Madagascar Giant Hognoses Hatching!! 

I gotta say, I'm really glad you shared the part with Spoon. It's really important to see that hatching does occasionally have its dark sides, and to know the importance of culling when nessesary. RIP Spoon, you may have only been on our planet a short while, but you helped educate a lot of people.

I've seen your other egg dissections and I've never opened my jaw in shock from seeing baby #4 move! an unfortunate but fascinating turn of events. happy for the other 3 babies!

I really appreciate you guys leaving in the losses and showing the reality of breeding reptiles/just animals in general. Its educational and reminds people that deformaties are just a natural part of life that sometimes unfortunately happen. Some you can live with, some you can't and it's important to remember that you can try your best and even do everything right but unfortunate situations such as the spoon baby will still happen beyond anyone's control.

Dear Emily, thank you for the how to free a snake from a glue trap vid, it's going to come in handy right away. Today at work, a co-worker told my husband that she had a problem with mice and had set out traps, glue traps unfortunately, and had caught more than a mouse on one. There was also a baby snake. So armed with your video, hubby is going to bring it home after work and we're going to save it. The reason she told him about it is that a few months ago he had rescued a baby black rat snake from work and brought it home. We named him Sam and he is so calm and easy going and he eats frozen thawed mice like he came up with the idea. I did check and it is legal to keep native rat snakes here, and we adore him.

So cool to see new babies!!! Spoon baby may have had a mutation in the Sox9 gene. Mutations in this gene affects the development of cartilage which can particularly affect lower jaw development, as well as genitourinary malformations. So this might explain what you saw in the spoon baby, though I don’t know if this is common in snakes

I love how casually you talked about culling, since i had to do that with one of my ducklings that had a really crossed beak and it didn't have one leg, i didn't want to cause more suffering for it, also it had a mutation that causes a beautiful lavendar color, so i think that was part of the reason it didn't develop fully. All of its siblings were a dark brown color, it was quite sad to cull it.

Also thanks for keeping the bad sides of breeding in your videos, I think it's important for people to know that culling is an unfortunate necessity sometimes for the animals best interest and I feel like it gets stigmatized sometimes by less informed animal lovers

Hi Emily and Ed! I know you probably won't see this, but a few days ago, I found a baby Yellow Bellied Racer snake in my driveway! I'm pretty sure it was male, and I know how to guess because of this channel! Thanks so much for the videos guys!! Tbh I'll probably post the video that I got off me with the snake haha

For anyone curious about how the sorts of things like the baby hog happen, here's my best (simplified) explanation. Disclaimer, my degree is in *human* cell and molecular biology. If you or someone you've loved had a difficult situation surrounding a pregnancy ending, some parts of this explanation might bring up difficult memories. When an animal is developing, we all start out as one cell, which splits into two, then four, then eight, and so on until we eventually become us! This is a big, long, complicated process. As those first view cells are figuring out what type of mature cell they'll become (There's a lot of them!), they have a bunch of genes that contain "recipes" to make proteins. There are thousands if not millions of proteins, with just as many jobs, like starting to change the type of cell. Others are like name tags that the cell wears so the cells around it know what it does and where it should go. When there's a problem with the way the cell makes the protein, or a problem with the gene's "recipe," the cell can't do whatever job that protein was supposed to help it with. And then, if the cell needs to make other cells and teach them how to do that job, it teaches them wrong. The main jobs for a cell when an animal is growing in an egg or womb are to figure out two things: What it should be, and where it should be. The proteins answer this question for a cell. If there's a problem like the one this hognose had, the cell probably said, "What should I be and where do I go?" and the protein said, "You're a head, and you go on the neck!" but the protein didn't say where on the neck, or how, so the head ended up turned to the side. Sometimes it happens another way; the cell knows it should be a brain, but wants to make sure it's in the right place. It looks at the name tag of the cell next to it and sees it's at the front of the neck where it should be, so it stays and grows. But, the other cell made its nametag wrong so it gave the wrong directions and the pre-brain cell should've gone a bit farther. And then, all the other cells just have to try and do their best with that mistake and sometimes they do OK and you get things like spina bifida (a condition where the spinal cord doesn't completely close, and can range from so mild you don't know you have it to severely disabling). Sometimes they do a lot worse and you get something like gastroschisis (kids reading this, please don't look up pictures of that without talking to your parents) where your stomach and other organs form outside of the belly.

It's a small thing, but I really appreciate the sign on the zoo enclosure explaining about cohabitation. It really shows how much they care about not giving pet owners wrong ideas and how accountable they are holding themselves.

Thanks to watching this channel, I have become more comfortable with snakes, and as of today, I have adopted my first baby snake (Palmetto Corn snake) from the breeder Freaks of Nature! Thank you for your videos! Also, the hatching videos are my ABSOLUTE favorite!!

The baby hogs are so darn cute! They're one of my favorite species of snake. Also seeing the underdeveloped baby was very interesting and I really appreciate you guys showing it! Breeding isn't always perfect, and seeing the deformities is just pretty interesting to me. I want to become a reptile breeder and I'm currently majoring in wildlife science, so seeing dissection stuff is really interesting to me!

Baby Mad Hogs! I know “giant” is in the name but they’re somehow bigger than I thought they’d be! And I notice they have yellow scales near their chins and gray/white scales the closer you get to their tails. Very cool. 😊

I am so sorry that you lost that one poor little thing. I have a question, how do you put down a baby snake just out of the egg? But the three babies you got are so beautiful. And they look so calm sitting in your hands, but then they all takeoff that was cute too.

I've always liked snakes since, many years ago, at a shopping mall pet store that would doubtless give Ed & Emily fits of apoplexy, some nice people were "demonstrating" the snakes, and I was given the opportunity to hold a large-ish constrictor snake, and I discovered the fascinating way snakes move and feel, and how pleasant their dispositions can be. One of the things these people were impressing upon the audience was that snakes were emphatically _not_ slimy. So I sorta did a double-take when Ed declared a snake slimy, of course everything is slimy upon birth whether it comes from an egg or another creature.

So one of my cats was pregnant and this is the first time it's ever happened for me. It was on the 4th of July this year that she started giving birth. It was such an event that my mom came to my room to get me and my husband and we hurried downstairs to see. He didn't stay but I was there for 5/6 births. Her last one came after midnight and I had a morning shift the next day so no choice but to go to bed. It was so wonderful to witness. Now I peek in whenever the mom is away just to see how they're doing.

Mad Hogs are such quintessential Snake and I love that for them. Like, these are pretty much the snakes I imagine when I think of Medusa or any imagery that includes an unspecified snake.

I wonder if they're so well behaved because they evolved on Madagascar. Aren't there like no predators on Madagascar? I think it's just foosas? Maybe stuff like smaller animals would eat a baby snake too, but island habitats can be a little weird Edit: I did a little research and there appears to be like 10 "big" predators on Madagascar, just not big enough to hunt a lemur. Mostly mongooses, which have a reputation for being snake eaters, so maybe it's not so much a lack of predators as it is a lack of BIG predators
