Lyrics:
My pain is self-chosen
At least, so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight, tied to my waist
The river of deceit pulls down, oh oh
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see
The river of deceit pulls down, yeah
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
The pain is self-chosen, yeah
Our pain is self-chosen
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down

Layne got that line from a favorite poet of his, Khalil Gibran, from a work called “The Prophet.” I want to post it here for everyone...I actually have the book -I got it as a gift from a neighbor, and later I heard on an interview with Layne that the inspiration for the song was from a poem in this book that I actually have! It’s kind of philosophical poetry. Check out the book if you want to! Have a beautiful day.🍄🌷🌹✨R.I.P. Layne

MrEnricopallazzo You’re very welcome 😉! I’m going to grab the book and post the work “On Pain,” from “The Prophet” in it’s entirely, today. I think people should be able to read the words that inspired Layne to write this song. I’ve always loved ❤️ Layne, he was an intelligent man and truly one of the greatest musicians in history. Look at the comments if you want to see it. I’ll notify the post-ers here after I am done. I wish you all the best! -Tiffany 🍀🍄🦀🌹

MrEnricopallazzo I just posted the entirety of “On Pain,” a part of the larger philosophical poetic work “The Prophet.” By Kahlil Gibran. I started reading through the book, it speaks of other parts of the book in this song and others. I hope that you will find it as interesting as Layne did. Blessings to you! ✨🌷Tiffany

I love all music, but I always prefer to listen to studio-recorded versions.. The ONE exception is with Layne Staley.. All of his performances, including MTV Unplugged, for some reason, all sound better than his studio-recorded versions.. Something beautifully magical about his voice in the raw.. So filled with emotion that you can't capture in a studio performance.

You mean you guys are going through the rattle in other words it is referred too as clucking...or plainly withdrawals ? Unfortunately for me I'm Still doing both, white & dark...I've had a clean stint not long ago for about 2 weeks I held on and then I stated to use again, which was a mistake obviously. It was meant to be only a little and now it's been a 3 week binge. So that's how I've been fighting this possessive evil thing. I've been taking now basically for 2 years with little breaks in between but for the most part it's been 2 years of addiction. I don't really smoke the white as much mainly the dark & I don't pin up I do it occasionally as I know the dangers and it's very addicting already and doing that just makes it even more harder to stop. But like I was saying I mainly smoke with the occasional dig. Anyway before the 2 year stint I was clean for 6 Months and I've been kicking myself that I started using again. But i guess i have the resources to stop as I'm only 26 nearly 27. So for about in total I've been doing smack since I was 24 so do the maths. And I'm not ready fully to quit even though I did have a 6 Months or maybe a little bit longer stint of being clean but then I fell in again. Purely from the fact that I was always craving it a lot. Then I took it as I missed it so much. And yeah now we are here. But I'm gonna try to stop as I have some subutex saved and my money is drying up and since I need to wait for my next paycheck I figured I won't have the possibility to do it since I won't have the money for it. So I'm taking advantage of the situation...

TubedFisch great recommendation, man. I’m a firm believer that Frusciante is one of the best guitarists of all time. His solo stuff is often overlooked. @@randallflagg997 Really hard to name something special. To me, all of the albums released in the the mentioned time period sound different, but great. Depends on what you're up to I guess. "The Empyrean" from 2009 has a slightly spiritual vibe, while for example "Inside of Emptiness" is defiantly more rock influenced. Then there is "Curtains", which sounds like Cat Stevens had a huge impact, but again, every record sounds different. I would recommend to check his stuff from album to album and see how you get along with each one. There is also one or two who have a slightly more electronic influence and also his first two records which he recorded when he was heavy on H and you can also hear it. They sound weird, defiantly something not everyone can listen to, but underneath there is a beautiful world to discover. Really.

