From Act 1 of Puccini's 'Madame Butterfly' we hear Pinkerton's aria "Dovunqe al mondo" followed by the Entrance of Butterfly. This scene comes from the 1995 film of the opera directed by Frederic Mitterand, with Ying Huang as Butterfly, Richard Troxell as Lieutenant Pinkerton, Richard Cowan as the American Consul at Nagazaki, and Jing Ma Fan as Goro the marriage broker.
"All over the world," sings Pinkerton, "the Yankee wanders on business and pleasure ... He does what he pleases wherever he goes, so I'm marrying in Japanese fashion for nine hundred and ninety-nine years, except that I can free myself every month." Soon Butterfly and her friends arrive to meet Pinkerton, singing of the sea, the sky and all the pretty flowers. (With all due acknowledgements to Columbia Tristar's DVD of the movie.)
