The show has since been praised, as well as considered a head of it's time, for how it managed to portray a variety of African cultures in a respectful and beautiful light with it's characters and episodes centering around those cultures, while still being able to deliver on the laughs.

The first season starts off with the main 4 working at a Zoo tending to their respective animals. Some episodes deal with Marty wanting to do more than just being a zookeeper while Alex, content with his job stays. meanwhile a side plot throughout the episodes happen where Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico investigating strange occurrences around the Zoo, eventually during the mid season finale, the Zoo is closed down "permanently" and the main 4 have to find a new job where they find a Hotel called The Madagascar and get hired by the Hotel owner Julien, meeting the manager Maurice and assistant manager Mort. Then the season ends with an episode where the crew find out that the Zoo finally opened but they couldn't get their jobs back.