"My pain is self-chosen At least I believe it to be I could either drown Or pull off my skin and swim to shore Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see" ...what powerful, profound and moving lyrics! Layne was a genius, part of that all too talented and departed class!
@user-fn6vm5tb8p
@user-fn6vm5tb8p 2 года назад
I’d love to hear how people interpret these lyrics. Pull off my skin and swim to shore is a double entendre to me. He’d adopted the identity of the drug user, it took over him like invasion of the body snatchers and he ‘wore it’. But also if he kicked drugs he’d go through the agony of withdrawals paralleled with the pain of the healing process in recovery. It would hurt like peeling off one’s skin. You have to pull off your old skin, so to speak, in the recovery process. Recovery is just as much about behaviour as it is about emotional healing. The idea of deterioration and weakness of the skin related to long term drug addiction contrasted to a beautiful strong shell, like his formerly healthy physique and angelic looks. But also the new shell being his new identity without the label of the public looking at him at just a junkie. Genius lyrics even just looking at those 2 lines. Lyrical analysis is something I love to do.

I think it’s the fact that he’s singing about his addictions and was most likely on heroin during this performance like he was during MTV unplugged. It’s eerie as he sings about the addiction that he is currently fighting, he’s not singing about something he’s overcome

According to Layne, The song, “River of Deceit,” was inspired by the following passage from the book, “The Prophet,” called “On Pain,” by Kahlil Gibran, and was originally published in 1923. Gibran was seen as a visionary and a genius who wrote several manuscripts, and the following is what inspired Layne to write this song. The rest of the book is excellent as well. Here it is, “On Pain”, from “The Prophet”: “A woman spoke, saying, “Tell us of Pain. And he said: Your Pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know Pain. And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy; And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields. And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief. Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter poison by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore, trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility; For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter himself has moistened with His own sacred tears. -“On Pain, by Kahlil Gibran, from “The Prophet”. This book has several other sub-sections on different issues, topics and situations, and it’s considered a masterpiece. It reads like a poetry book, and it’s sections are connected to one another and separated by topic in the table of contents. Gibran was a poet, philosopher and artist. Gibran, though born in Lebanon, lived in the United States for the last twenty years of his life. (1883-1931). He was also a “mystical artist,” and his drawings and paintings illustrate his books 📖, and are on exhibit at museums in the great capitals of the world, and “compared by Auguste Rodin to the work of William Blake”....”The Prophet” and his other books of poetry, illustrated with his mystical drawings, are known and loved by innumerable Americans, who find in them an expression of the deepest impulses of man’s heart and mind.” (From the back cover of “The Prophet,” 1972 reprint, New York, Published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. -original copyright 1923 by Kahlil Gibran, Renewal Copyright 1951 by Administrators C.T.A. of Kahlil Gibran Estate, and Mary Gibran, 89th printing, 1972). His writings are incredibly spiritual and deal with the trials of humanity. The rest of the book also shows that it clearly influenced Layne’s musical writing, and incorporates other lines from the song “River of Deceit,” and is not quite a hundred pages long of poetry and philosophical inspiration. I think it was a book that definitely influenced Layne’s thinking, and he discussed it and the role it played in the song “River of Deceit” in an interview. I Hope you enjoyed it! R.I.P. Layne, 🌹✨🌈🕊🦋, we will never forget you, and we love you and your contributions to the music 🎶 you helped create, music that has helped so many of us through our lives. Mad Season is just so amazing. I feel like Layne had already established himself as the strongest rock vocalist of the moment, and yet here he is so clean and tender and raw. It is an incredible contrast. And music wise when monster fuzz was the "it" guitar sound, these guys delivered the goods so well with clean guitars and really almost tribal drum sounds. And of course the message is felt by a lot of us who came of age in the 80s and 90s. We know good people lost to drugs and alcohol.

Blessings for your sobriety today. I'm 10 years clean in the spring. Came of age at the beginning of the oxycontin epidemic. Began shooting dope in 1994 at age 14. I didn't get clean until I was 34. I survived long enough to get better, watching all my friends and family perish. I was 12 the first time I heard Layne's voice, grew up to Cobain, Cornell, Vedder, Weiland, and Layne Staley. Funny how Eddie is the only one left. Durvived the oxycontin years, only to endure the heroin years, methamphetamine years, and fentanyl epidemic that has taken so many. Now I work as a mental health counselor after getting a masters degree in social work and working with other addicts these last 5 years. Layne always reminds me of how far I've came, he invokes such strong memories of my childhood, the sadness I felt after years of abuse and wanting to take my own life. This song represents a generation, it will carry on forever in the hearts of those that are still here, and as a voice for those that that are not. RIP Layne

Layne, Mike, Barrett, Saunders and the xylophone guy (who is this guy and where is he now?) feeding off of the crowd and playing off of each others energy. We live in tough times, but we also lived in or around the 1990s AD. The renaissance of music, film, art, and culture. We also had the technology to preserve many of those memories. If you remember the 90s, count your blessings. If you don't, watch as much media from that time as you can, and imagine a more carefree world.

