Lyrics:
Wake up young man, it's time to wake up
Your love affair has got to go, for ten long years
For ten long years, the leaves to rake up
Slow suicide's no way to go, oh
Blue clouded gray, you're not a crack up
Dizzy and weakened by the haze
Movin' onward
So an infection not a phase, yeah-oh
The cracks and lines, from where you gave up
They make an easy man to read, oh-oh oh-oh
For all the times you let them bleed you
For a little peace from God you plead, and beg
For a little peace from God you plead
Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-oh
Wake up young man
Wake up, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up
Oh-yeah

@sha broussard regardless of that... Do you hear what so called music sounds like today?! He COULD actually sing!! Same with Chris, Scott, Andy.. okay Eddie is still alive.. but even Jerry is very underrated. He writes and sings in addition to the playing guitar. Not this fake whisper, fake beat stuff all computerized today.

For me, this was Layne's last song that he gave in his full spirit. While I love the _Tripod_ album, it is only dark. Layne could be dark, but he was fundamentally bright. This song captures the darkness, but more importantly the brightness. He lost his battle one day, but more importantly, he won many of his battles. We all lose that battle one day. But if you are reading this, you have won a battle to get here.

Eddie Vedder once was Quoted ( in the Pearl Jam video “ 20” ) that Mike can reach down inside himself & just play something totally outrageous, and his solo here is proof of that. Layne’s vocals and Mike’s playing , along with all the other members this performance was the stuff of legends . How lucky were those who witnessed this live ……. God Bless those who are no longer with us for one reason or another …. Life is short , and moments like these are fleeting , so enjoy everything and everyone whenever you can …. 🤞

Sometimes I have a hard time expressing to people that music to me, is art. And should evoke some kind of feeling much like good art should. I know pop music has its place as a filler, and some pop songs have stood the test of time, but raw emotion and lump in throat goodness, there’s no substitute for. There wasn’t anything that they didn’t pour out on that stage that night. Sometimes art is just art for art’s sake, and this was brilliant.

Man I am sorry to hear about your son, but you are right about this. Some of us addicts beg for a way out only to find out the only way is suicide. Driven by the drugs or not wanting to go thru the penal system again our contemplations become attempts and after a while we finally do something right to us and thats to end the pain and agony we put our loved ones thru with our addictions. And the music is our way to cope on our way out..

💔😥 I AM outraged... and I'm so, so sorry. I've made it my life's mission to help destigmatize addiction... to not only make access to assistance easier for those seeking and in need... but to humanize those who aren't. No one chooses to be an addict. Some can beat it. Some can't. All deserve respect and love. 🙏

As a recovering addict of 7 years without victimizing another person, I can definitely be understanding and sympathetic to the addiction as a medical problem. However, as a felon who committed FAR MORE felonies than I was ever convicted of, I can definitely tell you that people have a God Given Right to be and feel safe. I am sorry that your Son fell victim to this disease, however we have ALWAYS been on that thin line of either making the right choice, or the one that leads us to sleep. It literally IS THAT THIN OF A CHANCE. We either do one day at a time in recovery, or the dope is going to do one day at a time with our luck/freedom. I feel so sorry for the pain I have caused to people that don’t deserve it. Sometimes, after all this time, I wish that the Lord had taken me and THAT is part of the Process....it don’t end until I end.

My God, what a band. Talk about a super group. Could Layne sing a wrong note?! The older I get, the more I realize how important he is. In my opinion, the most original of all the Seattle singers. And that rhythm section is as good as you get, and THEN Mike Mccready's guitar?!?!! Super group indeed. I only wish I had more than one album to wear out.

There was a second with 16-17 tracks but they could never get Layne or Mark to come to the studio to lay down vocals. I think they were trying to make that work pretty much up until Baker died.

@@erinnothingtoseehere4992 I can only imagine what it would have sounded like. For them to come up with these tunes in such a short period of time is a testament to their uncanny chemistry. It is like AIC, after listening to how much they grew, I often wonder where they would have gone after the AIC AIC record. Both of Layne's bands were seriously peaking. One of the great tragedies in Rock music that Layne couldn't beat it. His talent and potential were truly awesome. Cheers!!!

Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

Sing? Who sings to hard and heavy music?? You gotta grind and growl and sound like the cookie monster! Lol anyway that all changed when Alice in chains came to Philly for a clash of the Titans tour...but 2 days prior to the show AIC came to town and booked a practice session at the Opera House in Philly...well my death metal band INSATANITY was rehearsing when in between a song I heard man in a box ..I seen it on MTV and that was the only song I liked by them(at the time) I was into dark shit so the video what's the dude's eyes sewn shut kind of appealed to me....I thought someone had a radio on...then out of nowhere the song stopped and I heard someone yell "what the fuck man on my pants!" Well at the time I had no idea what was going on but I found out later that AIC roadie spilled a beer on Layne .....he wasn't mad just yelling at him....so Man in the box started up again and I'm like who the fuck is covering that song already...and it was good...damn good...I left my room and went to the room next to me (back then bands watched over bands jam,and everyone was in everyone's room,it was a party and a musical family) and low and behold Layne Staley was the first guy I seen,then Jerry Mike and Sean.....they finished the song and I was like holy fuckin shit...to hear laynes power in your face through the massive pa system in a room no bigger than 20x20 was crazy.....anyway I congratulated them on how great it sounded...and we shot the shit for a few before I went back to my room...I told the guys that Alice in chains is in the next room....they didn't care they weren't fans of them....so we started one of our songs and our stuff was very moshy...got you into kicking walls and shit..lol in the middle of the song Layne comes in our room headbanging and standing off to the side....then Jerry came in..and the other guys....so basically we were giving AIC a death metal show..lol....now even though my band wasn't fans of theirs they were still kinda starstruck...we were underground and chains were mainstream (now)....my singer gave Layne the mic in the middle of our song....and he belted out some crazy shit that I wish I recorded it...it was something that noone to this day came up with...death metal music with Layne Staley singing...we were in awe...we were having so much fun...after the song we all introduced ourselves to each other...and the rest was history...we wind up going to their show a couple nights later and we got backstage...we hung out with anthrax.van halen.megadeth...it was pretty cool...to this day I'm still friends with Jerry..We get together every few years...when Layne died it was a horrible thing... I met Chris Cornell from those guys a few years later..he was a cool dude...I'm grateful to have known them...and I became a major fan of Alice in chains after that night

I respectfully disagree my friend one can use that excuse but Layne had been a junkie for many many years and was dying a slow horrible death... the death of his ex-girlfriend had little to do with him dying as a junkie... I'm a 52 year old recovering junkie myself and I was listening to Alice in Chains when they hit the scene... Layne chose to die alone and that's the way that he died
@LoneWolf-90s
@LoneWolf-90s 2 года назад
I actually agree with you. So many people keep saying that Layne died because of Demri's death, but I totally disagree. She was his ex-girlfriend, and they were not even together when Demri died, and they broke up because Layne was cheating on her (I read that somewhere). So like you said, poor, beautiful Layne died because of drugs and because he could not overcome his drug addiction and depression. Demri had nothing to do with his death. I am sure Layne got upset when she died, but that did not kill Layne. Be safe and healthy, my friend. I am happy you are doing better now.

@@wesleybullock814 sad but true. I think many would like to romanticize such things but it's just not that. As you said it's a slow and horrible way to go. That being said, he must have thought leaving would be better than staying. That's what bums ME out the most personally.
@sasha219
@sasha219 2 года назад
You were blessed to have seen him. I agree that the death of Demri really took away his will to live for a time. I do think he wanted to move on but as any addict knows any person will always take the 2nd position behind the drug or addiction itself. Not only that but not too many women were beating down his door after he let himself go and lost all his teeth and everything. I think he couldn't really move on because of the shame and self loathing that come along when the drugs take over

That is what i call a strong willpower. Good for you man. I'm happy for you even though i don't know you. Layne's whole life has been a lesson for me since the time i started researching it. I felt really sorry for him and also felt terrified of drugs. As a 17 year old I was thinking that it wouldn't be a problem if i would do drugs occasionaly in the future. But Layne's life thought me a lesson. Now i realise i was so stupid to even think about it. Keep going for yourself and for the ones that loves you. It's worth keep going and you know it. Have a nice day/evening. Love from Turkey.

I think this was one of Laynes very best performances. I do realize that he wasn't physically well at this point, and lacked some of the energy put forth in his earlier years... but his voice was on point and what he lacked in energy he more than made up for in raw passion... his every pain transformed into organic, raw art. I feel somewhat guilty as a consumer of said art... knowing the pain that went into creating it, tbh, although I do believe that Layne would want us to have his art as both his legacy and a stark message to everyone who listens. RIP Layne... NEVER forgotten... LOVED forever.🙏❤❤❤

I love Alice in Chains so much but man I think the Mad Season album is my favorite thing Layne's been apart of. I really like the blues and jazz influence on it. It showed how versatile Layne was as a vocalist. I heard Layne say in an interview that the Mad Season album was the album he was most proud of and he very well should be. It's a classic.
