HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE THE AMA BAN OF 1957. AS WITH ALL FORD'S THAT DOMINATED RACING THROUGH THE 60'S AND 70'S BOTH IN NHRA AND NASCAR AND LEMANS EITHER BANNED THEM OR USED RULE BOOKS TO GOVERN THEM WHILE THE REST WERE IMMUNE TO THE VERY SAME RULES. IT WAS A COMMON THING TO BAN FORDS IN RACING. THE SMALL BLOCK 289ci WINDSOR WAS HIGHLEY GOVERNED BY RULE BOOKS BY THE NHRA THAT THEY LITERALLY DISAPPEARED FROM DRAG RACING. IN NASCAR THE INLINE SMALLBLOCK FORD WAS DEEMED ILLEGAL FOR USE BACK IN THE 1960'S. THE 289ci HI PO RACE MOTORS IN THE A/FX CLASS RACING IN THE MERCURY COMETS PRODUCED 450HP. ON THE SHORT RACE TRACKS IT WOULD HAVE TOTALLY DOMINATED NASCAR. SO TO LET THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN THEY BANNED THE SMALL BLOCK FORD.

In the MAD MAX movie, where MAX meets up with the guys to see the "Interceptor" for the first time, that engine was a PONTIAC block. I read it an article in HPP "High Performance Pontiac". It's been years, but it had to do with how the Aussies used to use PONTIAC blocks like LS swaps today. They didn't have a FORD 6-71 blower setup, so the "Money Shot" is a PMD mill.

It’s got a stock cam so that’s all it’s got. They really need a Intake cam and headers and it’s not hard making 100-150HP over stock. You can’t say that about most engines, to hit those numbers it required a head swap.