Stephanie, I feel the SAME way. That's the 1st thing WE all knew We heard this music - this guys singing - We stop - We listen... his voice drew Us all in. All towards him. We hoped for more We searched for it & We wanted more. Who is this guy? Who is his band? We were young & we listen Closely. Those of Us that really liked Started Well We Fell Hard. We listened 2 him talk & others talk about him.. He was special. We fell HEAD over Heals for this guy. He made Us laugh over the years, he laughed with Us. He had that rare personality of a celebrity that Seems to Stay Himself. I saw many videos of him telling stories - of himself (he Cud laught at himself) He was Funny & he sounded like Noooooo other (as U Said miss Glenn) His voice was Unique THAT'S what 1st Drew So many to him then... WOW! So We got 2 know him & learned of his life = the good & the bad WE ALL WISHED WE CUD OF SAVED HIM... from himself - sadly it didn't happen. The Sadness of THIS Song with the beauty of his Voice... the Story it tells that he "wishes he CUD Escape the "lies that weighted him down" & "Cut" those "Ties" that bind - "Shed the Scales" then turn to US ALL & "Show the "beau' 'ti' ful' New Skin he has grown. That's What He Wanted.... but that River... that River of deceit he Cud NOT Escape. He Blames NO one else. He tells us plainly - loud & clear... he blames himself for IT All... He can't Stop... So "His pain was Self Chosen" and we all cried, We LOVED Him & thank the heavens... We Can Still HEAR the beautiful Words & Sounds he gave Us. WE WERE the LUCKY ONES miss Glen, to have Enjoyed him these 30 years. 😍

Yeah truly heartbreaking I remember finding out about Laynes passing on CNN there was a small bar at the bottom of the screen announcing his death and I was so mad noone really reported anything about his death. Chris hit me like a ton of bricks after seeing him when he did his solo stuff and twice with Audioslave I believed somewhat foolishly that Chris had made it and would live a wonderful existence but I never knew the pain he was in . God rest both of there souls. Music's not ever going to be the same for me again.

Lane replied " I never wanted get clean one went to make everyone happy and shut the phukk up, all I thought about whole time was wanting to get out and get high", he knew he was dying for almost year before death weighed 86 lbs liver was shot was sick everyday and miserable, had he money and resources to get clean, he chose a conscious decision daily for very long time exactly what he wanted, to get high everyday play videogames and be high as wanted every hour everyday until finally died, he was full aware, made choice was no victim, and is notuing to feel sad about except that we selfish people miss our non more music he woulda made if hadn't passed when did and checked out years before death from music, so that's the only thing to feel sad about, his life and death IS NOT, should feel happy do him that he did exactly what wanted died doing it exactly like he wanted. @@cindyfitzgerald4500 ps, as someone living with illness and pain, I respect laynes decisions even more then most. He never wanted be clean only attempted it to stop the hellish harassment of every one else, and forced sobriety was not something he could live with, I will say that when dealing with someone with REAL pain, sobriety lasting permanent sobriety ain't an option unless properly get treated and medicated for pain person is living with, and he had the money to do that however knowing what a red tape pain in ass nightmare that is, can understand why one would rather just drop cash on table and walk out with street drugs lol Cobain suffered with illness pain terrible stomach disease and self medicated for years until last year or so of life finally had his stomach disease properly diagnosed and medicated and omg It changed everything unit stress and horrific unhealthy relationship with a monster pushed him back onto drugs, but point is, people who are blessed enough to not live in real Pali (physical Pain illness or severe emotional and mental pain ) will never grasp wah its like. I DO. I have gone the harder nightmare red tape, legal route and its such a nightmare I totally understand guy like layne choosingninstead to self medicate and he had the revenue to do so, and he was very VERY sick in Pain and miserable last year (+) of his life, I remember him talking about how much pain and how sick he was and his liver had shut down and he was ever sick suffered for long time and last year of his life he went through pain and sickness others can't imagine.
