Mad Science: MELTING Metal with Sunlight! King Of Random Puts The Solar Scorcher To The Test!

In this video we put the solar scorcher to the test, to see if it will melt metal. In this solar scorcher experiment, Grant Thompson takes metals to the TKOR solar scorcher. Grant wanted to test the limits of which metals he could manipulate with the TKOR solar beam and if sunlight would melt metal. What do you think will happen? The steps Grant Thompson covers for using a solar scorcher are super easy.
This TKOR solar scorcher project is also great for those wanting to know how to make other cool things: fresnel lens, solar scorcher project, giant magnifying glass, solar furnace, solar death ray, weld the sun, how to weld metal with the sun, welding with magnifying glass, random experiments, cool science projects and more! Let us know what cool and amazing magnifying experiments you create!
If you’re looking to try something new or for an activity such as: DIY solar beam, DIY solar scorcher, magnifying glass projects, cool science experiments, fun weekend project, or just a fun project with the family, watch the video to learn more.

What would happen if you added some other lenses to the solar scorcher on the "laser side" of the lens? Could you make a more focused beam? Would it be more powerful? Could it melt more things or the same things faster? Other things that you could tinker with that involve this idea: Where is the best point to place the other lenses? Would putting them on the sun side make a difference? I feel I have to say, I think that I know how this would turn out but could be REALLY fun to try and experiment with.
@MoHaGames205
@MoHaGames205 7 лет назад
Ian DuChene Nice idea
@EFG_DuCkstersLab
@EFG_DuCkstersLab 7 лет назад
Sure, but the precision may result in faster melt times. I understand the physics of it hence my statement, "I feel I have to say, I think that I know how this would turn out..." but I do also think it would still be cool to see.
@kvineet631
@kvineet631 7 лет назад
Ian DuChene nah, i don't think more lenses are gonna get it more concentrated as its already making a point. what i think would help will be multiple lenses capturing more sun, if he can place them side by side and somehow concentrate them all at it, it may work.
@keters159
@keters159 7 лет назад
But, putting multiple lenses on the sun side (not stacked but all around) would bring in more energy no? like a concentrated solar plant which uses mirrors?
@drizzitdude
@drizzitdude 7 лет назад
This part is true, for instance if he created a mini array of panels like that each one would have its own energy being absorbed and its own focal point. However keep in mind there is optimal positioning for this sort of thing, ideally it would be elevated more so more lenses could draw more sunlight from the best angle possible

No, most of the world uses Celsius, it's taught at american schools (Fahrenheit is mentioned once or twice where I went to school but nothing more and I think it's much the same in most other places) and it's what is used in science so, if anything, they could be in fahrenheit on screen or in the subtitles. Plus it gives you a taste of what it's like to constantly have to convert measurements from documentaries and informational videos. It's a thing that's a constant annoyance for anyone not living in america so if we manage to do it for pretty much everything you can probably survive it if it's just in a few videos of some channels.

Well doesn't it separate when you spin it around in one of those things? I forget their names but ya. I feel like this would create a different result because the force of the spinning is pulling the different stuff apart, but with the vacuum chamber you are straight up removing the air. I wonder if it would make the blood get thicker/thinner etc? I think it could be interesting and would love to see more likes to see it happen! Haha

Hey! I'm not sure if it's the exposure of the camera, but the beam of light at the focal point looks around 1-2 inches in diameter. You should try to take a magnifying glass from that, and try to focus the beam even more. Something even smaller and more concentrated! That would be awesome to see what you could melt with that!
@whynot5027
@whynot5027 7 лет назад
The rays can only hit on one spot all together. It is not possible to focus it even more :) Maybe direct the rays into the focuspoint with different angles, but it would not get more concertrated or even hotter
@samverleye8039

so you can't like put an extra magnifying glass in front of the focal point so the beam is more accurate?

Sam Verleye if he focal point of that big lens he is using is 1-2 inches in diameter, you should be able to use a more precise and smaller lens to focus it even more, but I'm not 100% sure. I'd love to see someone try it

So, dark colors will absorb more heat than other colors. Can you build a black container to melt the metals in? I'm sure your losing a ton of potential heat because the shiny metals are reflecting the heat. Create a black heat resistant container to hold the metal in, and heat up the container.
@trent5807
@trent5807 7 лет назад
A black, heat-resistant container would keep a lot more of the energy for itself. I think he's better off doing what he's doing.
@fact-o-logy7665
@fact-o-logy7665 7 лет назад
Andrew Evenson No. He shouldn't do it because if the container is black, then it will absorb the heat which will lead to less heat in the container. When the inner surface is shiny it reflects the heat, causing conservation of heat energy. And, Your Welcome !!!
@TheCaptainNick
@TheCaptainNick 7 лет назад
I think that you should see what the upper limit is of how hot you can get something using the sun's light. For example,you could try doing the same thing, but with mirrors pointing into the solar scorcher to have more light going into it. You could also use a black painted muffin tray to absorb more heat energy. I would like to see a sequel, because this is a very interesting episode.

The light has no temperature, heat is only produce if the light is absorbed by a non-reflective materiel and the potential momentum energy of the photon being absorbed creates heat, so the more reflective the metal is then the less it will heat up. If he used a gallium mirror which melts at a temperature of 85.58°F/29.76°C and he placed it in the light beam it would reflect most of the light and likely wouldn't melt. for the aluminum to melt you would need to reduce the reflectivity of the metal.

I might be the only glass artist to have melted borosilicate glass this way, into a small clear tear drop shaped pendant! Saw QueLabs melting lava rocks into obsidian with the Fresnel lense and thought it would possibly get hot enough to melt glass. It did!!!This was done about 2-3 years ago. I have no real documentation on it besides the pic of the pendant I posted on FB.

Oldie but a goodie. I made the solar scorcher five years ago and was able to melt pennies and put spots of "glass" in a brick. Most interesting of all was trying to melt the platter of a disassembled harddrive. It didn't even get hot! If you've never seen the platter of a harddrive, it's made of glass, aluminum or ceramic and coated with some magnetic material and coated with carbon. It's also polished and highly reflective. It didn't even get hot, and I'm wondering if it's simply reflecting the energy away - it is light, after all. I'm wondering if that's why Grant's metal isn't melting like he expects. Is the metal reflecting enough of the energy away, preventing it from getting hot enough?

Try using a graphite crucible, the reflective aluminium is reflecting a lot of the thermal energy, the dark crucible will absorb a lot of heat and also insulate the reaction so you will melt aluminium quicker.
@jacobopstad5483
@jacobopstad5483 6 лет назад
Aluminum is a thermal conductor so it will dissipate the heat. Maybe if you tried it in arc furnace brick to further concentrate the heat, it might work.

place another magnifying glass in the focal point focusing to a much smaller area, like laser beam status. then try to melt some incredibly high melting point items like inconel x.
